Prayers for Brexit?
LenHazell53 comments on Sep 18, 2019:
Given for the sake or argument that there is a god how can he be both a remoaner and brexshiteer, is that a perk of being a trinity? The father is in, the son is for out, and the holy ghost could not give a shit?
I recently read a summary of an interview with Richard Dawkins.

Theocracy is to my mind the worst form of government because it asserts nationalism as an act of religious fanaticism, it turns taxation in to tithing and legislation in to scripture commandment. It makes prophets of it's politicians and justifies acts of war as the works of god and turns soldier not even old enough to fully comprehend what they are doing in to martyrs. This is why separation of church and state is so vital a principle to retain at almost any cost.

Reminds me of the story of Moses coming upon the Lord sitting weeping. Moses asks god what is wrong and he tells him. "Moses I have spent years writing my commandment, and now they are finished no one wants them, the Philistines refused thou shalt not kill, the sodomites refused Thou shalt not commit adultly, the Sumerians would not take Thou shalt not steal, I don't know what I'm going to do with them." Moses ponders for a moment and then asks "Lord, how much are you charging for these things?" God shrugs and tells him "Moses they are free" "I'll take Ten" says Moses.
Probably not that uncommon, but apt.
LenHazell53 comments on Sep 15, 2019:
This word has a fascinating etymology. From the middle ages up the early years of the twentieth century quack medicine peddlers often toured town to town selling nostrums and remedies claiming them to be cure alls. Often they had traveling with them an assistant who would claim to be a beneficiary of the "Physician's" elixir who would claim that not only had the medicine cured them of pox or plague or whatever, but that it had now rendered them invulnerable to harm. To this end and by way of demonstration the man or woman would allow themselves to be bitten by a snake (a none venomous one or one with the venom sack removed) or more often than not would eat a poisonous toad (usually a frog or other none poisonous substitute that they would simply hold in there throat, hence the expression "frog in your throat" for a lost voice). These assistants would bang on relentlessly about how wonderful the medicine was and how great the "doctor" was. IN time and during prosecutions these charlatans accomplices were often referred to as "Toad eaters" or "Toad e's" for short. Soon a Toady became a slang word for a purveyor of false praise and insincere flattery. Toad itself is a corruption of the German Kröte an onomatopoeic word that mimics the croak of a toad

The classic answer to this of course is that the believer claims "Oh that is just a Satanic mockery of a genuine miracle, what happened to me was REAL" I've done cold reading of people on stage as part of an act years ago, and so when my sister in law was talking about this very subject I cold read her, she sat with her mouth open, gobsmacked, and told me I had "the gift" how could I possible know these things? Then I explained that first and foremost I knew them BECAUSE SHE WAS MY SISTER IN LAW! People who *want* to believe are so freaking gullible it is incredible.

Religion is tempting, it allows for an abnegation of thought and responsibility, it provides rules and standards without the requirement of moral consideration needing only obedience. Religion provides easy answers for everything you ever worried about without the need for education. It gives you a support network, a book of guidance, a convenient enemy to blame when things go wrong and the promise of an eternities worth of chocolate and niceness after you don't "really" die. It turns life in to a cross between reality TV and Sesame street and will kiss better every booboo (or at least tells you it will) and makes you forever a grateful child with the big sky daddy to watch over you for ever and ever. All sounds pretty tempting until they turn on you like a rabid dog for daring to to ask questions or announcing you might just be a bit different and need acceptance.

LenHazell53 comments on Sep 10, 2019:
There are two accept explanations for the Friday the 13th thing One as mentioned else where in this thread is the extirpation of the Knights Templar on Friday 13th October 1307 the other is that the last super took place on a Friday the thirteenth day of the month of Tishrei and there were thirteen people present. However others say that with Friday being named in honour of Frea, wife of Odin the only day to be named for a woman makes it an unlucky day and 13 being the first unnatural number (12 constellations of the Zodiac, twelve months in a year etc 13 breaks the rule) and for being the first two digit prime number made up of the first two prime numbers 1 &3) and for being the day half way between a new and a full moon make Friday 13th a doubly unlucky day. another possibility is that δέκατος τρίτος (13th) phonetically contains the names of Katos/Kratos the god of war and Trito/Triton the god of the sea, combining this with a day named after the goddess of of the domestic home Frea may have had early translators of the bible and theologians clutching their Rosaries and thinking the day Friday the 13th invited bad luck and warfare in the home and at sea?

HEGEMONY.
LenHazell53 comments on Sep 7, 2019:
Hegemony (pronounced HeG em Oni) is now more commonly used as a name for a particularly insidious political doctrine ascribed largely to the writings of Antonio Gramsci. Hegemony in this sense is largely credited with avoiding totalitarianism in the UK and USA. The basic theory is that revolution comes about because of wide spread discontent, but that such discontent can be bought off by small concessions in law and sociological infrastructure to the ***individuals*** making up large portions of the population without ever actually changing the larger social norms. For example make sure individual people don't go hungry, even if you are feeding them junk food and poor nutrition you will profit from the manufacture and sale to the masses of same, and from the drugs needed to combat the ill effects and everyone is content. In short don't please the masses, please the individuals who make up the masses. *"There will never be a revolution in the UK unless you put a ban on caravans and car boot sales." Victoria Wood* Small pleasures are what are important to people, the bigger picture rarely matters to the mob. Aim at satisfying wants rather than needs and individuals will oppress themselves and each other. This is first stage Hegemony in a nutshell After you Make sure people are not cold, when they are used to being not being cold they will pay a lot to be warm. and they will pay and pay and pay that is second stage hegemony. Make sure to cater to the want for leisure so it becomes an essential to individuals so they will pay for amusements that indoctrinate them in to believing they are content. Make sure they are educated but only with information that will indoctrinate them in to wanting to maintain the status quo for themselves. Educate them for a life of hardship alleviated by many pleasures that they must work for and you have a Hegemonic society made up of a Proletariat that actively wants to be oppressed so long as the cage is gilded has wi-fi and an X box hooked up to a colour TV To quote Prime minster Harold Macmillan, 1957 "You've never had it so good" because if you can convince people of that you have them for life.

The film Starring John Wayne as Genghis Khan had no end of problems from start to finnish, unfortunate a large portion of the Movie was filmed in Mexican desert previously used for atomic bomb testing, then in an attempt at continuity tons of the same radioactive sand was shipped back to Hollywood back lots for use in reshoots. As a consequence within 20 years EVERYONE involved in the film died of radiation related cancer, leukemia, or simple radiation poisoning. The victims ran in to hundreds including Wayne himself and Agnes Moorehead not to mention literally hundred of Mexican soldiers drafted in as extras and Navajo tribesmen used as Mongol extras because they "looked foreign". On top of everything else the film cost so much to make and lost so much money that it bankrupted RKO pictures and so when claims for compensation started to role in from the sick and dying there was no one to litigate against.

Is there phenomenology without a self?
LenHazell53 comments on Sep 2, 2019:
In my opinion experience requires observation and or measurement. This in turn requires sentience or a sentient being to perform the observation and or measurement. A sense of self or consciousness is a prerequisite of sentience in beings of higher intelligence therefore phenomenology requires a basic frame of reference between the observed and the observer and that in reductionist terms boils down to "I am" and "that is".

Arbitrarily deciding which is which regardless of consequence and calling it a sin in order to assert control by fear is a disgusting practice beloved only by cowards and bullies
Great video This is Questions No Atheist Can Answer – Debunked.
LenHazell53 comments on Sep 1, 2019:
The claims of a set of questions or a "fact" or opinion that no atheist can answer are invariably made to and for people who wish to believe that such "evidence" exists. They can always be debunked and more often than no laughed at, however such debunking will rarely if ever reach the ears of the theist unless of course they are silly enough to actually present such an argument to an actual atheist in possession of any IQ level higher than that of an average cucumber.
I have read a good deal of Freud's writings .

I find Freud to be to psychology what Darwin was to evolution. Their work laid the foundations upon which others built.

LenHazell53 comments on Sep 1, 2019:
All in the Family was an American remake of the British show "Till death do us Part" which continued in one form or another until the early 2000s Originally a parody of racist, sexist, hateful stereotypes working man "Alf Garnett" lived in the east end of London with his progressive adult daughter, simple loving wife and continually unemployed son in law, with whom he could never bond owing to the boy not being from London but instead being a "Scouse Git" it followed Alf through middle age, old age, retirement, bereavement and to some extent enlightenment. Writer Johnny Speight was appauled in the eighties to discover that "Alf" was being seen as a hero to the right wing racists and bigots he had originally set out to parody and set about reforming his creation The final series saw widowed Alf living alone in a flat in modern London having lost almost everything and his only "friends" being a local Indian shop keeper who hates pakistani's as much as Alf does, a retired Jewish man he knows from his days on the docs and a bullying catholic Irish neighbour woman who sees him as a source of free DIY. As these characters one by one pass away alf finds himself being cared for by his young black gay social worker Winston, who he gradually and reluctantly comes to accept is the only only person in the world who cares about his well being enough to not let him simply die or be put in an old folks home. The last episode has Alf take in Winston as a lodger along with with white partner after both their parents disown them on racist grounds. Writer Johnny Speight's death in July 1998 brought an end to any further episodes as Warren Mitchell who played Alf for over 40 years refused to countenance another writer taking over scripting duties, but instead toured for many years in Speight's own stage play "Thoughts of chairman Alf" until his own death in 2015.

In other news Cinderella never wore a glass slipper, it was either green or fur depending on which translation you go with. A piece of information of equal significance to reality.
"Rear Window" was released on this date in 1954.

A Hitchcock great all be it one based around a somewhat dubious ethical conundrum, is Jimmy Stewart's predicament a karmic result of unethical behaviour, or is he a tool of justice with the end justifying the unethical means?

Why on earth do idiot religious folk always think that if you do not believe in God you must worship the devil? Are they really that thick? It's like saying "I don't drive a car," and the immediate response being "Oh you must drive a van then" and when you say no and that you simply don't drive, they look baffled and say they don't believe you.
It’s been 14 months since my son died and the platitudes still piss me off.
LenHazell53 comments on Aug 30, 2019:
If it works for you great. My lost love ones live on in my memory and in those memories who his life touched. Personally I find the idea of an eternal after life abhorrent and that is what works for me. Take it easy, take joy in the joy your son gave and the good he did and left behind and you will be happy again.
Has anyone watched the Netflix mini series The Family based on the book by Jeff Sharlet?

Yes very disturbing series.
BOBBY-DAZZLER.
LenHazell53 comments on Aug 30, 2019:
Possibly an evolution from the 1950's expression Bobby-Socker for an attractive young woman. Bobby socks being a fashionable decorated ankle sock, marketed to young women who enjoyed up beat music and dance in the 1940's and 1950s to draw attention to ankles and calves.
