Two of the most important people in my whole life were and are Muslim, they were both fine people I was proud to call friend (and believe me I don't extend that curtesy to many people) and neither of them would have placed their religion ahead of family, friends, country or people in general. One was my best friend for much of my childhood, he married a Christian woman and allow his children to grow up and choose their own path, he was a talented musician, great businessman and simply one of the nicest people I have ever met. The other was a neighbor, mentor, friend and a second father to me. His death in 2012 broke my heart and his family are still good friends. They like many other Muslims I know and like myself were born in to their faith and take it no more seriously than I did, it is simply a part of their life, to some extent a guide line in their education and personal development. I broke away from religion and it meant nothing to them, they both had atheists and fundamentalists in their own families and it meant nothing to them unless it brought harm to them or others. Their lives are replete with good and bad as is mine, our respective holy books are cherry picked for good and the bad in them is rejected by us all as incompatible with modern life. My point being that extremism in any ideology destroys lives, moderate affiliation does less harm but leads to eventual freedom and rejection. Experience and personal choice makes for good people and a good life in spite of your accidents of birth not because of them.

We are all created equally. Agree/Disagree?

A woman who has voted in her time against a women's rights, is ardently pro-life while claiming to be on the side of female liberation. She is an obviously closeted lesbian who has throughout her career oppressed homosexuals and gay rights and fought tirelessly against marriage equality. She vehemently stands for what she calls "Traditional Values" while openly advocating prejudice, relish her own ignorance and proclaims her lack of knowledge a duty as a Christian not to expose herself to corrupting and non faith promoting lies. A practicing Roman Catholic she is biblically, theologically and historically selective in her "belief" in history, claiming a legitimate right to ignore and disparage as lies "unfortunate" historical facts. Her opinions to me, are worthless other than when stating the obvious, born of an obsolete set of values and jingoistic dubious morals long since combined to the dustbin of history. Her fame like wise is born of being "controversial" a media euphemism for overt Bigotry.

Mormon Missionaries are taught this passage, with the admonition that it means never to engage in theological conversations. The rule is that if some one says to you there is no god, that all churches are true you simply bear your testimony that the church is true, because god has told you so. A great way (supposedly) of not allowing Missionaries to hear "Anti-Mormon propaganda" ie anything not sanction by the church as faith promoting.

This reminds me of a story that did the rounds in the LDS a few years ago. President Hinkley the prophet decided to have a crack down on "modesty" and e mailed out to all bishops an order that they were to address the "sweet sisters" of the relief society and council them on their choice of tights. All sisters were hence forth to think carefully about how their choice of hosiery might reflect upon their moral character. One Bishop in Utah dutifully addressed the "Sweet Sisters" reading from the prophets e-mail and told them that on tan tights were appropriate from that point on, and that even then they must be plain. Black tights or garish colour tights were no long to be worn less the make the men notice the sisters had legs, and paterned tights were only ever worn by strumpets and women of ill repute. The relief society president, the wife of the Bishop sat quietly fuming through this crossing and uncrossing her legs, clad in black stockings with scarlet swirs up and down each leg. "So," she declared at the conclusion. "I am a 'strumpet'? My choice of clothing points to my having an imoral character does it?" The Bishop Blushed red and gibbered nonsensically as his wife stood and left the room calling back "We will discuss this at home!"
