Lucy_Fehr comments on Mar 7, 2018:
So many immediately came to mind but then I realized that losing those memories would leave gaps that may make things worse.
Lucy_Fehr replies on Mar 7, 2018:
@atheist I dont know how that work in the case of repeated traumas. I had a less than stellar childhood during a 9 year period with some really bad moments and some really good ones with most of it just being kinda sucky. Those experiences were during formative years so they made me who I am. Without those memories, much of who I am today would make no sense.

@ScienceBiker Fort Pierce, Florida. A coastal town on the Atlantic side. Many years ago it was number 1 on the list of dangerous places to live and our town leaders were notoriously corrupt. It still hasn't lived down that stigma but our taxes are lower than the towns to the north and south of us. There is a down side in that there is no mall, limited business etc but it's finally getting better which is reflected in my property value shooting up 50% in under 3 years. I bought it when it was worth a lot less :) I work 14 miles away in the next town over where my same house would cost over twice as much. Three hours away in central Florida my house would cost me 4 times as much. I know quite a few people that live here in Fort Pierce and work an hour away in West Palm Beach.

I had forgotten how angry it made me that maintenance people came and went at will along with the pest control guy. There was a high turnover of maintenance people. When my daughter first moved down here, I rented the cheapest apt I could find in what was a good neighborhood when I lived here before and she slept in the living room so her children could have the other bedrooms. We don't wear pajamas in this family and despite her car being parked in front of the apt, the bug guy knocked once and let himself in immediately. Since my daughter thought he was breaking in, she ran to the door and slammed it on him. When I complained and requested scheduling of pest control, the office suggested my daughter wear more clothing. That pos complex was still $200 more than my current house payment. I can't see me ever renting again.

My brother and I had a rough childhood when my mother married her second husband. I tried to protect him when I could but despite feeling years older, I was only 14 months older He was murdered when i was 30. He lived a criminal lifestyle and I was estranged from him at the time but I was allegedly a target because prior to the estrangement, he told me things. Eventually the shooter was captured When my kids were teens, they often befriended and brought home kids that had been kicked out for being different; for the most part they were LBTQ I want to mention that although these kids were considered behavioral problems by their schools and parents, I rarely had a problem with them. So our childhood and those kids are why I wanted to work with at risk teens but did not have the time for college When I was laid off in my early 40's I decided to give it a shot because the kids were grown for the most part. So I started college then I took a full job with my current employer with the intention of it being only a few years. Then I was diagnosed with cancer the same day my daughter found out she was pregnant with a high risk pregnancy. So now I have her, a 1 year old grandson and a 15 year old son all while knowing I will be out of work for a while. I finished with honors despite getting a D in the first class after my surgery but I couldn't go after the masters for a couple of reasons; I was burnt out and way too behind in the bills between having to pay half of my share of cost in advance for treatment and not earning income for a while. It took about 2 years to catch up my bills but by then I had a wage garnishment for the student loans. The wage garnishment cost me my home and I spent the next few years renting a room in other peoples homes. In addition, the 5 year pre-existing condition on insurance kept me at my employer By the time I hit that 5 year mark, it would have been a pay cut to enter a field I never intended to work in- I only wanted the criminal justice degree to aid me in helping my target group of at risk teens. The garnishment has been lifted but I still owe about 15k and I just can't see going back to college, increasing my debt in order to enter social service in my late 50s. I seriously doubt being able to find employment. My current job is not rewarding but it does support me and allows me to help my daughter and grandchildren upon occasion because the schedule enables me to be home before they are.

@Trajan61 So in addition to the notoriously low pay a teacher receives, they must also spend even more unpaid time learning/ practicing to shoot in order to act as bodyguards? Teachers are going to be concerned about getting those kids safely hidden, not engaging in a shootout over their heads.

Why? Because sex sells. From Hollywood blockbuster action films geared towards men with tacked on female eye candy to trashy female-centric "so called" plot driven porn novels like Fifty Shades Of Gray. So long as it puts a shit ton of money in somebody's pocket, that dynamic will never change.
