Part of the problem is equivocation. For example 99% of scientists say the sky is blue and 1% say it is not. It gets reported as "Not all scientists aggree" and someone takes that as if it is still undecided and runs with it. Then again some people are just facts averse.

I can agree to a point. If a holistic treatment can be proven by an impartial source to be more effective than pharmacuticals, then I think it should be given a fair shake. If medical marijuana was more readily available to me I would like to see how it compares to the anti-convulsants I take now.

Most people who have a gun would be shot by the time they get to use it because there is a mentality about shooting someone that if not ingrained in the shooter would delay their response long enough to become the one shot. Many who believe that just because they own a gun that they would be protected are just fooling themselves. It takes practice and a mental conditioning to shoot another .

Marine replies on Feb 21, 2018:
PhoebeCat I strongly oppose the nation building we have attempted to do in the last three wars we have engaged in. If the people cannot over throw their own government we have no business trying to do it for them. We can send them supplies and bring them here for training but our troops should not be there unless a nato nation or one in which we have had treaties like Korea and Japan as we would expect them to come to our aide. For the cost of a couple planes, tanks or ships we could provide better care for our vets. It just is not fair to ask them to give their lives for their country and then not attend to their needs. The problem is many of our politicians who send the men and women into harms way have not hadto send their children that way and many have never served themselves. It is easy to be removed from the scene when you do not have to deal with the consequences.

This premise seems very pratical however there will always be flaws in government just because we as people are not perfect. Nowthe choice becomes what flaws are we able to withstaand and run as a government. I personally maintain that government can and should operate as a combination of the the various types of governments. Why shouldn't we take the best of each form and run them together. Healthcare should be a right and run as a non profit business like Blue Cross and Blue Shield was for years. It does not mean the entire government needs to be socialist.Taxes need to be fair but based upon the ability to pay. You cannot run a government without funds and you cannot assume that one person who's luck gave them untold riches deserves it anymore than another.
I find this comforting, thought I’d share :)

I don't tolerate lateness well. I make a point of being 15 minutes early so I expect the other person to have the same respect. I will wait 30 minutes after my appointment time for a doctor but not anyone else. If it happens with a doctor and I don't get an apology/explanation, I won't be back.

The people who did not show up or were late should be told why you are not coming back. A friend who works in a doctors office informed me that a letter should be sent to the doctor because the staff does not tell the doctor about these things. The same go's for service people.

Many prior military believe that some type of mental training should be required in advanced training before combat in order to reduce battle fatigue. It has been falling on deaf ears even thought we can show the need for this training. Some expense in this area would reduce the number of battle fatigue. This would be appreciated more than big guns the military does not want!

I am a vet who had a disability in the service. In the fifty years since I served I have not used any vet service first because the facility if filthy and not staffed very well. I have visited there and the smell of urine is terrible. The next closest facility is 60 miles away. The vets in this area deserve better.

PhoebeCat comments on Feb 2, 2018:
From what I’ve seen as far as government officials are concerned, the only good veteran is a dead veteran unless there’s a photo op. We need to decrease the number of conflicts we either start or interfere with then decrease enlistment significantly.
Marine replies on Feb 3, 2018:
A standing military is a good deterent especially when Korea,China and Russia have multi millions at arms. You cannot train a military force over night thus we must have one trained at all times. Now that does not mean we need to go out and try to nation build. We have tried four times and failed on each time. I support a strong military but not $100 hammers and $150 toilet seats. This is where controled spending is necessary and it would help if the cost of a plane, tank, ship could be reduced as others seem able to do.if we do go to war the vets need to be taken care of correctly.

They do have programs if you aren't close enough to a VA or if you need az service they don't provide. However, the current politicians are trying to sneak in privatization of the VA , which would totally screw it up.
Marine replies on Feb 3, 2018:
My friend is a vet from Vietman needs mental aide and must travel 47 miles to receive it as this is the closest vet hospital. He receives no pay and has applied six times.Although married with one child he is still unable to hold a job and has our senator working on disability. It has been very painful for the family all these years.Using private hospitals and doctors would make it muich easier for those who need aide to receive it and I am sure they could work out some pay schedule if necessary. The vets really do not deserve the poor treatment they receive.
At a certain age, should people be re-tested for their ability to drive?
I_dont_know comments on Feb 2, 2018:
I will be 70yr old very soon. I agree that as we age the ability to drive a vehicle safely diminishes. The test should be more than a visual check. I know some in their 80's are just as capable as those in their 40's or 50's.
Marine replies on Feb 2, 2018:

NicThePoet comments on Feb 2, 2018:
Yessss, especially for older folks. They may feel it's discrimination but the truth is a lot changes as we age. I'd be OK with having to be tested every decade though. I think that's fair. There most certainly are younger people who could use more lessons, or shouldn't be driving.
