Hello there,

I'm your standard issue polite, liberal Kansas atheist. I'm a doting dad of two. I spend my free time making music and I'm an above average cook. You know, just like everyone else.

I'm pretty darn great at getting along with people I disagree with because I disagree with pert near everyone in every town I lived in but it would be nice to meet more people like me.

What's your dream job?
MatRA comments:
I want to make a living being creative. Preferably making music.
Recommendations for what to watch on Netflix please.

If you liked the Marvel shows give Into the Badlands a try. It has a sci-fi set up with A TON of crazy fun kung fu. Cool and silly in the right way.
I have friends and family who don't think there is a god but refuse the label of atheist because of the negative impact it will have at home and possibly at work. It's 2018 and religion is still holding onto the dark ages with fear and intimidation.
MatRA comments:
I have a few friends with similar feelings about it and I have met a few women on dating apps that had their religion listed in the vaguest possible terms but then in person after knowing I'm "safe" said they were atheist. I get it and don't exactly blame them BUT I have implored them to be more open about it. I am honest with everyone about it immediately. I think It's important to be a good example for the cause. If I'm the only atheist someone knows I want them to remember that I'm a kind, hard working, tax paying, loving parent and overall good person. The more of us around that are just normal members of society the less stigma will be attached to us.
Rachel Maddow breaks down in tears on air while reading report on ‘tender age’ shelters - The Washington Post
MatRA comments:
A friend of mine posted something today about how being angry all the time was exhausting and corrosive but allowing yourself to stop being angry feels irresponsible. Rachel Maddow is a lot smarter and well informed than I am. Imagine how angry she must be?
Do you believe in good and bad?
MatRA comments:
Something like that. I think our morals evolve over time and not always for the better but generally in ways that keep societies functioning. As far as a literal absolute eternal set of rights and wrongs? No, today's cultural taboos are tomorrow's "who gives a whoop?" Remember when it was evil to be left handed?
What are you most insecure about?
MatRA comments:
Meeting women. Until about two years ago the last time I was single was junior year of high school. I never really developed the skills to attract and talk to single people with the goal of dating them. No clue.

Oh, and Hurts Donut has the best donuts I have had in my life... and I have sampled more than my share.

Go to 1984. All you can play arcade games for a stupid low entry fee. It's been like 4 years since I was last there but my son and I got in for like $12.
How many of you find it difficult to contain "displeasure" around people who are overwhelmingly religious?
MatRA comments:
I live in Kansas. If I couldn't politely navigate overwhelmingly religious people I would lose my mind. I never hide what I believe when asked.
Do you believe it's unethical to eat meat?
MatRA comments:
I don't. I wish we treated livestock better. That's certainly a thing to fight for and strive towards but I don't think it's a reasonable goal for humans to get to a 100% plant diet.
Who Has Daddy Issues?
MatRA comments:
My dad wasn't awesome while I was growing up. He was entirely too harsh on me because he was worried I wouldn't make much of myself (and I gave him plenty of reason to worry) but he supported every weird hobby I wanted to try and flew to my aid whenever I needed him. Our relationship got a lot better when I got out of college and he could tell I was going to be ok. I also stopped resenting the way he treated me when I realized how young he was at the time. Of course he was a bad parent. He was still a kid himself. We're still not all that close because he's a humorless conservative but I love him. I've never talked to him about being an atheist. He probably couldn't get his head around that at all.
How religious were you before you became atheist?
MatRA comments:
I grew up more culturally religious than practicing religious. My parents and friends were all Christian but none of us actually went to church. When I went away to college I started paying attention to science and history classes in a way I hadn't before and met people that were PRACTICING religious. I quickly decided that the two things were incompatible.
What popular song will you never get sick of? For me, it's any song by Wham! (That's right, I said it.)
MatRA comments:
I could listen to Bohemian Rhapsody on a loop for the rest of my life.
Do you like being outside?
MatRA comments:
It's the best.... except it gets so hot here and the humidity is brutal. I can tough it out if I have a change of clothes ready.
How do you respond to "Have a blessed day"?
MatRA comments:
On the outside: "thanks, you have a good day." On the inside: "uuuugggggggggghhhhhh."
