It is a play on the school exam fiasco. Because no exams could be taken the pupils teachers have estimated what results they would get. The education authority used an algorithm to modify the results which meant many pupils got much poorer results than estimated. There was such an outcry that the original teachers estimates were reinstated, The education secretary has not yet resigned.

Not sure if he is more concerned about the bike or the jeans.

It was after the reformation that the church of Scotland sponsored parish schools and Grammar schools to educate the common people. Scotland had five universities when England only had two and had the best educated population in Europe at one time.

People can call themselves anything they want but as the word "atheist" was coined by a Christian theologian to describe non Christians long before the word "theist" was used I dislike the label. In my mind the belief in supernatural beings is illogical and irrational. particularly the Judeo Christian god who telepathically communicates with his followers. I am fortunate to live in a secular country where I have several church going religious friends who know my feelings on religion so the subject does not arise.

Leggings to a business meeting ?. Seems a rather odd dress choice. I go to a gym every week attached to the local high school and groups of young teenagers are always around. Most of the girls are wearing leggings which at a distance look as if they have had their legs and lower body painted black. How the hell do testosterone fueled teenage boys concentrate. The private school down the road has a dress code which is knee length skirts for the girls. Much more sensible in my mind.

An interesting guy. I had a look at some excerpts from his book online. The chapter in consciousness is particularly interesting. The Roman Catholic church accepts evolution as a scientific theory but consciousness is given by god. I sometimes wonder if some other animals have consciousness similar to humans. Dolphins are known to be highly intelligent and have a large vocabulary and even different sounds/names for other individuals. The ability to speak and opposable thumbs have taken us a long way. I would question his use of the word invention though. It implies intent which I am sure is not the case.

Most hate crimes are already covered and this appears to just filling in any gaps and simplifying the legislation. Apparently the bill will also remove the common law offence of blasphemy which surprises me as I thought it had long since been consigned to history. We have come a long way since the execution of Thomas Aitkenhead in 1697

Thanks for the welcome. I mostly read non fiction but I am a fan of Louis de Bernieres. I have just finished Tom Devine's "The Scottish Nation (1700=2007). I thought it would be a bit dry but it was very readable, for a Scot anyway. I think he has also written a book on the slave trade which may be worth a look.

An interesting point. I hadn't even noticed that it had gone. With the test and trace system in total disarray anyway it couldn't have been very accurate. I suppose it would be possible to calculate it on a local basis. I live in Highland region which has a population of just over 300,000 and has had 376 positive test recorded and only one in the past week it must be very low. Of course holiday makers are now flooding north in their campervans and to occupy the holiday homes and lets so it could rise.
