Moravian replies on Nov 11, 2020:
@RoyMillar That sounds a bit optimistic. If my maths is right that equates to 63 miles per imperial gallon. I get up to 40mpg in my 12 year old impreza. I have had several Subarus over the years . I had one of the first in the country in around 1980. Slow and it handled poorly but it had 4WD. They improved greatly after that and the best I had was a turbo charged petrol model. Went like the proverbial shit of a shovel They have always been a bit behind the times. They took so long to get a diesel engine that they just about missed the boat. Moravian replies on Nov 11, 2020:
I think you have a point there. I have a friend with a hybrid Lexus and it appears to start off purely on battery power then the engine cuts in. If used on stop start journeys in town the emissions may be lower as obviously starting from rest requires more power and therefore more emissions. I think it would be minimal though.

Very true but hybrids are becoming more popular. What made me think of this was an advert for a new hybrid Lexus with a fuel economy of around 35 mpg. I have a 12 year old Subaru which does between 35 mpg and 40 mpg. Road tax i believe for the Lexus is £125 pa and I pay £250 pa. Seems a bit unfair.

Borrowing money to give tax breaks is going to give a boost to the economy as that money is spent but it is detrimental in the long term. Unemployment had reduced slightly under Trump until Covid struck but they would probably be mostly zero hour contracts in retail and the service industries.

Moravian replies on Nov 6, 2020:
@LiterateHiker Yes as the article says, the two larch species found in Washington are Sub Alpine larch and Western larch. The Sub Alpine being confined to the higher slopes obviously. The range of Tamarack is further north and east. Deciduous conifers include all the larches plus a few others including swamp or bald cypress. Northern larch is not a species and must be a local name to describe any larch sp. Golden larch is native to China and would not be found here.

@Spongebob Yes , I take your point but the main reason France has so many Islamic immigrants from North Africa is due to their colonial past. The majority of them are model citizens and the French authorities are handling the situation badly. For example stopping the sale of halal food is ridiculous. The young man who killed the school teacher was from Chechnya and the latest one from Morocco so to come down hard on the French Muslims is counter productive.

Moravian replies on Oct 31, 2020:
Well said. The following is from a friend who is an activist in the labour movement and the Palestinian situation. The Labour party have always taken this antisemitism scam seriously. Consequently they are over a barrel. The Zionist lobby will always invent an excuse to call Corbyn a Jew hater (There was one complaint that he put a German pronunciation on someone's name, therefore he was antisemitic and vile man: honest, I have not made that up. It was some actor who came out with that repugnant crap that was never called out for the pathetic, nonsensical smear that it really was.) Stamer is shitting himself everytime the latest antisemitic scandal hits the headlines. So, Corbyn is going to be expelled: he hasn't got a snowball's chance of surviving this one which was always going to come for him. An honest politician - which is a very rare thing - who virtually from the cradle has been against racism of any form, has been hounded as a despicable racist. The saddest thing is that people believe it. Says it better than I could.

Moravian replies on Oct 13, 2020:
@St-Sinner OK I give up. You haven't once addressed the point I made. You are saying that people still appeal to the goddess to save them from smallpox. A disease eradicated over 40 years ago. I am sure that they appeal to the goddess for other reasons but that's not what you said. Bye bye

@St-Sinner Nope, never been to India but I hope to visit my nephew in Kerela some time. I have no intention of visiting the crowded cities further north. I have lived and traveled widely in the USA though and I think that is extreme enough for me. I'm not sure what your motivation is in listing the negative aspects of the country. Does it make you feel superior ?. I believe Shitala is the goddess of infectious diseases but as smallpox was eradicated over 40 years ago why would people appeal to the goddess for protection against smallpox ?. As I said "Nonsense"

@St-Sinner https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUm6r-pDTmk I am sure most of what you say is true but that has nothing to do with the photo you posted with the ridiculous caption about smallpox. My nephew lives in Kerela where the woman in charge of the health board reacted immediately to stop the spread of covid 19' Compare that with the useless performance of the authorities in your beloved USA before you condemn your old country as totally backward and superstitious.

Since religion is given a tax-free status, why not give science a tax-free status?

People don't need tax free science, people need tax free everything in life. Education to the fullness of all knowledge, understanding, wisdom, skill, craft, trade and college certification of any kind free from taxation, free from tuition, free from loans, free from any fees.
Moravian replies on Oct 12, 2020:
@Word Well, since the word is listed in my trusty Collins dictionary I will have to accept that it is in current usage but I will only accept it as an adjective not as a noun. If you ever see an evil let me know.

Moravian replies on Oct 11, 2020:
@MakeItGood, @Word There is no such thing as "evil". It is a religious invention. Science is neither good or bad it just is. It is the application of science that can be good or bad. Science gave us nuclear weapons and some people would argue that they are good because they stopped the Soviet Union and the West fighting a conventional war.

Moravian replies on Oct 11, 2020:
@MakeItGood Yes I aware of that but to imply that this is the norm is very misleading. I have a young friend who attended Rhode Island art school at a cost of around $50,000 pa. Fortunately his parents could use inherited money to pay for much of the cost or he would have been lumbered with massive debts.

Moravian replies on Oct 10, 2020:
@MakeItGood If your education cost $160000 it was hardly free was it?. Not many students are as fortunate as you were. University tuition fees are genuinely free to the student in Scotland, for Scottish and EU residents only, which would total just under £40000 for the standard four year degree course. Grants are available for living costs which are paid back from earnings when the student starts working.

@Storm1752 I thought it was obvious. The "soul" must have thoughts and memories of the original person or the whole thing is a bit pointless. Alzheimers destroys the memories of the sufferer leaving a pathetic shadow of the original person and you are suggesting that this is reincarnated or enters eternal life ?. Both sad and cruel to suggest such a thing. Of course if I misunderstand what you mean by an afterlife please enlighten me,

@Storm1752 I think "sceptic" is putting it a bit mildly. Psychics are mostly charlatans who prey on bereaved people and "crop circles " ? Are you serious.?. I don't know if you have had anyone close to you die from the effects of Alzheimers. I have. To see a confident, intelligent ,articulate person gradually deteriorate to a mere shell without the ability to comprehend or even speak and finally die because the brain can no longer control breathing is horrible. To those who think there is some sort of afterlife I would suggest that it would be particularly cruel in a case like this or do they think there is a backup of memories in the "cloud" ;-)

@RoyMillar The traditional kilt is made from heavy material which would be a bit warm in summer but cosy in winter. I once saw a guy hiking the West Highland Way in a kilt and commented to him that he was a brave man with the number of midges around. His reply was "They wouldnae dare". I suppose the answer is to have a powerful curry the night before and create your own midge repellent system.

@callmedubious Very true, but when I see stories of ultra religious families in Israel and the bible belt in America having upwards of nine children I shake my head in despair. We constantly hear of the perils of overpopulation and yet countries like Japan with a low birth rate and an aging population and no real history of immigration are struggling, and the govt. in Hungary are offering tax breaks to families that have four children. We live in a crazy world.
