I thought I had stumbled on to feminists R us. It must have been an embarrassing experience for you. Regarding the girls in the high school it was actually my partner,an American woman. who commented to me that she thought leggings/tights without a dress or skirt was inappropriate dress. Regarding school uniforms in addition to ensuring that the dress is appropriate for the school environment it creates a level playing field where rich kids cannot show of expensive designer gear and make the poor kids feel bad; I'm sure that most girls can show their individuality in other ways; But that is just my opinion.

@Gwendolyn2018 You have my sympathy but bras are functional and ties are purely decorative. The UK business establishment tends to be a bit staid and conservative so it may be some time for it to change although I watched a BBC quiz show this evening where both of the presenters were wearing open necked shirts. Go back to the early days of steam radio and the newsreaders were required to wear dinner jackets. I'm sure it is much more relaxed in Australia. A few years ago during a heatwave I visited an office in town to find everyone wearing shorts. Secretaries, juniors, managers, everyone. One of the managers was a guy from Australia so I assume that he talked the office in to this sensible dress code.

@Gwendolyn2018 It appears to have changed markedly in silicon valley with very casual dress now the norm but in most business environments more formal attire is still the norm, certainly in the UK. @VeronikaAnnJ So to say that I am in favour of school uniforms and that pubescent schoolgirls shouldn't dress in a way that distracts teenage boys is stupid ? I'm sure a lot of parents would agree with me but try to get a willful young girl to dress differently from her peers ?. No chance. I have a friend who's daughters attend a private school where the dress code is a skirt/kilt below the knee and they all conform or are sent home. No problems. I spent much of my working life in office environments and never saw behaviour such as you describe and I agree that the situation was handled badly by your superior. @MattHardy You don't get irony then ? London is stab city with a knife crime on average every 12 minutes. Trump even mentioned it to deflect attention from the gun crime in America. By proportion of population percentage more knife crimes are carried out by black men than white men. A 14 year old kid on a stolen moped stabbed and killed. A young woman standing outside a shop was shot and killed. Glasgow had the "honour" of being knife crime capital a few years ago but it was sorted out partly by stop and search measures and social work within deprived areas and within the gangs. Police from Glasgow are now assisting the Met in combating this. Of course the BLM movement is necessary but for a young woman to play the race card because her feelings were hurt does not help matters.

@MattHardy You are putting words in my mouth. I am not backing any stereotype. It is statistically true that more BAME men are stopped and searched than white men and if this means that the police are systematically racist then that is something that needs to be addressed. I think it is ridiculous that possession of cannabis is against the law and I believe that possession and use of other drugs should be decriminalised, but that is the law and the police use stop and search to process this. Are you suggesting that young white men are never stopped. I know a couple of young guys who drive hot hatches with loud exhausts and they say that they have been stopped several times. We are talking about this one instance. The woman over reacted and the whole situation escalated. It sounds to me like "I am a famous athlete how dare you stop me". The BLM protests have brought to prominence the unfair treatment of ethnic minorities and rightly so and because of this any perceived unfair treatment of a black person will be given more publicity. I wonder if this had been a couple of white athletes would it have been given so much publicity.

So the proliferation of guns in the country causes paranoia. Because people have guns we need more guns.

I did say that the car was ALLEGEDLY being driven erratically so it is the drivers version of events against that of the police. If you are signalled to stop by the police, stop, block the road. What the hell, that is their problem. I remember once being signalled to stop by the police and I decided to carry on a few yards to a layby and the policeman acted as if I was trying to drive away. I saw the video clip from her phone. She was screaming as if she was being abducted. The police asked them to get out of the car so why not just get out instead of behaving like that. This is the UK, not some third world country or the USA. It is true that young black men are stopped and searched more often than white men but is that just because they are black or because more of the drug dealers are young black men ?. I don't know. Dos Santos said when he drove a Nissan hatchback he was never stopped. since he changed it for a fancy black Merc with tinted windows he has been stopped fifteen times. That would give me the impression that it was not purely because he is black but because of the car which is favoured by drug dealers . AS I said I think the police were a bit heavy handed in this instance and if it is found that they were at fault well so be it.

@Triphid A fascinating story. I remember a BBC TV drama set in a penal colony on the coast of Australia in the early days. I don't know how accurate it was but they were brutal times. I think the ANSAC troops were used in a similar way to the Scottish regiments in the empires wars. They were fearless fighters so they were put at the forefront of any offence so the casualties were much higher. In WW1 and 2 the % of soldiers killed that were from Scottish regiments was far higher than from English regiments. Visit any village in the highlands and there is a war memorial with a huge list of names. I recently read "birds without wings" by Louis de Bernieres. He writes about the Gallipoli battle but from the Turkish viewpoint and how one morning they awoke and the allied troops, mostly ANSAC soldiers had gone. Thousands were killed on both sides in a futile battle for a useless piece of land. One of the many shameful episodes in the history of the British Empire.

So I said " I take it your family go much further back then. As far as Botany Bay?. This stopped her talking, for about two seconds.
