@AnneWimsey Come on you are just being silly now. Of course it would be beneficial to get rid of plastics, especially single use plastic for several reasons but it is unlikely to happen' I watched the old girl's talk on TED to get a proper grasp of her research instead of an ill informed Guardian article and her idea is that genetically modified plants would take more carbon dioxide out of the air and transfer it to a more active soil flora. This could be achieved by modifying farming practices to previous ways of adding organic matter to soil instead of the modern practice of pouring artificial fertilisers on an annual basis. Ask yourself, who is funding this research ?. Is it some philanropist like Bill Gates acting for the public good or is it a company like Monsanto who can see a profit. She admits that the modified seeds will be more expensive and getting farmers to buy them may be difficult. I am pleased to say that genetically modified plants are not allowed in the UK and you can keep them along with the chlorinated chicken and beef pumped full of antibiotics.

@Zealandia I wouldn't take it personally. I think the main target is the Westminster circus and in particular head clown Boris Johnson. Actually a lot of English people have migrated up here to the highlands because it is a great place to live, and they are very welcome. You are as likely to hear an English accent as a local one. Over a third of the houses in my village are holiday homes and holiday lets and when the restriction on use is lifted on July3d there will no doubt be an influx from the south. Moravian replies on Jun 23, 2020:
@FrayedBear The River Tweed is mostly in Scotland but part of it forms the border. The river Till joins the Tweed from the south and is entirely in England. The dialect does look like lowland Scots or Lallans but as the border shifted north and south frequently there was probably a common dialect spoken on both sides of the border. According to Wikipedia Lallans was derived from old English which was spoken in Northumbria so it could have been written on either side of the border.

K@bigpawbullets The UK has had the second biggest No of deaths after the USA but the Nos per million has been much higher' The lockdown here started on 23d March. I think the USA was a bit later than that It was very badly handled from the beginning. It was thought at first that the "herd immunity" approach would work until it was realised that the health service would have been totally overwhelmed and people would be dying by the thousand. Prof Nial Ferguson who was the govt;s chief advisor iuntil he had to step down for welcoming his married lover to his house (naughty man) has now said that if lockdown had been a week earlier the death rate would have been halved. Isn't hindsight great. Like the USA the economy has been devastated and will probably take years to recover, but the alternative would have been worse. We are now gradually coming out of lockdown but it is a delicate balancing act. I wouldn't like to have that responsibility. .

I agree. This means also that there is no such thing as good or evil.

Evil is a religious invention. There is no such thing in nature. I recall having a little debate with a Christian about evil. I insisted that "evil" is a descriptive adjective but they said it could be a noun. I am still waiting for them to show me an evil.

Moravian replies on May 31, 2020:
The word atheist was first used by John Martiall in the 16th century and simply means without gods. The onus is on theists to prove that their gods exist not the other way round. It is interesting that all the god belief, certainly on this site anyway refers to the Judeo/Christian god and goes to show the theological baggage people are stuck with. I have yet to hear of anyone who thinks that there are Greek gods on the top of mount Olympus, or that Thor is still around in Norway. I sometimes wonder if those same people have read the old testament. I have in detail and there is no doubt in my mind that the polytheist Jews gradually became monotheists and their god was adopted to justify their acquisitive behaviour.

@WonderWartHog99 Ales should not be served below 40F, stouts a bit higher. Mass produced beers are so disgusting that they have to be served cold. A popular one brewed here in Scotland is Tennants lager. Disgusting stuff' The use of new world hops in craft brewing has produced some great tasting beers but they are more expensive so the beers cost more. A favourite brewer of mine is Six Point from New York. Great tasting but a bit on the strong side.

It is odd that America produces some of the best craft ale in the world and yet their mass produced beer is so bad that it has to be drunk ice cold to kill any taste that it has. It is a misconception that English beer is warm. Traditionally it is drunk at celler temperature or around 50 F' The real ale purists would as soon have it chilled as have it delivered to their glass using CO2 pressure.

In the '70's the Roman Catholic church still had a iron grip on the populace but today things are quite different. I would suggest thet joining the EEC and the consequent raising of living standards had more of an influence but it's all interesting stuff.

I could have told her that for nothing.
