I doubt if many people came to non belief the way that many came to religious belief. Most believers were indoctrinated from birth whilst although some non believers were never indoctrinated many were and in later life saw how nonsensical belief is. I wonder how many non believers took up religion later in life?. Very few I would imagine.

I pity the English and Welsh with the choice of a right wing buffoon or a dithering left winger. I think the Lib Dems are an irrelevance and the voters in NI have their own agenda. In Scotland we have a left of centre anti Brexit party in the SNP with a proven track record. I think the independence thing is overblown and even if a referendum is forthcoming too many people are afraid of the unknown to vote for separation. Our best hope is for a hung parliament with a minority Labour govt propped up by the SNP who can force more devolved powers to Holyrood.

Yuk. It looks disgusting. The first Kraft product I remember as a kid was Kraft cheese slices. I think they mixed cheese with vegetable oil and it had a plasticy texture but did taste a bit like cheese. It was good for making sandwiches as back the cheese was cut from a large bock by the grocer using a cheese wire and came in two colours. Orange or white.

It is thought that the last wolf in Scotland was killed in 1680 and despite the current interest in "rewilding" it is almost certain that wolves will never be introduced. Beavers have been reintroduced and there is talk of reintroducing European Lynx in a couple of places but that's about all. There is a wildlife park near where I live, really just a zoo where the animals have lots of room to move about in. and there is a small pack of wolves in a wooded area. Beautiful animals.

Once I delayed without knowing why and a car shot through the red light across my path. If I had gone as usual I would have been under the car. Well said George. We don't celebrate "Thanksgiving" here fortunately but the madness of "black Friday" is catching on fast. There is some unconscious humour attached though. An American friend put a photo on facebook showing her husband and sons making meatballs for thanksgiving dinner and I thought it was turkey everyone ate or are the meatballs just an aside ? One of her facebook friends commented " why are the boys balls smaller than Anthony's (their father)" made my day I referred her to a natural history documentary following a troop of chimpanzees where the testicles of the dominant male were much larger than the other males. I had a hangover,not uncommon in those days so I called off. The other two set off but only one came back. They had been traversing a steep slope on frozen snow and one guy must have slipped and slid down the slope and over a cliff. He died from severe head injuries. He was 21 years old. Neither were experienced hill walkers. both were from the south of England, and neither had crampons or an ice axes. I still go hill walking in winter but always take an ice axe and crampons. Although the hills here are rarely over 4000 ft in height we can experience arctic conditions most months of the year. . .

I know what you mean. I often have to do a lot of tongue biting. A neighbour does charity work in Nepal by helping to build toilet bocks in rural areas, which I find admirable even if it is organised by a church here in the UK. I was chatting to her and she mentioned a friend of hers who is living in one of the remote villages while he translates the Christian bible into their language. I think she was trying to convey the hardships the poor guy has to endure. I thought , how dare he. Those people have their own religion which is a mixture of Hinduism and Animist beliefs so what right has he backed by a church here to try to convert them to Christianity. It appears to me that the main difference between the animist type religions of the native Americans and the Abrahamic religions is that the former is inclusive and the other is exclusive. Animists believe they are part of and not separate from nature whereas the others believe that humans are separate and superior to the rest of nature. This story was widely reported over here and although it is sad for anyone to die in such circumstances I'm sure there are a few animal rightists cheering for the deer. What gets me is why was the hunter using a muzzle loading rifle.?. If a second shot is required to dispatch an animal it would take ages to reload and fire. There will probably be some gun lovers who will support it's use but if you go hunting use a modern hunting rifle not a museum piece.

The cross as a symbol was used long before Christianity and as the early christians used many pagan symbols, feast days etc it is quite possible that they changed the stake for the cross. I believe that JW's use the stake instead of the cross.

It was a long walk from the car park and we were only 500 ft from the summit when the conditions became very icy. We had ice axes but no crampons so had to turn back.It was disappointing but I did not fancy being airlifted of the hill with a broken leg or worse if things went wrong.

A shrub retains it's bushy form throughout it's life whereas a tree gradually grows to a much greater height . A young tree is not a shrub,but maybe he does accidentally hit on the truth. The study of a shrub is interesting but does not tell us anything about a tree and the study of ancient beliefs is interesting but does not really tell us much about the reality of the physical world as we now know it.
