@JackPedigo A great story. Sometimes looking at your ancestry may be a disappointment; The Applecross inn is famous for it's food and always busy. The Bealach na ba is now of what is called the "The north west 500" A circular route starting and finishing at Inverness and taking in the north west and north coast roads, Much of it still on narrow and single track roads, It has increased tourism but unfortunately attracts petrol heads in high powered cars trying to beat the recoed for the route. I attended a wedding at Applecross a few years ago camping at the site there overnight. My battered Subaru was surrounded by Porsche sports cars. The drivers "doing the 500". An incongruous sight in the remote highlands.

Moravian replies on Jan 29, 2020:
@Omnedon Very true. I think the cults in particular have a peculiar hold over their members. Another facet of human behaviour puzzles me. Victims of domestic abuse who hang around for months or even years to be constantly abused. I can understand that women in particular may be financially dependant on the other partner but surely a man could walk away. I read a fascinating biography recently called "The Nipper" by a guy who was physically abused by his drunken father until the kid was strong enough to stand up to him. The mother eventually had enough and left then the father had a girlfriend who had her own flat nearby and still turned up regualrly to be beaten by the drunk. As they say in the north of England." There's nowt as queer as folk "

There are other sects which are probably free of mysoginism but I would think that women are suppressed in all Islamic countries just as there still are to an extent in the Christian West.

@girlwithsmiles I don't think so although there were some atrocities such as the Armristar massacre when General Dyer ordered his troops to fire on a peaceable demonstration which killed hundreds. Partition was badly handled with the border between India and the new Pakistan being drawn on a map by an English civil servant and the British probably played the opposing religious groups against one another for their own ends.

Robert Powell certainly showed his acting ability. I don't know how he managed to keep a straight face when delivering some of the banal lines as Jesus.

I don't think that the film is an accurate account of any of the four biblical stories, and many people before have said that the bible stories themselves do not make any sense anyway. Moravian replies on Dec 23, 2019:
Yes the film was pure Hollywood.Classic quote from a roman legionaire towards the end in a pure NY accent. "Truly he is the son of gawd" It did follow the gospels to an extent in that it was the Jews who wanted Jesus crucified not the Romans. Telly Savalas as Pilate did the hand washing scene and not a lolipop to be seen

Well she has now been charged with death by dangerous driving and the US and UK have an extradition treaty so we will see what happens. Diplomatic immunity may be neccessary in many instances but in this case it was a total abuse of it.

@Marionville definitely the wrong leader and policies too far to the left. Corbyn became leader a bit like"Yes Prime minister" when Jim Hacker became Prime minister by default. @KKGator The reason for my comment was that the perpetrator of the recent terrorist attack in London who had been imprisoned for terrorism persuaded the authorities that he had been "deradicalised". Obviously he hadn't. Besides that there are far too many people in prison. The USA has the largest prison population in the world and the UK has the largest in Western Europe. For minor offences there must be a better way than locking people up.

@powder I have often wondered why Bush invaded Iraq and I still think He and Blair should be up on a war crimes charge in the Hague. We know Saddam was a nasty bastard but it was different when he was the USA's nasty bastard waging war against the pesky Iranians. I have heard it said that it was all about oil but I think it was more of a knee jerk reaction by Bush after 9/11 aided and abetted by the hawks in the govt and of course the arms manufacturers who benefitted greatly from the invasion.and of course Dubya wanted a little war just like his daddy. The American way is to weaken their "enemies" but not to defeat them but as you say they went too far in Iraq and the result has been disasterous.

There is empathy but there is also the practicality of letting thousands of migrants into a country. Housing.jobs etc and the fact that the existing population feel overwhelmed by peopke with a totally different culture. Angela Merkel showed great empathy in allowing tens of thousands of economic migrants from North Africa into Germany and it has probably been partly responsible for the rise in right wing nationalism in the country and throughout Europe. The USA has been responsible for much of the problem with the invasion of Iraq, the deposing of Gadafi. promotion of the Arab spring and backing the rebels fighting Assad in Syria so maybe Trump should allow some of them to settle in the USA. But of course he doesn;t like Muslims .or Mexicans,or people from shite countries so that is unlikely to happen.

@Barnie2years Possibly but I know that up to that point I did race away from the lights and this time I didn't. After that I may have been more careful. I think we all have a "sixth sense" that evolved in early mankind. Those who didn't have it were less likely to survive and breed,. There is also the strange feeling that sometimes you feel that you are being watched and you turn round and sure enough you are being watched. Of course there may be many times you are being watched and you don't have this feeling or you have the feeling and there is no one watching so it may be that you are getting a bit paranoid. Who knows.
