@KKGator The reason for my comment was that the perpetrator of the recent terrorist attack in London who had been imprisoned for terrorism persuaded the authorities that he had been "deradicalised". Obviously he hadn't. Besides that there are far too many people in prison. The USA has the largest prison population in the world and the UK has the largest in Western Europe. For minor offences there must be a better way than locking people up.

@powder I have often wondered why Bush invaded Iraq and I still think He and Blair should be up on a war crimes charge in the Hague. We know Saddam was a nasty bastard but it was different when he was the USA's nasty bastard waging war against the pesky Iranians. I have heard it said that it was all about oil but I think it was more of a knee jerk reaction by Bush after 9/11 aided and abetted by the hawks in the govt and of course the arms manufacturers who benefitted greatly from the invasion.and of course Dubya wanted a little war just like his daddy. The American way is to weaken their "enemies" but not to defeat them but as you say they went too far in Iraq and the result has been disasterous.

Moravian replies on Dec 2, 2019:
There is empathy but there is also the practicality of letting thousands of migrants into a country. Housing.jobs etc and the fact that the existing population feel overwhelmed by peopke with a totally different culture. Angela Merkel showed great empathy in allowing tens of thousands of economic migrants from North Africa into Germany and it has probably been partly responsible for the rise in right wing nationalism in the country and throughout Europe. The USA has been responsible for much of the problem with the invasion of Iraq, the deposing of Gadafi. promotion of the Arab spring and backing the rebels fighting Assad in Syria so maybe Trump should allow some of them to settle in the USA. But of course he doesn;t like Muslims .or Mexicans,or people from shite countries so that is unlikely to happen.

@Barnie2years Possibly but I know that up to that point I did race away from the lights and this time I didn't. After that I may have been more careful. There is also the strange feeling that sometimes you feel that you are being watched and you turn round and sure enough you are being watched. Of course there may be many times you are being watched and you don't have this feeling or you have the feeling and there is no one watching so it may be that you are getting a bit paranoid. Have you read Shlomo sand's book "The Invention of the Jewish people". I think you should. you may learn something. here is a little exerpt. "most modern Jews are descended from converts, whose native lands were scattered accross the middle east and Eastern Europe" I find prejudice against any group abhorrent and I couldn;t care less whether Riley is an atheist or a devout follower, to depict Corbyn as a racist whist he was actively protesting against apartheit was nasty and ridiculous .https://www.nbcnews.com/think/opinion/judge-rules-judaism-not-race-jewish-people-can-be-targeted-ncna896806 I think I will leave the last word to a judge in the USA

Only recently have they adopted Western style capitalism and yes they are major polluters but they are making serious attempts to mitigate this unlike the USA who are in danger of overturning years of progress. Trump and his backing by fundamentalist Christians are going against all this by withdrawing from the Paris accord and promotion of fossil fuels.

The mindset that the earth and all that is in it is there to be exploited has brought us to the situation we are in now with overpopulation, species extinction and global warming. The quote I took from the bible promotes this behaviour. If pagan religions had sustained instead of being replaced by the Abrahamic faiths would things be different ?. Maybe .No one will know but the fact that the followers of the Animist religions believed that they were part of nature rather that in charge of it would possibly have made a difference.

@Allamanda Firstly in Western Europe, the Roman Catholic church was christianity until the reformation and secondly most of the people practicing animist religions had been converted to christianity prior to urbanisation so we do not really know . How come ? the author intimates that the influence of the church was beneficial. I'm saying that the knock on effect of following the instructions in the old testament in subduing the earth and ruling over all the animals has brought us to the state the world is in today with overpopulation, species extinction and climate change. Of course we do not know how societies would have developed withut Christianity but the fact that followers of animist religions lived with nature rather than exploiting it would point to a better outcome.

I did not intend to imply that you believed it all and the main point I remember is that the church stopped first cousins marrying. This may be true but before the church kept records of marriage do we know that marriage between first cousins was common. Moravian replies on Nov 10, 2019:
Of course it was more complex and the churches possibly did some good but the European settlers with god on their side committed genocide in North and Central America, after all the natives were only primitive heathens weren't they. Re my comment about exploitation of the earths resources. For exampleThe native Americans lived in harmony with nature and exploited the American Bison as required . The colonists very nearly killed of the species as they did with the Passenger pigeon. If you haven't read "Bury my heart at Wounded Knee" by Dee Brown you should. It gives a perspective of the colonisation of North America from the Native Americans viewpoint. Not pretty reading. The roles of the institutions may have changed but Your president is using the Christian fundamentalists to help back his agenda of climate change denial and continued exploitation of fossil fuels so maybe they haven;t changed that much. As for hurting th feelings of those who value their Christian beliefs. that doesn't bother me in the slightest
