Obviously he hadn't. Besides that there are far too many people in prison. The USA has the largest prison population in the world and the UK has the largest in Western Europe.

We know Saddam was a nasty bastard but it was different when he was the USA's nasty bastard waging war against the pesky Iranians. I have heard it said that it was all about oil but I think it was more of a knee jerk reaction by Bush after 9/11 aided and abetted by the hawks in the govt and of course the arms manufacturers who benefitted greatly from the invasion.and of course Dubya wanted a little war just like his daddy.
The American way is to weaken their "enemies" but not to defeat them but as you say they went too far in Iraq and the result has been disasterous.

I wish I had heard of the Appalachian trail when I was younger. I have read several books written by hikers. fascinating stories. I am much too old now but I still get up in the hills summer and winter and often alone. I can't always find anyone daft enough to come with me.

@Allamanda I am certainly not romantacising the lives of pre christian societies and as can be seen by the fall of civilisations such as the Mayans they were susceptible to natural events.
Yes megafauna on several continents disappeared but were the human inhabitants solely to blame or were other factors involved.
I doubt very much if the native peoples deliberately killed them off as the European settlers did with the passenger pigeon and almost did with the Bison

I did not intend to imply that you believed it all and the main point I remember is that the church stopped first cousins marrying. This may be true but before the church kept records of marriage do we know that marriage between first cousins was common. It certainly didn't apply to the Eurpean royal families as this was common until fairly recently and many of Queen Victoria's children suffered from genetic abnormalities due to her marriage of a close relative.

Re my comment about exploitation of the earths resources. For exampleThe native Americans lived in harmony with nature and exploited the American Bison as required . The colonists very nearly killed of the species as they did with the Passenger pigeon. If you haven't read "Bury my heart at Wounded Knee" by Dee Brown you should. It gives a perspective of the colonisation of North America from the Native Americans viewpoint. Not pretty reading.
The roles of the institutions may have changed but Your president is using the Christian fundamentalists to help back his agenda of climate change denial and continued exploitation of fossil fuels so maybe they haven;t changed that much.
As for hurting th feelings of those who value their Christian beliefs. that doesn't bother me in the slightest

Actualy it is a brilliant true tale about the bond between a human and a semi domesticated wild animal and the discussion about the relative intelligence of apes and wolves is only a small part of it.
