I saw a recent commentary on Defoe's Robinson Crusoe and how the story fitted the mores of the time with black native Man Friday automatically becoming subservient to white Robinson Crusoe, so get with the times. There is a long running radio show here called "Desert Island Discs" where a "celebrity" is asked to choose six pieces of music and a book to accompany them to a desert Island. They are also allowed one other item and surprisingly I have not heard anyone choose a sex toy or blow up doll.

You agnostics ?. Yes I put tinsel in my hair and wear a couple of Christmas tree decorations as earrings. You will no doubt be aware that decorating the house with greenery at the winter solstice is a pagan practice that long predates Christianity and because of this some of the more extreme Protestant sects here will not allow a Christmas tree in the house.

I have a friend who swears constantly. There is a "fuck" in almost every sentence he utters. probably the result of spending most of his working life of fishing boats. I loved his little story about the time they had a Muslim in the crew and in a stormy North sea the guy tried to point himself towards Mecca to say his prayers. My friend's retort was "Your pointing yourself towards fucking Bergen man not fucking Mecca " I would love to take him to a meeting of prissy churchgoers to see their shocked reaction.

I had a hangover,not uncommon in those days so I called off. The other two set off but only one came back. They had been traversing a steep slope on frozen snow and one guy must have slipped and slid down the slope and over a cliff. He died from severe head injuries. He was 21 years old. Neither were experienced hill walkers. both were from the south of England, and neither had crampons or an ice axes. I still go hill walking in winter but always take an ice axe and crampons. Although the hills here are rarely over 4000 ft in height we can experience arctic conditions most months of the year. . .

I know what you mean. I often have to do a lot of tongue biting. A neighbour does charity work in Nepal by helping to build toilet bocks in rural areas, which I find admirable even if it is organised by a church here in the UK. I was chatting to her and she mentioned a friend of hers who is living in one of the remote villages while he translates the Christian bible into their language. I think she was trying to convey the hardships the poor guy has to endure. I thought , how dare he. Those people have their own religion which is a mixture of Hinduism and Animist beliefs so what right has he backed by a church here to try to convert them to Christianity. It appears to me that the main difference between the animist type religions of the native Americans and the Abrahamic religions is that the former is inclusive and the other is exclusive. Animists believe they are part of and not separate from nature whereas the others believe that humans are separate and superior to the rest of nature. I have read the book several times and really enjoyed but on reading this extract I have to disagree with his analogy.. A shrub and a tree are quite different. A shrub retains it's bushy form throughout it's life whereas a tree gradually grows to a much greater height . A young tree is not a shrub,but maybe he does accidentally hit on the truth. I think many are intelectually lazy. They go to church a couple of times a week to have their "faith" reinforced by listening to select passages from the bible and probably do not open the book for the rest of the week. At one time the "good book" was only published in Latin so that only the educated priests could read it so as to control the masses better. After the reformation the church of Scotland opened "grammar schools" throughout the country so that the people could learn to read and could read the scriptures for themselves. This probably backfired to an extent as some began to realise they were being conned and great thinkers such as David Hume emerged.

I hope the landlord is successful in suing for unfair dismissal. Some pub owners/landlords do behave like dictators. There is a famous pub in Edinburgh that used to be very busy. The new owner has a sign outside the door saying "no gypsies or students" It is always very quiet now. I was once told to leave a bar because I had long hair. Of course the landlord didn't say that. He said it was because I wasn't wearing a tie but there were several short haired guys in the bar not wearing ties. My mates and I ignored him for a bit then he suggested we all go down to the bottom of the garden to sort it out like men. He was a podgy middle aged man we were four super fit guys in our twenties. He was obviously suffering from early onset dementia so we took pity on him and left his pub.

I think it is a bit unfair to group all men together like this. I grew up in a household where my father worked and brought home (a meagre) pay and my mother did everything in the house. My father could just about make a cup of tea. I remember as a fifteen year old looking after him when my mother was in hospital. Like my siblings I moved out of the family home at 16 to bedsit land and had to learn to cook or starve. Certainly some of my schoolmates left the family home to get married and probably perpetuated this pattern but many men now take their share in all the chores. I do most of the cooking in our household as I am retired and my partner still works and to see my son confidently handling, changing and feeding his new son was amazing. I don't think colonisation can ever be justified but for example under the Ottoman empire Muslims.Jews and Christians coexisted quite happily but when the empire was broken up the trouble started. Same in India under the British Raj, but at partition all hell broke loose. There are some horror stories coming out of Canada at the moment. Because of the disruption of the Indigenous culture and removal of children from families to "Christianise" them the close family units have been disrupted and young women in particular are suffering. Apparently up to 1200 indigenous women and girls have been murdered or have disappeared over the past few years and no one has been charged with any of the murders.
