There are a few atheists on here but not many.Most call themselves agnostics.and I would reckon a few are closet theists. I was made to go to sunday school/church as a youngster but as soon as I left home I stopped going and took no interest in religion at all. I dated a religious woman a few years ago and she tried to get me interested so I did a bit of research and read widely including the new English bible. I quickly realised that the whole thing is based on mythology and has no factual basis whatsoever.

I know this has been said in similar ways many times, but had to respond to a Christian proselytizer...

I don't think "fate" is a very good word to use as it implies some supernatural influence or force. Certainly we are at the mercy of the environment we live in. Chance or luck plays a large part in our lives. There is an ongoing debate about how much control we actually have over our lives. Some "experts" think we have very little and are at mercy of our genetic makeup whist others think we have the ability to do as we please. A sort of nature/nurture debate. I think the truth is actually somewhere in the middle and can vary greatly from person to person.

I attended sunday school from the age of 5 to 15 in the Church of Scotland, which is quite puritanical compared to some branches of Christianity but I cannot remember any of this. It was something I had to do which spoiled my sunday but that is all. Maybe it was because we had no Christian rituals or indoctrination at home.

I thought the sun always shone in your fair country but of course it is mid winter with you. Most people here dry their clothes outside but be careful in the ultra religious western isles. If you have washing out on a saturday evening someone will phone to remind you. It is sacreligious to have washing out on a sunday. I frequently visit N.E. USA and I have yet to see any washing hanging outside. I wonder is it because it is against byelaws or are people frightened that their clothes will be stolen.
