You are talking about generational, long term monitoring. I do think about alterations at a genetic level that we all consume and the passed on effects to future generations; vaccines, GMO food, GMO feed consumed by stock, fluids. It is why monitoring is so important where you are not so much ...

Moravian replies on Apr 25, 2019:
@Jacar Very simplistic reasoning. Virtually all the terrorist attacks have been politically motivated. Politics and religion are a poisonous mixture and the political situation in the middle east and north Africa is the result of meddling by the west. After the break up of the Ottoman empire lines were drawn on a map to create countries with no thought given to ethnic. religious or tribal divisions. The only way to keep a lid on the unrest is to have a hard man despotic dictator as were in Libya, Iraq and Syria. The US in their wisdom decide to remove the dictators and try to replace them with their form of democracy and we are seeing the result.

Although I am sure fundies would refute it , but as you say religion has evolved. The Jews were originally polytheists and adopted monotheism possibly taken from Zoroaster. The early Neolithic settlements in the Orkney Islands north of Scotland have standing stone circles the main one being the ring of Brodgar which predate Stonehenge and archaeologists have deduced from burial practices etc that they had some sort of religion. Certainly the Christian religion has evolved to an extent but sadly Islam has a long way to go and needs "an enlightenment" Islamic apostate Ayan Hirsi Ali has written an interesting book on this. I would rather dance naked round a fire at Beltane with some nubile young women than sit in a dreary church listening to hell and damnation, but that is just me.

@johnprytz Certainly during WW2 a lot more food was grown by people in their gardens and redundant land was used for crop growing. Apparently with rationing the population was healthier than ever. Fast forward to a few years ago we had something called "setaside" in The EU where farmers were paid to leave land uncultivated because we were producing too much food. We are now so used to buying cheap supermarket chicken and pigmeat from factory farms with dubious welfare standards and processed food which tends to be unhealthy and nearly always has palm oil as an ingredient. Palm oil grown on what was rainforest in Brazil People are not going to give that up readily but climate change may force them to do it.

@FrostyJim I believe they used bog myrtle (Erica gale) here for flavouring prior to hops being used. A few years ago I lived in the south of England where hops grew wild so I collected some to put in my home brew. I obviously used far too much as the beer was so bitter it was undrinkable.

@FrostyJim Brewdog was started by two guys in a garden shed near Aberdeen, They expanded by crowd funding and now are international brewers and pub owners. I bought some shares a few years ago and am hoping they will float the company sometime so that I can get my money back and make a profit. Their signature ale is Punk IPA hence the equity punk label for investors. They have just built a brewery in Ohio so their beer should be more available in the USA now One plan was to build a pub on the US/Mexico border with access from both countries. Not sure what your president would make of that.

Moravian replies on Apr 14, 2019:
@VictoriaNotes Very interesting. I would not for a minute try to argue with those learned psychologists and maybe I have misunderstood the meaning of empathy but I understood that it meant purely to be able to understand how a person felt whether in an unhappy situation or a happy situation. I'm sure we have all said "I feel for you" or "I am happy for you" but I cannot see how it could be compared to a drug. I suppose if you are close to a person and they are feeling bad then having empathy means you can share that pain and even make the person feel slightly better. but that is all. Surely to take it further is compassion not empathy Again it the person is happy and you share in that happiness it may give you a slight lift but that is all. I see what they are saying but personally I think they are exaggerating or does that mean that I don't have empathy after all.? I suppose anything that bonds people in a group could have evolutionary benefits so empathy probably comes in to that category

@VictoriaNotes what I meant was having empathy or being able to understand how another feels is not in itself harmful but if that ability is used to harm the person then it becomes immoral or unethical or something like that. I would like to think that I am an empethatic person but I have known as I am sure we all have people who appear to be totally lacking empathy. I'm not sure if altruism could be used in the same way as it is the selfless concern for another.person which is probably an evolutionary trait. As social animals it must be beneficial to aid others in the group

@FrostyJim Sounds like every beer drinkers dream job ;-). I believe there is a battle going on in CAMRA at the moment between the old guard who favour the cask conditioned hand pulled ale whilst the younger members are in to the newer craft ales which tend to be filtered and served chilled. I really like some of the new ales from the small brewers but I think I am with the old guard . I can remember when CAMRA started. The big brewers were frantically buying up the small guys and phasing out local beers. CAMRA did a great job so I hope they can keep going despite their problems.
