It is still common in the UK for the newly married bride to take the husbands name although I know of one couple who took the wifes name. It appears to be the practice in the US for the wife to keep her maiden name as a sort of middle name. Not common here.

Thanks for the link. I rarely suffer leg cramps whilst hiking but am frequently woken in the night with cramp in one calf. More often right than left. I try to limit my intake of salt due to hypertension and don't drink much in the evenings to avoid having to get up in the night for a pee so that could be one reason. Worse than that is cramp in the thigh muscle. A few times after an all day strenuous trek I have had cramp whilst driving home. Trying to find a spot to park and hop around and stretch to ease it can be a problem whilst other drivers look at me as if I have gone crazy.

It was around 1973 that a private members bill was presented to the house at Westminster. It was called "The night assemblies bill" and attempted to restrict the number of people gathering together overnight to a very small number. It was aimed solely at rock festivals which were becoming common then. I mean we can't have those bloody hippies getting together, listening to the devils music,taking drugs and fornicating all weekend can we ?. Well over half of weddings here are now non religious, mostly "humanist " weddings. Unlike England where weddings must be held in recognised places like churches or registry offices weddings in Scotland can be held anywhere. My son was married last month in a beautiful rented holiday home in the remote west highlands with wedding photos on the beach in the rain.
