BREXIT. What the hell was that all about. Lots of hot air and voting and nothing has changed

It's how British politicians work to sabotage the referendum decision. They can't allow ordinary people to make important decisions like that.

@PBuck0145 Scaremongering nonsense. I am not a great fan of Peter Hitchens.I preferred his brother Christopher. The second guy is your typical little Englander and the third was rabbiting on about undermining our constitution when I lost interest. Britain does not have a written constitution. With the absolute mayhem occurring at the moment how anyone can say that leaving is a good thing is unbelievable. It is now quite possible that we will leave with no deal which will set the country back 10 years or more. "Less influence than an American City in the USA" What a load of rubbish. Like Trump in America with his Make America Great Again nonsense ,Johnson.Davis,Rees-Mogg,Gove and their ilk are in the same deluded mould. Defence secretary Williamson is on record as saying that after Brexit The UK will be a power in the world again and can assert herself. Sure if the USA lets us. People like that worry me.

Moravian replies on Jan 31, 2019:
On any one year this may be true depending on the type of forest, but at the end of the year the grass dies and is recycled whereas in the woodland, although the leaves are recycled the tree lays down carbon in the timber. This is from measurements taken in Australia ;- "Based on data from typical perennial grasslands and mature forests in Australia, forests are typically more than 10 times as effective as grasslands at storing carbon on a hectare per hectare basis" Going back to the conclusions of the university. I think they are just trying to justify their large grants. There was a slight dip in the CO2 levels in the late 16th century but not enough to lower the temp by 1C. the little ice age started in the 14th century and the decimation of the indiginous peoples probably peaked in the 17th century. The reduction in CO2 may have had a slight bearing on temp but there were two periods of low sunspot activity and lower solar output so this together with volcanic activity may have had more effect

I find that very debatable. An area of grass contains only a fraction of the carbon in a forest. also the findings of the learned gentlemen is very suspect. The little ice age was not a global phenomenon but localised to areas in the northern hemisphere.

@PBuck0145, @Sofabeast Well, I am one of the elderly and I voted remain. I realise that the EU is far from perfect but it is better than the alternative. I really do not know what motivates the likes of Farage but he feeds in to the fears and prejudices of not particularly well informed people. Being one of the wealthier countries in Europe of course there is a net cost to the UK but there are lots of benefits as well. I travelled round Ireland in 1968 and the difference from the UK was very marked. It was almost a third world country. Now it is one of the wealthier countries in Europe and that is because of EU membership. Surely it is worth the loss of some minor decision making

The "people" are not fit to make such important decisions on their future and judging by the farce that is Westminster neither are their elected representatives.

@Stevil I was thinking more of dedicated cycle tracks as they have in the Netherlands rather than just cycling on the edge of the road. I haven't cycled in Europe for some time but I felt safer there than in the UK. I was a motorcyclist as well as a cyclist for many years and I gave that up as it appeared that every car driver was out to get me. You have my sympathy trying to cycle in the USA. I did a 6000 mile motorbike road trip but kept mainly to minor roads so it was ok. The standard of driving on main roads is appalling with much worse lane discipline and tail gating than here. I take your point about e bikes but I have a friend who is a very keen road cyclist, I keep to offroad these days, and his wife accompanies him on her ebike.. BestWithoutGods comments on Jan 28, 2019:
Almost everything in the Bible strikes me as weird. My theory is that it was written as fiction, and at first people understood it that way. Then at some point people started teaching it as if it were true. That's when humanity really got messed up.
Moravian replies on Jan 28, 2019:
There is a lot of truth in that. Genesis is pure creation mythology. Exodus is a fairy tale which did not happen. The rest is fiction mixed with a little bit of Jewish history. The Jews were originally polytheists and it certainly appears to me that Yaweh was invented to justify their acquisitive warlike behaviour.

@Stevil The roads in US cities are mostly wider then in European cities so there is plenty of room for cycleways. There are probably no votes in it so politicians couldn't care less. Western interference in Iran goes way back to when the Anglo Iranian oil company was nationalised has had knock on effects right up until today To say that the USA made the Soviet Union invade Afghanistan is a bit naïve. 4. bad blood between sectarian groups in the former Yugoslavia go way back to previous Soviet times and the break up gave them a chance to settle old scores. It was handled badly by the UN though. 5. Surely the Korean war shows the futility of war. Thousands dead , a country devastated and after it all nothing gained.

Kept America's military industrial machine ticking over though." Fought on the wrong side" ?. not sure what you mean by that.In manufacturing blue collar workers are gradually being replaced with robots and this will continue. Birth rates in developed countries are falling and in decades to come immigrants will be welcomed instead of being turned away as at present. Even China is concerned at their their aging population. The one baby policy has long been discontinued and they are now trying to encourage people to have more babies. Aw. so you didn't get the 7 inches promised then, just like the news girl. https://www.truthorfiction.com/tvanchor/ I'm sure I remember seeing the actual newscast when the newsgirl said to the weatherman "what happened to that 6 inches you promised me last night,"

How can modern man believe in a God?
Dajokn comments on Jan 1, 2019:
A lot of people still believe in gods in a cultural sense, but there are far fewer people who really believe the mythology now, and those tend to be in pockets of (usually willful) ignorance. Modern man is still capable of believing some pretty ridiculous things (bigfoot, aliens, Trekkies, etc), ...
Moravian replies on Jan 15, 2019:
I think you can add astrology, psychics, and the lies of politicians to that list. In the animal world particularly with social animals such as apes it is a biological necessity for the survival of the that they obey the instructions of the parents. If those instructions include dogma it will be hard wired into the children's brain.Remember the Jesuit's claim "give me the child to the age of seven and I will give you the man" In the UK where belief has been reducing for it will continue to reduce as fewer parents indoctrinate their children, Drive around the UK and in every town you will find churches either empty converted for other uses. In the USA, particularly in the bible belt churches are not only still very common but huge new mega churches are being built. Children are still being indoctrinated so belief will most likely last much longer.

Larry-new comments on Jan 9, 2019:
The seventies were where I recuperated, from the Haight '60's, and moved away from the SF west coast scene...listened to anything but rock, and told myself not a new riff was being played. Later, I saw that there were indeed listenable tunes, but you had to have been to the before.

The 70's.. the decade that fashion forgot. Rock music morphed into pretentious prog rock and then the breathe of fresh air called punk. There is always good music around but you have to look for it.

Intervention by the USA in any other country is for the benefit of the USA. Any benefit the other country is just coincidental. Flawed reasoning Trajan. The "Latino" immigrants are poorer and have a smaller carbon footprint than richer Americans, and how do you think the Californian grape crop would be picked without Mexican immigrants. As countries get wealthier the birth rate drops. Italy, the home of Roman Catholicism has one of the lowest birthrates in Europe. To sustain current ppulations a birthrate of 2.1 is needed. The developed Western countries currently average 1.6 so in the future you will need the immigrants

The replacement ratio sustain the current population is 2.1 1. Western industrialised countries and including Japan and South Korea are currently averaging 1.6 1. In fact South Korea is currently around 0,96 1. Third world countries certainly exceed this but as countries become wealthier population increase drops dramatically.. So it is in our interest give foreign aid those poor countries eventually cut the population increase. Of course as countries become wealthier they use more of the worlds finite resources including fossil fuels which will exacerbate climate change,so either way we are fucked !!!
