@creative51 Yes. I know that. I can cite my father who was proud of my mother's intellect. I can also vouch for my husband and 4 sons. And when I think of my male friends, they too are all comfortable with intelligent women. But my friends are chosen because of what they think. Just remember half your country voted for an imbecile over a woman, albeit there were other factors than just her sex. I wonder tho how much gender played a part.

@dahermit the consensus today is the environment and perhaps more importantly epigenetics (which accounts for different character traits over just a generation or two) work together with genes. @JackPedigo I'll check out Adam Ruin's Everything episode of which you speak. (I'll just boast and say it is on our 'free to air' tv here in Aus with all episodes). I find some logic in what you say because of the imbalance in our ecosystem. I don't actually believe humans are more important than any other animal on this planet. So when I see that the consequence of human overpopulation causes the extinction of other animals eg orangutans, koalas, polar bears and thousands of other species, not to mention the damage to the environment, I question the importance of human life. However, just as I am horrified by the thought of animals dying as a result of land clearing, I can't condone ignoring the plight of people in need. With the right distribution of wealth, the planet is able to sustain the population (though not much more I suspect). As humans with empathy it is our responsibility to care for those who are unable to care for themselves. Not because it could be 'me' one day but because we care. Gov'ts have done a good job at encouraging us to blame the homeless and unemployed. Very few want to live in poverty and on the streets. You need to dig a little deeper, see how unemployment erodes one's self-esteem and dignity, how it affects the mind, how depression takes over the soul until one is unable to act, to face going for a job interview, or even interact with others. It is so hard to come back from that. This is why these people, these precious human beings need our compassion and help. Would you kick a kitten in the gutter? I doubt it. Can't you try to understand those less resilient and capable than you? Each have a history that has brought them to this point.

@Closeted Sorry you misunderstand because I'm Australian. Many Americans don't do irony or satire humour. Australians are rarely literal. In Aust, we have an independent free to air tv station. It is funded by the government and is supposed to be impartial (tho many say it has a more left wing agenda). Anyway before the election, the show Four Corners featured a story on Trump, interviewing tradespeople who went bankrupt as a result of Trumps dealings. It also showed him networking with gov't official so they would fund his projects or get the go ahead when there were obstacles. He could get projects done without putting money down. His balls should be massive except Stormy squashed that rumour You will find Four Corners episodes on youtube, many about TRump. Thing is because it is funded by the government (and our right wing gov't don't like it very much and would love to shut it down for libel) the reporting has to be credible.

@Jolanta exactly so. Distribution of wealth is key. No one needs to have millions of dollars and no one deserves it. In yours and my country some people are working 60 hrs a week while others have no jobs. It isn't right. I know a man who turned to ice and became homeless at 48. MsDemeanour replies on Dec 30, 2018:
@Secular_Squirrel I am not exactly sure what we are arguing about. I have said that the environment is equally significant as genetic make up when it comes to behaviour. Are you saying they're not? Are you saying that it's all about nurture? or that it is much more about nurture? Are you saying that all these 'cluster B' people are a result of the environment in which htey were raised? And that with a change of environment and habits, they can change? Many of these people don't even recognise they have a problem. As I mentioned earlier I am not a big believer in labelling people (or the DSM for that matter). Diagnoses differ depending on who gives them. No one fits ALL symptoms and symptoms overlap. there is no list of symptoms saying what is normal. People should be seen as individuals. It's time to stop labelling and stigmatising and promote mental diversity. MsDemeanour replies on Dec 29, 2018:
@Secular_Squirrel Not all cluster B ppl have been physically or emotionally abused which brings us back to the genome. When it comes to the nature vs nurture debate most studies support the combination of these two. Extensive twin studies have shown that even when there is identical DNA one twin brought up in a nurturing family will not develop mental illness. The other, brought up in an abusive home develops schizophrenia. The genes are there but conditions have to be right for them to be activated. Or to describe it your way, the neural pathways can be entrenched because of external factors. What I think is more interesting is when identical twins from the same nurturing background, can develop so differently. One with bipolar, the other without. This is thought to be from epigenetics. No time to go into it all now but what you eat now, how anxious you are, whether you smoke, life expectancy, can impact on your your twin grandchildren. Despite them having identical genetics, one twin may be tagged by your epigenetics and become an alcoholic. this is probably detouring off topic but I find it fascinating.

MsDemeanour replies on Dec 29, 2018:
@Secular_Squirrel I certainly agree with that nurture as well as nature causes the activation of certain genes. I probably don't agree with people surviving alone. It is well documented that we are pack animals and to be ousted from the pack meant certain death. I believe they served a purpose for the group. Did you know that there is much speculation that the reason that the schizophrenia gene didn't disappear through natural selection is because it was so valued by the clan. These people were seen at the Sharman's of the tribe. The bible is riddled with single people who had visions of god. I don't think there is a single episode of god talking to a crowd of people. Autism too was valued by the tribe with their attention to detail. It is time we again embraced mental diversity.
This will probably offend someone too...

MsDemeanour replies on Dec 28, 2018:
@Secular_Squirrel Very interesting thread. I'd like to make a couple of points. I think it unfair to group what you call cluster B ppl together. I have yet to see two suffering bi-polar or schizophrenia exhibiting identical traits. Just as there is an autism spectrum or continuum, I believe these cluster B or narcissistic types are on a continuum., some exhibiting more antisocial behaviour than others. My other point is about natural selection. Why is this trait still so prevalent? What was it about this genetic make up that made it valuable in our ancestry? I would say it is because these people are the go-getters. Nothing and no one stands in the way of their purpose. AS you can see they're often world leaders. They're CEOs or they're in jail. These people motivated others, either by force or inspiration, to move mountains. I believe this ruthless trait is no longer helpful in modern day society, especially by our leaders. Anyway that's my take on it.

@Gwendolyn2018 You were very patient. I would've said not to waste your breath here. A more biased viewpoint I have yet to find. I can only answer for my country but here in Australia one woman is killed daily, as a result of domestic violence. I know domestic violence occurs to men. My own brother is a victim and because he is co-dependent he continues to return to the bitch. But to infer that women are just as violent or predatory as men is just preposterous. Apart from that Stephen King movie, how many women keep men in the basement? These are the statistics from our last census: there were 3,094 women and 35,745 men in Australian adult corrective services facilities. I don't know what they are in USA but can only imagine they're comparable.
