Where did the idea that men are predators and women are the prey come from?
Nicetomeetyou comments on Apr 26, 2018:
Well, lots of women have been raped. However, I believe there are predator men out there who commit more than one. So, just because 1 out 4 women experience a sexual assault, doesn't mean that 25% of men committed sexual assault. I believe that men are primed for it from an early age.

OpposingOpposum replies on Apr 27, 2018:
And yet many women regret that and are troubled that they feel they can't do these things. Being aware of your surroundings and having some self defense know how is huge. Sadly most women don't seek these options out until after they're victimised. If we treated girls as we do boys, teqching them self defense as part of the parenting process,it opens their worlds up.

OpposingOpposum replies on Apr 27, 2018:
@ashortbeauty. I was molested as a child, as were a large number of my cousins. I have been raped as an adult. I know how awful people can be but I also know that MOST people are not that awful. I know that my behaviour didn't bring about any of the abuse that I endured. The actions were the choice of my attackers and while they may have loved to lay blame at my feet. Its just not true. The things women do do not CAUSE us to be raped.

I think the percieved risk of normal behaviours is wildly skewed, yes. The risks of walking down the street, going to bars, venues or theaters, wearing certain types of clothing,make-up etc is wildly exaggerated. In my neighborhood, I'm the crazy cat guy. The man across the street used to feed the neighborhood strays. My daughter had a cat that had to stay outside due to his habit of scent-marking. I kept his food out on my front porch. The man across the street passed. His cat-friends started helping my...

Is attraction a choice?
OpposingOpposum comments on Apr 24, 2018:
Nope. Judging others for who they're attracted to is. That being said, men who like the media generated ideal are automatically out the door for me for multiple reasons, as are those attracted to underage girls. It may not be your choice but its still gross.

I have and my take away from it was that it created a sense of intimacy and closeness that DID not translate well when we met in person. In a commited relationship where you already know the person, I think it's fine but I'll never start that up with someone I haven't physically met again.
OpposingOpposum replies on Apr 24, 2018:
@Kojaksmom it seems our conversations led him to believe I was "liberal with my favors" shall we say, which turned into a conviction that I was being unfaithful. He also decided that since I enjoy sex it meant I was incapable of real emotional connections. Just... Weird ideas men have about sex I guess.

OpposingOpposum replies on Apr 24, 2018:
@kenriley and you're right about it not being neccesarily safe here. I'm well aware that I could be stalked for the crimes of being on social media and being vocal about womens issues. It won't shut me up or make me hide though.

I think advising someone of the dangers of doing certain things is obviously fine, so I don't understand your objection.
OpposingOpposum replies on Apr 24, 2018:
@KenG because on TOP of those things we're also told not to do very common and neccesary things like:dress a certain way, walk down the street, talk to strangers, be a prude, be a slut, be a bitch, be fat, be skinny, be black the list goes on and on and on of things women MUST not do if they don't want to be victims. And none of it works anyway. Nuns and old women and small children, plain girls and fat girls, girls wearing skirts or pants make up or no make up all end up being raped just the same. All of these things we're told not to do and options we're forbidden from taking for safeties sake DON'T ACTUALLY OFFER any guarantee of security. The only things that prevent rape are a lack of rapists and intended victims that can successfully fight back.

OpposingOpposum replies on Apr 24, 2018:
Yes. It happens. More often women are brutalized in their homes by those closest to them. Shall we stop having families to be safer? Stranger Danger is wildly sensationalized when it only account for around 30 % of assaults. Women aren't told "don't get born into the wrong family" or "dont get married" when those are actually the two riskiest things we DO as women. It's nonsensical to tell someone they should live their lives in fear and depend on "big strong men" to defend them as a way to live safely. Particularly when those "big strong men" are the one likeliest to pose a risk to us.

@NicoleCadmium agreed. Its also IMO about being capable of self defense. Whether thats fighting, running away whatever it takes to come out of one of those bad luck situations unharmed. The most alarming take away for me wasn't the troll replies. It was the sincere replies from men and women who STILL believe that women are innately weaker(not necessarily physically) and need extra protection or have to excercise extra caution. They see no conflict at all and don't understand how treating women like children stunts them as human beings. Idk. Perhaps I'm wrong but have yet to hear an argument convincing me that I am.

@sarahjustme no but it does mean that the odds are roughly the same no matter where I go. Knowing that, I'll go where I want and do what I want. Taking reasonable precautions while not hobbling myself with constant second guessing.
