Republicans must lie to survive: They have no other choice | Salon.com
t1nick comments on Oct 12, 2019:
It's interesting I have been posting these exact points over the last year regarding both Trump and Reagan. The idea that Reagan was a great president is ridiculous. I lived through him and disdained his lack of intellect at the time. Trump is even less impressive in the intellect category.
Paul4747 replies on Oct 12, 2019:
@t1nick Reagan actually did have some conservative concepts, in the old fashioned meaning of the word. He was a fairly decent individual and believed in treating people well. He even believed in Social Security. He would never have indulged in such arrogant and selfish behavior as Trump, and he certainly never belittled others the way this one does. Did he engage in the rough & tumble of politics? Of course, but he didn't disrespect his opponents as human beings.

He pretty clearly sees himself as the center of the world and lies in any way he can to inflate his own ego and self-portrait. The worst thing, to me, is that his followers accept his fictions uncritically and see all the fact-checking as attacks, not as reality. This is possibly because they've tied their political and personal identities to his, and so they can't bear to think they've been so foolish as to bind "their names, their fortunes, their sacred honor" to a con man and a liar. It's also very likely because Trump is so good at attracting those whose tribal instinct outweighs everything else, and when the head man of the tribe is "attacked", their only response is to circle the wagons. I haven't completely given up the idea of reaching Republicans through appealing to their rationality, but it does seem more hopeless by the day.

@St-Sinner Sending text messages to the person you're having an affair with, criticizing some politicians, makes you part of the "Deep State"? Neither of them were whistle-blowers, they were assigned to the Mueller investigation. That's all. For that matter, Strzok suggested a special counsel to look into Hilary and disliked Eric Holder, evidently. I would hate for anyone to look into my text messages. They would probably conclude I'm an operative for the Reptilicans from Pleiades VII.

@WilliamFleming Overall farm production in the last 70 years, yes, due to agribusiness, economies of scale, and improved technologies. Individual small farmers who live from year to year, on the other hand, are now dealing with the impact of unpredictable weather and it is hurting them. I certainly can blame the rise in sea levels on CO2, since new data is showing that levels have risen incrementally, not a steady "3mm/year". https://climate.nasa.gov/climate_resources/163/video-new-study-finds-sea-level-rise-accelerating/ You can't melt polar ice and have it go nowhere.

That's a load of, with all due respect, moose pucky. Plenty of people at the time had a problem with the ad, for one thing. Just like Reagan's 1984 "Wolves" ad, and Bush's similar 2004 ad. Using scary imagery in wartime (it was the Cold War, after all) is nothing new, and saying that your opponent can't be trusted to handle National Security goes back to the Civil War at least. Trump is different. Accusing Congress of plotting a coup via impeachment proceedings is saying that the law isn't the law. Imagine the furore the Republican party would have put on if Bill Clinton had said anything even hinting at this during the Lewinsky scandal. But, again, their standards are different when it's one of their own.

Paul4747 replies on Oct 5, 2019:
@Captain_Feelgood Gotcha. Whether a Democrat had prior contact with a whistleblower (knowledge that could potentially be put together to out said confidential whistleblower, by the way, something Trump has stated publicly he wants to do, along with the right wing calling him/her a "traitor", and considering it may be someone in the intelligence community might well cost them their career)- that's the issue, not whether a President of the United States tried to get a foreign government to dig up political dirt on a rival; something Trump already and unapologetically has admitted. Not only unapologetically, but cheerfully. Shit, we knew this in 2016, when he was cheering for Wikileaks ("a wholly owned subsidiary of the FSB") to leak the DNC emails. But that was as a private citizen. Now it's with the ability to hold up $400 million in military aid dollars, *which he did*. *Trump boasted that he has the unfettered right to ask a foreign government to dig up dirt on his domestic political rivals.* This can't be said enough. Ask yourself the question: if President Obama or Secretary of State Clinton had asked Putin for information about Trump's building permits in 2015, when his hat was in the ring as a Republican candidate, would you have been saying "There's nothing there?" Or would you have been screaming about the dirty tricks they were playing? I already know the answer, but I doubt you can be honest enough with yourself to admit you would have been screaming, along with the rest of the Republican party. You have a cult of personality where, even though Trump tells 12 lies a day, 1 lie by a Democrat (which, as I read it, may have been to prtect the whistleblower) is damning beyond belief and exonerates Trump completely. Your guy? He sickens me.

Except that he *hasn't* made any better trade deals; his understanding of what causes trade deficits is on the level of a 5 year old. Deficits are caused by Americans buying more finished goods from abroad, not by those naughty foreigners refusing to buy American. His solutions to immigration and the like are actually behind the curve since illegal immigration has been going down for years and his "response" has been to tell asylum seekers that they should just go back and be tortured. "Reducing regulations" has been a Republican plank forever, there's nothing new in Trump spouting it. And so Trump came to DC, used his position to appoint his family and close friends to influential positions, used his office to enrich himself because foreign dignitaries (who know which side their bread is buttered on) stay in Trump hotels when they come to visit, cut a deal with Putin to build a Trump hotel in Russia *while campaigning for the White House*, and also did nothing, other than cut taxes on the rich. Paul4747 replies on Oct 1, 2019:
@vjohnson51 And yet it's more coherent than the actual text. This should be worrying to Xians. And then there's the Shi'a Muslim interpretation that it was not pride which led to Satan's expulsion from Heaven, but love. God originally tells his angels to kneel only before him; then he creates Man and tells his angels to kneel in awe before Man, his great creation. Satan so loves God that he can't bear to kneel before anyone else. And so Satan in Hell is God's greatest worshipper, and the only thing that sustains Satan in the loneliness of Hell is the memory of his beloved's voice telling him, "Begone." The fire and torture is actually a late development. Originally, Hell was cold, and the pain of Hell was simply being deprived of the presence of God. There is a rich history of religious and literary tradition revolving around the devil character, and almost none of it originates in the Bible. (Lucifer, by the way, was the King of Babylon, not the Devil. Lucifer, or "Light Bringer", "Morning Star", is the Latin name for the planet Venus.)

@St-Sinner It is true that Trump coined the term "fake news" for any actual news that casts him in a negative light (which is, basically, any news about anything). It's also true that this term was widely adopted by his followers as a put-down for the mainstream media when the news carries stories that reflect badly on the conservative agenda. What does that have to do with the link you cite from an industry shill with a clear agenda of reducing governmental regulations? Why should we not uncritically accept the CEI as a source? Because they are not a news-gathering organization or scientific organization, they're an industry promoter and cheerleader. They're dedicated to resisting regulation, in the name of maximizing profit. Put it this way; their commentary on climate change is worth about as much as the Vatican's advice on what to do about pedophile priests.

Paul4747 replies on Sep 14, 2019:
@mcgeo52 The actual real proof has been there for 18 years. The same people who attacked the USS Cole, who made coordinated attacks on our embassies worlwide, who had plotted to hijack a dozen airliners and blow them up over the Pacific (luckiliy that failed), were the conspirators in the 9/11 attacks. I doubt you've considered the cockpit voice recordings, the phone calls from passangers on the hijacked planes, the mass confusion of the government's response, all pointing to the complete shock of this event which nobody saw coming on that day- except for a very few antiterrorism experts, who had been warning about something like it for years. To claim that this was a conspiracy also posits that it was an alliance between the US Government and Al Qaeda. You have to show a single scrap of evidence for that. Also, explain how not a single tenant of the building (thousands escaped) ever reported seeing the demolition materials being moved in. How no camera footage survived showing it being placed. How a government that can't cover up a President getting oral sex from an intern and is utterly incompetent at almost anything it does, according to its critics, is also so amazingly competent at this conspiracy. And how not one of the hundreds of people who would have to be involved has not come forward by now to reveal their role. It would make them millions in talk show fees and book deals, and yet they remain silent. That goes against human nature- just like the so-called JFK conspiracy. (By the way- that was Oswald acting alone.) Go drink your kool-aid, maybe get a dog, read the 9/11 commission report, and come to terms with reality. Massive conspiracies don't exist for long without being revealed. The best clue that this wasn't one? You still have no evidence, just sinister allegations. Yep, this conversation is over.

@mcgeo52 This source says nothing like what you posted about "dark gray boxes" being found. So, you're challenging one account of the flight recorder being found with a different account of the flight recorder being found, to say that no flight recorder was found, because it wasn't a plane? The wing and engines didn't sit intact out on the lawn, they hit at hundreds of miles per hour and shattered into their component parts. As for your earlier replies (which I hadn't noticed until now), you postulate a conspiracy between Al Qaeda to hijack at least 3 airliners (2 that hit the Towers and 1 that was crashed into the field outside Shanksville PA), and the US Government to demolish the Towers with explosives that were somehow smuggled in and placed, without anyone noticing, and set up on *the exact floors that the planes were then crashed into* so it wouldn't look suspicious when the Towers started collapsing from a different level than the ones the planes hit? So the hijackers were expert enough to hit an exact floor of the WTC, give or take 10, and pick a different level on each tower? The towers actually did survive being hit by the 757s. The crashes did not take them down. The fires that burned for almost an hour weakened the structural components, already damaged by the collision, finally causing the collapse. Had first reponders been able to concentrate on a single tower, who knows? They may have been able to save the building. But it was never anticipated that two airliners would be deliberately crashed by terrorists into both towers at once. We did not fathom the evil that our enemies were capable of. And I use that word deliberately. I personally cannot fathom those who insist that "the truth" is other than the truth, and insist that the REAL enemies are in here with us; and no matter how much evidence is brought out, it's just wrong, because it doesn't go along with the idea of the REAL truth.

That doesn't mean we go around panting over people, but it's there. People in these jobs make a living out of being attractive- so what of it? Wait one fucking second. YES, the Pentagon WAS hit by an airplane. American Airlines Flight 77, a Boeing 757, was crashed into the west side of the Pentagon at 9:37 a.m. EST. You do a disservice to the memories and the families of the 53 passengers and the 6 crew to suggest otherwise. Witnesses saw the craft actually hit the building. https://www.popularmechanics.com/military/a5659/debunking-911-myths-pentagon/ No, Tower 7 was not hit by a plane. Burning debris from the twin towers struck the building and started numerous fires, which the firefighting system couldn't handle. First responders were already overwhelmed by the disasters of that day and having evacuated the building, realized they couldn't save it and the team was pulled out. There was no way to stop the building's collapse. https://www.popularmechanics.com/military/a6384/debunking-911-myths-world-trade-center/ The 9/11 attack was an Al Qaeda operation from start to finish. And since that day, the planners of the attack have indeed been brought to justice for the most part, one way or another. One of the things I can't forget about 9/11 is learning, in the aftermath, how self-deluding human beings are. The facts stare them straight in the face, yet they insist that there's a "hidden truth". There's no hidden truth. I saw the second plane hit the Tower. I saw the Towers fall live. I will never and can never forget what I saw. And I'll never stop telling the truth that you conspiracy theorists are full of shit.

Natural selection continues regardless. It's only measure is reproductive success and the continuance of the gene in the species. We're largely unconscious of the effect of selection pressure on our reproduction, but it's there. Culture itself is an element in natural selection. It must be, since human culture is a product of our evolution. When our culture values certain standards of attractiveness in a mate, that tends to result in those traits being passed on to future generations. If intelligence is a valued trait, it will tend to be selected by those who value it (even though intelligence is not genetic). Judging by reality TV, though, the trend is in the other direction.
