Paul4747 comments on Apr 9, 2019:
You're stating exactly the opposite conspiracy theory from Noam Chomsky, who thought the Trilaterals wanted to inculcate an excessive trust in politicians and the nation-state, then. The Commission's founding declaration states: "Growing interdependence is a fact of life of the contemporary world. It transcends and influences national systems... While it is important to develop greater cooperation among all the countries of the world, Japan, Western Europe, and North America, in view of their great weight in the world economy and their massive relations with one another, bear a special responsibility for developing effective cooperation, both in their own interests and in those of the rest of the world." "To be effective in meeting common problems, Japan, Western Europe, and North America will have to consult and cooperate more closely, on the basis of equality, to develop and carry out coordinated policies on matters affecting their common interests... refrain from unilateral actions incompatible with their interdependence and from actions detrimental to other regions... [and] take advantage of existing international and regional organizations and further enhance their role." "The Commission hopes to play a creative role as a channel of free exchange of opinions with other countries and regions. Further progress of the developing countries and greater improvement of East-West relations will be a major concern." Pretty sinister stuff. And yes, I'm starting to think there's such a thing as "an excess of democracy". The founders envisioned an educated electorate who would vote intelligently and wisely for representatives who would then govern justly and fairly. What we've got is... a reality show broadcast from the lawn of the White House. I'm starting to wonder if some type of IQ test before being issued a voting card mightn't be so bad after all.

Paul4747 comments on Apr 7, 2019:
In fact it will increase, once they stop aid to the countries these people come from, making their situation even more desperate and giving them more incentive to head for the comparative safety of the USA, where they might be granted asylum. And then, the increased rate of immigration will be evidence to support the need for a border wall. Hmmm. If I didn't know better, I'd think it was some sort of long-term scheme. Luckily, I know Trump is more like Heath Ledger's Joker. He just... *does* things.
"If God has a plan, then why the fuck is everyone praying all the time?"
Paul4747 comments on Apr 7, 2019:
Cognitive dissonance. I actually like the way Stephen King handles his fictional God (he takes part in certain novels). The characters who pray to him to change things are always in the wrong, it's those who accept their fate as part of the plan who turn out to be the heroes. The theme of *Desperation* is, "God is cruel". God sets up the main characters to arrive in the right place to confront something evil, but it's up to them to actually carry through and do it.

The dice were rolled trillions of times, and life may have arisen multiple times before it took hold. But when it did, it was by a natural process.

Oh, never mind then. I'll go back home." I don't imagine I'll ever be involved in any kind of violent incident anywhere, ever, but that's the point; nobody ever does, and when they find themselves in one, it's too late to wish they'd ignored that sign on the door and brought the handgun which they're legally entitled to carry (in my state, anyway). Every time I walk into a hospital, I find myself wondering if today will be that day.

Calling Women "the Office Bunny"
Paul4747 comments on Mar 22, 2019:
It is a pejorative term. It is also, very sadly, still a fact of life. There is, in my workplace (a state prison), an employee who, with zero custody experience, zero experience outside the records office, and a total of three years experience in the Department of Corrections, was put in charge of half a cell block housing 120 prisoners and supervising 6 officers, who had to teach her her job. She had no qualifications whatsoever, except that she needed supervisory experience on her resume and the Warden was willing to oblige her by installing her over a dozen staff who were in line ahead of her. And, how can I put this without offending... she has the looks. Dresses like she's going to the bar even though it's a prison. We were willing to give her the benefit of the doubt, but everything since then backed up the initial perception that she was given the spot as a gift, not because she had any skills or talent. She even helped a corrupt supervisor at a higher level destroy the evidence of his misconduct. (Not that his fellow higher-ups investigated what everyone knew was going on.) Another friend of mine, who is by no means unattractive, has been the "assistant to the warden's assistant" for almost 20 years now, and seen a string of women promoted past her and hired in above her, whom she has had to train to do the job, do the job for them, and get blamed because she didn't do their jobs for them. The current incumbent basically forwards emails from various supervisors to everyone else because she maintains the group email lists, and that's all she does. But she's very good at wearing tight clothes, as was the one before her. And she's great at sitting at a desk while other people do her work. I had never heard that exact phrase you used, but it is still a thing. As long as horny male executives do their thinking with their gonads, and a few unscrupulous women realize they can use this to get what they want, it will probably be a thing. I'm against both behaviors. I'm for people being rewarded for their talents, not their genes.

A closer look at New Zealand's new weapons ban
Paul4747 comments on Mar 21, 2019:
Another word: Culture. 4.79 million New Zealanders compared with 328 million Americans. New Zealand has never had the frontier culture that Americans mythologize. New Zealand is a far more collectivist culture (as is the case with the Commonwealth nations as a whole) and they tend to prioritize "What's best for the nation?" over "How does this affect me?" Another factor: there have never been that many guns in the British Commonwealth nations to begin with. Firearms are seen as a sporting tradition, not as self-defense and not as the means of resisting a potentially hostile or overbearing government (however unrealistic the second case might be in this day and age). Also, there's this thing called "The Second Amendment". Change the Constitution and then the confiscation can begin. Good luck there. You won't believe it from this post, but I'm a lifelong liberal and Democrat. But don't mess with the right of law-abiding gun owners. Instead, enforce the laws and keep guns out of criminal hands. Tighten up background checks and close the loopholes. Don't make gun owners who have obeyed the law all their lives into criminals overnight.

GUN CONTROL: Other countries are giving us the answer by example: [bbc.com]
Paul4747 comments on Mar 21, 2019:
"Other countries" are different from this country. It would be extremely difficult to implement any kind of ban here, given the number of illegal guns that are on the streets. The likely result would be that law-abiding owners would be criminalized for not wanting to part with their property, and criminals would still be armed, to more effectively victimize everyone else. Regardless of the impression you get from the instant news and the fact that everything that happens anywhere is now known to everyone, not just the local populace who it affects directly, gun violence (and all violent crimes) is *down*. It has gone down steadily since a high in the 1980s, went up somewhat in the Bush II years (but never to the record levels we saw), and went down again under Obama. It's not gun violence that's increased, it's media attention. As much as I hate to use an NRA talking point, there are already laws on the books making it illegal for ex-felons, etc. to own a gun. These have to be enforced. And we have to do something the NRA hates: institute background checks for *all* sales, including gun shows and online sales. There's no way to prevent all gun violence. But the approach "other countries" use is not going to fit America.

Paul4747 comments on Mar 12, 2019:
I'll just go along with Project Blue Book and conclude that UFO sightings fall into the following categories: human-created objects or phenomena including aircraft, balloons, satellites, searchlights, and flares; astronomical phenomena, including meteors and meteorites, comets, and stars; atmospheric effects, including clouds and assorted light phenomena; and human psychology, including not only psychological frailty or illness but also fabrication (i.e., hoaxes). And this is from someone who has seen unidentified flying objects... by definition, since I couldn't identify them. My best guess is that someone had released some big candle balloons one night and they happened to pass low over the road I was on. Damn, they looked eerie. Consider that we send exploratory ships and robots to other planets in our solar system. We don't just stop by, hover mysteriously for a few minutes, and leave again. We drop rovers on the surface of Mars and leave landers on the surface of the Moon. Why would any species capable of crossing the horrendous distances between solar systems be either so incompetent as to be seen by humans, if they didn't want to be seen, or so obscure as to simply appear in the sky and then vanish without a trace, leaving no physical evidence? Alien abduction lore is the current variety of demonic possession. The experience itself is brought on by "sleep paralysis", a hypnotic state in which the mind perceives itself to be awake even though it is in fact dreaming. Mysterious figures are a staple of this experience. It can be terrifying, even when it's understood that this experience is what's happening. In medieval times, it was believed that demons or succubi and incubi were responsible. In our scientific age, the paradigm in now aliens. Until alien ships are hovering over the White House, I'll remain dubious.

As far as I can tell, people are supposed to be uptight about their sexuality and not give it up until they have tested the character of their potential partner with shrewd inquiry and ritualistic "come hither/ now go away" games designed to see if that individual will stay for a lifetime. Society looks down on those who feel a mutual attraction, go with that passion, and enjoy their moment. They call them (us?) sluts. They don't see the possibility that people can enjoy the moment and at the same time genuinely care about one another, without having to make a lifetime commitment. The "living and enjoying the moment" is the slut part; the "caring" is the ethical part. A lot of people can't picture how you can be ethical without making a long-term commitment. (Especially religious people.) (Alas, I haven't been lucky enough to have the mutual attraction happen more than a few times, but I have the soul of an ethical slut anyway.)

I've recently started a group with @misterinvisible and it has yet to be approved, or not.
Paul4747 comments on Mar 9, 2019:
I would definitely join that group ?
Who knows what our world would be like if we weren’t such greedy fucking barbarians?

An interesting question given your current profile pic, which I must say is rather on the barbaric side for a ronin.
Two Santa Clauses or How The Republican Party Has Conned America for Thirty Years
Paul4747 comments on Mar 1, 2019:
I'm puzzled how this is news, other than the term "Two Santa Claus" philosophy. Anyone who's been paying attention at all since the 1980s should know how the Republican party doesn't give a tin shit about deficits they run up to pay for tax cuts to the rich and military spending, but scream blue hell over any money for social programs or infrastructure, especially if it's a Democrat administration. The amazing thing is how few people actually pay attention. The only actual story, in my view, is the gullibility of people who think they're in the wealthiest 1/2% of the population, and so have a vested interest in the estate tax; or believe that the tax cuts Republicans pass are actually going to the middle class rather than just looking at the numbers and seeing the truth. Or their inability to look at history and see which party is actually "the party of deficits", despite the rhetoric.
You know, he could burn the flag and his supporters wouldn't be bothered by it one bit.

To keep abortion in todays environment we must get human morality to evolve also.

Let's start by worrying less about the "unborn" and dealing with the problems facing the already born.
Excited about the "Green New Deal?

The source is the Ayn Rand website... pardon my immediate skepticism before I even bother to click a link. And then pardon me for not clicking the link, I need to get ready for work now.
I do not mind the new “Berniecrats.
Paul4747 comments on Feb 26, 2019:
I have a problem with all those who deliberately stayed home or voted as a "protest vote" instead of swallowing their distaste and voting for a candidate that actually would beat the Republicans. People don't understand the electoral college and think it's a popular vote distribution, apparently, when in fact it's winner-take-all for most states. It's not always about voting for the candidate you love, but the one you hate least.
This I agree with 100%.
Paul4747 comments on Feb 23, 2019:
Would that include past supporters of the Irish Republican Army and Ulster Volunteer Force, or are only Muslims terrorists? I would have to know a lot more about the case, but, as an American, I'm incredibly ashamed of *this* president and I'm instinctively inclined to withhold my support until I know a *lot* more about the present decision.
I find this striking:

"Call them what I will..." Your paranoid delusion? I think that is what I will call "them". Or "the Deep Lie". "The Deep Fantasy"? Oo, I like that one. That's going to be the title of my book. I'm copyrighting that one right now, baby.
According to the poll, only about a quarter of Americans — 24 percent — believe there is a ...
Paul4747 comments on Feb 16, 2019:
Ooo, a Fox news poll. That's definitive evidence for Trump that people want a wall. I bet he missed that part of the question where it said "security and humanitarian aid" and just saw the word **"BARRIER"**. Has anyone ever looked up his grades in High School English Comprehension? I'm betting somewhere in the C-/D+ range.
Politics is just coffee table fodder.
Paul4747 comments on Feb 16, 2019:
Not with *that* attitude, you're not. Apathy is what got Trump elected. Democrats who stayed home because they thought the election was sewn up and their vote didn't matter. Or people who thought, "They're all the same, all politicians are liars and crooks, nothing I do will change the system." Well, maybe a vote for Hillary wouldn't have made the system better, but Trump has definitely made it worse. Trump voters wanted "change" and they got it. I hope to hell this is the change they wanted.
My god.
Paul4747 comments on Feb 16, 2019:
Yep, I caught that too. I believe the courts could nullify his "emergency" based on his own admission that it's not actually an emergency. That would save them the trouble of finding a legal basis (although there are several possible avenues to take). Truman tried to nationalize the steel industry and was slapped down. I expect the same here. Whether Trump accepts the decision is another question. He may bring about his own removal from office.
hi i want links to go to the red rome can you help me

I can help you find the Shift key and the punctuation controls on your keyboard. Other than that, I got nothing.
The stock marked jumped up 443 points yesterday.
Paul4747 comments on Feb 16, 2019:
Stock markets rise and fall regardless of politics. The fence won't be built for years, no matter what Trump declares. Lawsuits are already being filed. Bills are already being proposed to overrule his state of emergency. Congress controls the purse strings. It's highly doubtful (in Trump terms, I doubt it bigly) that investors are banking on funding going through any time soon.

Attacks on Reality (as Confirmed by Science)
Paul4747 comments on Feb 16, 2019:
Educate our politicians and school boards about real science. Get the "alternative narratives" out of our classrooms and let them stay in Sunday school, the only place they belong. And get out and vote, let it be KNOWN that you vote, so that politicians won't be terrified of the fundamentalists who want creation taught as an "alternative" to science.
I feel that a majority of the populous is actually devolving. Anyone else share this sentiment?
Paul4747 comments on Feb 16, 2019:

Wow - never thought I'd agree with Ann Coulter.
