@jlynn37 What does John Woo have to do with it? And my answer to your question would be that I have exposure to and experience with the mentality of those who are not going to follow the laws, no matter what they are. Felons don't play by the rules. Banning handguns would result in honest people turning their guns in, and criminals keeping theirs. This is predictable. Part two of my answer is that I know the type of training people need to have, minimum, in order to carry a handgun, or any gun. Knowing which situations call for the use of force and which don't. Knowing when to retreat (99.99 percent of the time) and when to defend yourself. Knowing not to go into a suspicious situation in the first place, which would prevent the majority of incidents. Being alert to the people around you; if they're watching you, how they act, how they talk. Being justifiably cautious, but not afraid. Not everyone that wants to carry a gun, should carry one. Training standards need to be tighter. I know this and I advocate for it. That's what being a law enforcement officer has to do with it.

Paul4747 replies on Jul 5, 2018:
@Beach_slim I would love to debate you, but your base assumptions are all wrong. 1) You conflate communist, liberal, and progressive, showing that you know little about any of the above. 2) You try to poison the well by using words like "thief", "steal" and "lazy". 3) The causes of economic inequality are factors like market demand, education, gender, technological growth leaving low-skilled workers behind, and concentration of wealth into the upper echelons of a society over generations. 4) Please find me a single liberal who voted to raise taxes on the working class; by the actual definition of a tax increase, not the phony definition of "voted against a tax cut" or "voted for a smaller tax cut when a bigger tax cut was available". 5) I suspect we will even disagree on who constitutes the working class. Cambridge Dictionary defines working class as "the group of people in society who use physical skills in their jobs and are usually paid by the hour". Trump's voters tended to be white and earn $50,000 to $100,000 a year. These are not "working class", they're middle class and above the median wage. And under the Republican tax plan, those households got an $870 tax cut (1.6%); while households making over $1 million got over $69,000, or 3.3%. (But the working class will be paying for those tax cuts for decades...) So explain how conservatives are looking out for the working class, and not the rich. Maybe, if you're getting the same answers from everybody, it's because those are the facts.
Dear diary.

Paul4747 replies on Jul 5, 2018:
I don't know much about you, B_s, but from the context of your remark, I take it you're a conservative. So I'm going to share something I've noticed about conservatives on a lot of social-type sites. It seems when a lot of people are disagreeing with them, by holding a liberal opinion, conservatives ascribe that to a herd mentality; yet when they agree with them, conservatives say that's a sign of intelligence. So can you tell me, why can't conservatives see a liberal opinion, without insulting the person holding it? Wouldn't you be better served debating the opinion rather than insulting the person?

Roy Moore himself said he "didn't remember ever dating a girl without the permission of her mother." That suggests to me that he's a man who prefers "girls" over actual grown women. That's not proof of a crime but it certainly goes to his character, and I for one am disgusted with his character. This is "10 Commandments on a granite monument in the courthouse" Roy Moore. I don't see any reason we should stop now. Of course we have a nation of laws, and there's a process to follow... but we're also a just nation. I mean that in the broadest sense. It's not justice to separate children from parents or expel people back to face probable torture and death. Better still, it's not right. I'm not sure where the stereotype came from that immigrants are flooding us looking for a free ride. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate of foreign-born people in the U.S. was 4.1% last year, down from 2016, and right in line with everyone else. Every American has ancestors from somewhere else. Every single one. Even if they came here before there was an "America".

Because he had no chance in the first place, it was a vanity campaign. A principled stand. But the Republican party leadership has no principles. The only hope for the middle left is coalition politics. Grit your teeth and vote for Hilary, no matter what you read. And I have no clue what "war crimes" you're talking about, by the way. But my point is, the left and center breaking apart is exactly the problem, every election. You can't get a pure and clean candidate to the presidency. Carter made it, and he was a failure. Who Loves President Trump?
doug6352 comments on Jun 23, 2018:
I admire the job Trump has been doing as President, as would any honest rational American. I think he's accelerating his peacemaking efforts in the Middle East now, and I hope that goes as well as his efforts with North Korea.
Paul4747 replies on Jun 23, 2018:
@doug6352 Here's the thing: "Peacemaking efforts in the Middle East" have been to support one side exclusively, endorse Israel in all of its claims, effectively torpedo the two-state solution, and most recently withdraw from the nuclear agreement with Iran. Sanctions aren't going to stop Iran from enriching uranium. The sole recourse would be military action, in other words, another Middle East war. And in North Korea, he declared a dictator with the worst human rights record in the world "someone I can trust", and canceled our joint exercise with our South Korean allies, in return for nothing at all. And then flip flopped and declared the North is still a threat after all. As for our economy, Trump is still riding the wave that built up under 8 years of Obama... who spent his first term fixing the damage Bush II did. *OF FRAKKING COURSE* I want our nation to succeed, and it's offensive that you suggest otherwise. I simply recognize that the current occupant is going to do inconceivable harm before his not-a-moment-too-soon departure. Wall Street will do alright from him, but if you think he gives a crap about Main Street, you're shrooming.

@HippieChick58 Okay, in retrospect, bowling was not my best example. Although, if I met someone who found me so attractive that she wanted to go "bowling" on the first date, well, if it there was an instant, mutual, emotional connection, then OK, just maybe. Although it's never happened before and I can't picture it happening now. I know that I was socialized one way, and then I socialized myself a different way when I grew older. I was socialized by my parents to think that different "races" were different, and white was best. I was socialized that men are supposed to want sex more than women, and women are supposed to resist our bestial advances. In fact, women aren't supposed to want it at all. And that it was all Eve's fault, somehow or another. But as I started thinking for myself, and reading books my folks had never heard of, I learned that people are people no matter what, and men and women largely want the same things, and there's nothing wrong with having a sex drive... in fact, it's how we evolved. It's a great thing. It's a gift. So I don't think of anyone as whores, or else men and women are whores equally- if that definition means wanting and enjoying a sex life.

Can I ask you, then... as a man, when I list "sex" in the category of things that I enjoy, does that make you think of me as cheap and easy, or available for FWB? I mean, I think I also may have listed "bowling", but I don't just go out bowling with people I barely know... What it boils down to, for me, is that I'm not looking for an instant sex relationship with anyone, and I don't assume that anyone else is. But I do feel that someone who lists that as an interest is being open just as I am, in the belief that it is part of a healthy relationship, and hoping to have something in the future.

@EricHunt See, and this is why I said "not true for everyone". I also didn't mean to imply it was true for me either, that love follows sex. In my case they pretty much go hand in hand, I show emotional attachment through physical expression, and sex is the ultimate expression of that. That's where I truly would apply the phrase "making love" as opposed to just "sex". I don't have an occasion where I've had "just sex", there was always emotional involvement, even if we tried to pretend there wasn't and it was just for fun.

@TheMiddleWay In the case of someone carrying a gun, this is a concrete, testable example. I can believe someone is or is not armed, up until the point I search that person. After that, I can state with certainty "He has a gun" or "He does not have a gun". In the case of a supernatural being, there's no test. Nobody can ever state "There is no god" (not with intellectual honesty) because a god may exist in a form we can't detect or recognize. (They also can't state "God exists", at least not until objective proof is produced.) Your use of concrete analogies for the existence of a supernatural being don't apply.
