Tree-hugging tendencies (my top concern), atheist, antitheist, existentialist, humanist, not spiritual at all, skeptic, rather introvert, non-woke socialist or anarchist (depending on my mood), generation X, Quebec-separatist, reluctant suburban, bicycle commuter, soccer and hockey player, cat person.

I speak French, English and a little Spanish. Former graphic artist, now working in the recycling business. I used to print crap, now I recycle it!

By the way, my username, QuidamOutrepont, means "Some guy across the bridge". I live in the suburbs of Montreal, on the south side of the Saint Lawrence river, across the Jacques-Cartier bridge.

Recycling sorter from Quebec here. From my humble point of view, I think the recycling business is a place where noble environmental principals clashes head to head with the cold reality of globalized capitalism. On one side, you have product makers that don't want to pay for the recycling of their packages. On the other, you have governments that are not taking this issue seriously, that don't have the will to solve it.

I think that post you wrote is a good first step. You spoke out. You put your emotions into words. I suggest you keep at it. Find someone to talk to. Someone you trust, or someone who might have a complete outsider view on what you're going through. Keep letting that steam out. Sure the universe is chaotic and goes from the infinitely big to the infinitely small. The infinitely ugly to the infinitely beautiful. The infinitely cruel to the infinitely kind. Just look at it at your own human scale. I think the future is a blank page. Nothing is written and decided in advance. Pay attention to what gives you regrets, what makes you loose your hopes. Find some allies, people who think and feel like you do and find out what's the next step you can take.

Curious if anyone here has ever downsized their job, or turned down a promotion etc.
QuidamOutrepont comments on Jul 24, 2019:
At my job, they offered me to become a team manager and I refused. Way too much trouble for not much of a rise. Of course, one down side of not getting promoted is that someone else will, some one that might be annoying to you. And recently my girlfriend was having a real hard time at her job, getting often criticized by her bosses, having that constant impression to be clinging to her job only by the skin of her teeth. They offered her a demotion that comes with a 20% salary cut but that also allowed her to keep her seniority and her social benefits. She accepted it. She's feeling quite relieved now.

Cambodia to send plastic waste back to the US and Canada - CNN
QuidamOutrepont comments on Jul 19, 2019:
I work in the recycling business. I'm a sorter in a recycling plant. I'm one of those folks putting on those gloves, standing next to a conveyor and actually sorting the stuff with both hands. And from a humble sorter's point of view, I think there are so many things going wrong in this business. For starters, we find way too much trash on our conveyors. Either people don't know how to sort their recycling from their trash properly, or they just don't care. Green truck or gray truck, as long as the stuff leaves with a truck, what's the difference?! I also hear on the TV news that too many recyclable stuff ends up on dumping grounds. There are too many packages that are difficult or impossible to recycle. Just think about those Pringle's chips packages, wax cardboard sides and tin bottoms. We don't have time to split them apart. I think it could be possible to improve our recycling rates big time, it would only take more political will from our governments. As for the corporations, those who put the merchandise and the packaging in our markets, it looks to me like another classic case of privatizing the profits and socializing the losses. They just cash in the profits and let the governments, the tax payers and the environment pay for the waste. As for the recycling business itself, I think this is where the noble principles of preserving our environment go on a frontal collision with the harsh reality of cold blooded and globalized capitalism. Why should they sort their material here when the could have it sorted by some overseas cheap labor?! I work in a plant where too much stuff passes on way too fast, sorted by not enough sorters on machines that are not maintained and cleaned up properly. I see poorly sorted, contaminated material being baled up, piled up in containers and sent who knows where. I hear on the news some local buyers saying they would take all of our material if it was properly sorted. And I also hear about some shady brokers buying up our material and shipping it overseas. I think my job is important, but it could be soooo much better.
What were you doing on July 20, 1969?
