EDITORIAL Canadian politicians who flirt with populism are playing with fire PUBLISHED 17 HOURS ...
QuidamOutrepont comments on May 21, 2019:
In Quebec, I don't think our Prime Minister François Legault is as much of a populist than others, but I think he seems to enjoy walking in blurry zones. Our new Prime Minister got elected last october with quite a blurry mandate with a brand new party, the Coalition Avenir Quebec, breaking up a 50-year Liberals-PQ duality. It seems to me that people were tired of Philippe Couillard's worn up and corrupt Liberals regime and were not in the mood to give the separatists Parti Québécois another shot. People apparently went for a third way and I wonder if they really understood what it's all about. As if it was more of an anti-liberal and anti-PQ vote than a pro-Legault vote. Quite a blurry mandate to my humble opinion because Legault's CAQ have a rather conservative profile without having any direct ties with any tories. They often say they want to axe down on red tape but they seem to have a hard time putting their will into action. In the federalist-separatist axis, they try to stand in a very improbable half-way position, with a luke-warm not-quite-federalist-not-quite-separatist-either-but-rather-nationalist line. They're the ones proposing the famous controversial bill 21 on state secularism, banning the display of any religious signs by some government employee. As for environment policies, Legault is not really an openly climate crisis denier but he doesn't have much of a plan to fight climate change either. He seems to have a light slant towards fossil fuels and a love-and-hate relationship with Alberta oil. One one hand, Legault said that Alberta oil is dirty oil and refuses to let Albertan oil pipelines go through Quebec territory. And on the other hand, it's a fact that we now get most of our oil from Alberta and he seems to prefer expanding highways than public transportation. His party seems to get more votes from SUVs and pick-up truck driving ridings. The joke is that Legault has a reputation to often say "On verra", "We'll see"...
Scheer hypocrisy.

QuidamOutrepont comments on May 21, 2019:
That guy has a very shallow sex life. He's way too much into his dick and not enough into his mind and into his heart. He should know that the number one erogenous spot in our bodies is the brain. And when the brain and the moods are well turned on, the rest of the body can be in for a hell of a ride. Like George Brassens said in his song, "Si elle n'a pas le coeur qui bat, le corps non plus ne bronche pas." If her heart is not beating, the body won't bulge either.

QuidamOutrepont comments on May 10, 2019:
Climate change is definitely an issue in Quebec. The Montreal area is now going through some 100-year floods for the second time in three years. Many costal areas like the North Shore, Gaspesia and the Magdelene Islands are strongly hit by rising sea levels, land slides and coast erosion. Unfortunately, that doesn't seems to worry many Quebecers who elected a right-wing government at the provincial legislature last fall. They keep delaying public transit expansion, urban sprawling is still in full swing, they keep on building highways, SUVs sales are still soaring. I think Quebecers are pretty much divided on the issue.

QuidamOutrepont comments on May 9, 2019:
Of course a lot of things are going wrong in the Western world and the rest of the world as well nowadays. But I don't think the answers to the world's problems can be found in the past. I don't think that beating and dragging women back down to the ways of the so-called good old days will solve anything. If you feel hurt as a man, if you feel like you need to be dominant in front of women and in front of the rest of the world to be a real man, maybe your vision of manhood is too narrow or outdated.

QuidamOutrepont comments on May 8, 2019:
To add years to life is one thing. To add life to years is another. I guess it's a matter of overall quality of life, physical and emotional, rather than a matter of numbers. Some kind of medically assisted life termination, was recently legalized in Quebec, under some very specific rules. The person must be in some very unbearable and hopeless medical condition. The father of my sister in law chose to go through that procedure. Eventhough if was a very emotional moment to live, so to say, for family and friends, everyone thought it was the right thing to do. He even volunteered to give away some of his organs that were still usable. So all the transplant staff was ready at the date and time chosen for the "procedure".
When is it okay to say "I love you"?
QuidamOutrepont comments on May 8, 2019:
I wonder if saying "I love you" too early is a lack of empathy. If wonder if the right timing to say it is when you mean it AND you get enough signs from the other person that the feeling goes both ways. They say that time has no respect for what's done without it.

What do you think about banning religious symbols in Quebec?
QuidamOutrepont comments on Apr 1, 2019:
It's not hate, it's not discrimination. It's mistakes from the past we don't want to make again. If you think Quebec is a white Christian state now, you should have seen us about sixty years ago when we were like a reclusive Islamic state. Our history books call that era the "grande noirceur", the great darkness. An era that was followed by the "révolution tranquille" where our schools, our health system and our political institutions were taken off the hands of the catholic church and into those of the secular society. And bill 21 on state secularism is in straight line with this ongoing process. There are many jobs that comes with a dress code. I think people from all races and religions are welcome to work for our government. They just have to leave their religious stuff home. I can't believe I have to say this on Agnostic.com! I think Canada is far more racist that Quebec. If you Canadians call us racists, it's just that we are actually resisting to your racism, your orangist WASP-supremacist feeling of misplaced superiority that seems to entitle you to bash us mercilessly all day long. That, and the fact that we don't fall for your phony multiculturalism that actually looks more to me like an unofficial cast system and an hypocrite melting pot.
What do you think about banning religious symbols in Quebec?
QuidamOutrepont comments on Apr 1, 2019:
I'm a Quebecer, I didn't vote for the party of Prime Minister François Legault last october. But I think his bill 21 about state secularism is definitely a good thing, a way to achieve a better separation between religions and the government. I think it's not much more than a dress code for some government workers while they're on duty. To ensure everybody's religious freedom, the state must be neutral. https://montrealgazette.com/news/quebec/premier-legault-to-address-quebecers-on-secularism-sunday-at-530-p-m

As far as I know, one controversial issue in Canada that's creating some very fierce debate and lots of tension between the provinces is the albertan tar sands. Some people want to expand the oil production and build more pipelines to sell it abroad. Some other people want to slow down or even shut down the whole thing to fight climate change. There's also the Quebec separatist movement dividing the Quebecers and bringing some resentment elsewhere in Canada. Hard to tell what will happen in the federal elections next fall.
