The "Mansfield Safety Bar" was not only required for all trucks as a result of her and her driver and husband's horrible death by hitting a slowed truck in '67 but was obviously named in her honor. In 1967, Mansfield was in Biloxi, Mississippi, for an engagement at the Gus Stevens Supper Club. After two appearances on the evening of June 28, Mansfield, Sam Brody (her attorney and companion), their driver Ronnie Harrison (age 20), and three of her children— Miklós, Zoltán, and Mariska—left Biloxi after midnight in a 1966 Buick Electra 225. Their destination was New Orleans, where Mansfield was to appear on WDSU's Midday Show the next day. At about 2:25 a.m., on U.S. Highway 90 west of the Rigolets Bridge, the Buick crashed at high speed into the rear of a tractor-trailer that had slowed behind a truck spraying mosquito fogger shrouded in an insecticide fog. The three adults in the front seat died instantly. The children, asleep in the rear seat, survived with minor injuries. Reports that Mansfield was decapitated are untrue, although she suffered severe head trauma. This urban legend started with the appearance in police photographs of a crashed car with its top virtually sheared off, and what resembled a blonde-haired head tangled in the car's smashed windshield. However, the blonde object was a wig Mansfield was wearing, and possibly parts of her real hair and scalp. Her death certificate stated that the immediate cause of death was a "crushed skull with avulsion of cranium and brain". After her death, the NHTSA recommended requiring an under-ride guard (a strong bar made of steel tubing) on all tractor-trailers; the trucking industry was slow to adopt this change. In America the under-ride guard is sometimes known as a "Mansfield bar", or an "ICC bumper" The death car was saved by a private collector in Florida, where it became a roadside attraction in the 1970s. As of 2019, the car is owned by Scott Michaels and is housed and shown at his Dearly Departed Tours & Artifact Museum in Los Angeles across from Hollywood Forever Cemetery. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jayne_Mansfield

Robecology comments on Feb 7, 2019:
#1. Don't keep junk food around. Easy if you live alone, tough if you have a family. #2. Don't kick nor punish yourself for "cravings"...they're actually addictions created before you could walk and talk. I'm not blaming parents here; we all did the best we could...but there needs to be more awareness of when cravings are created, and how to make the cravings for healthier food important for parenting. #3. What you're doing....talking about it....is a big first step. Kudos on that #4. Let Hunger be your friend. Do some research; don't believe me; but it's been my discovery that all animals who go "hungry" or experience "hunger" every day live longer. It's not so much the thin-ness of these people, it's their tolerance for hunger. We've become afraid of hunger. Let it be your friend. Try to feel "hungry" even if just for s short time every day. Don't believe me; check this out. The sensation of hunger is instinctual. For many people, the first twinge of hunger sends them searching for food, often before they need to eat. Feeling hungry at the start of a meal is good, but eating every time you feel hungry can result in overeating. .. https://www.sharecare.com/health/healthy-eating.../why-eat-healthy-food-hungry

I understand your frustration. As a short man who's often attracted to voluptuous women...it's been a problem for me. And we men are in love with curvy...and even "voluptuous"...but we fear/loathe "obesity". I've seen this happen to at least 2 partners. They go from - as you suggested - curvy to - voluptuous to - dare I say it...fat. I've kept close to ideal weight...so I have to be honest here....the weight gain is a simple turn-off. Yet women of the past are always a little more appealing to most men if they are, in fact, slightly overweight. The catchword is "slightly". But here's the catch. Obesity is a world-wide disease that's growing rapidly (See the link) -and it's not your fault. Doting parents set you up - quite innocently, really, to overeat. Before you could walk and talk; when you were upset food was put in your mouth. So the challenge is to break habits that are deeply ingrained in us. The trick is to do two things... 1. Tolerate hunger...especially at bedtime 2. Get moving - make sweating a daily habit. You'll be "struck by lightning" more often if you lose the weight. Good luck. http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/map_of_the_week/2013/04/obesity_in_america_cdc_releases_gif_of_epidemic_over_time.html

I'm a retired (45 year) science and heath teacher. I taught Environmental science/Ecology mostly. I loved teaching health; got certified to do so with a battery of tests in NY state that, back in the 70's gave me the equivalent of permanent health teacher status. (It was the same as a Registered nurse's degree test). I got the first Earth day going in the 1970's at a local M.S.; and have been teaching, practicing and preaching ecology for decades. Was honored to be part of the 1971 group of 40 (out of 800 applicants) to study the Population Explosion with Dr, Carl Huether, and other important folk in the field, Now I'm a Tesla owner (just bought my second one a few days ago) and swear by the car's ecology. So I welocme the discussion. Dinosaurs lived without ever seeing snow; so can we survive? The question is - will the parabolic rise in CO2 make it a runaway change that will kill even our food crops in a few decades? BTW; it's not just fossil fuels. We have to nip our runaway population growth soon, as well. We can't wait for the gradual tapering off at the end of this century, as forecast. To survive as a species we need to fix this....yesterday. We can't keep dragging our feet. Here's a great website to explore. But to be fair, let's reverse the question. Is it too much for one woman to be satisfied with one man? The answer to both is...yes...it is too much to expect a man or a woman to be satisfied in a monogamous relationship for many decades. That's why long-term relationships are becoming rare, and divorces are over 50% after 7 years.

BTW; did you know why the date was chosen? It was the day that St. V was buried! HMMMMMM! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Valentine

Yes indeed! There's plenty of low/slow growing plants that you can put in instead of the typical "grass" lawns. Do explore them and keep us posted!

Robecology comments on Oct 8, 2019:
Indeed!. I love Elen. I'm a regular participant on many conservative and pro-Trump FB pages....because I don't name-call...because I try to gently present the facts. Are the Conservative-pro-Trump crowd tough? Definitely. But they're still decent people. Many are either naive, or uninformed, or undereducated...and to those who start name-calling it tells me I've pressed too many of their buttons and just need to leave them alone...or in some cases...block them...especially when they "attack" or "get personal". But a few are genuinely disappointed in DJT...and want to change. Just remember; the Trump supporter has their backs against the wall. They're like cornered rats....they will be defensive, they will lash out and try to counter with your alleged "attacks"...so be nice...be empathetic. I often share this...a very empathetically done story of the weird behavior of a pro-Trump American. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rW9R6jgE7SQ

Arthur C. Clarke wrote the very prophetic Space Odessey series; If you think 2001 was good, do consider reading 2010....in which he predicts (via fiction) landing on one of Saturn's moons and discovering life below the ice there. They've since alleged that this is true (although Clarke's life form was monstrous.).
The true "oranges" of Jefferson Airplane, a little-known historical fact....
Robecology comments on Jul 6, 2019:
Cute...but here's the real story; The facts on the origin of the band's name are disputed. One argument is that Jefferson Airplane got its name from the mythical blues player Blind Thomas Jefferson Airplane. Of course, there was never such a person, but the name was intended as a joke on Balin's good friend, Blind Lemon Jefferson. https://aaep1600.osu.edu/book/09_JeffAirplane.php

How did you come to be atheist, agnostic, etc.?
Robecology comments on Jun 17, 2019:
Raised by an Episcopal father and a non-practicing jewish mother...I went through all the rituals...Sunday school, confirmation, even got married (when I was 21) in an Episcopal church....but that faded away as I got older. Going for science as a major had a lot to do with it. Reading "Sermons in Stone" by Richard Ordway (a teacher at SUNY New Paltz, a college/home town I'll be driving to soon) was the turning point. BTW; I'll be staying near you, in Wyetheville WVa, this coming Wednesday night (June 19th). If you'd like to get together for dinner (on me) let me know...there's a nice Chinese restaurant (simply called Peking) in town right near the Tesla supercharger....if I get in around dinner time (ETA 8 PM) I'm dining there. Message me if you're interested!

Ugh...the worst part of taking my Tesla on road trips was/is the coffee stops. I'm spoiled by home brew..half decaf, flavored and fresh ground.
