I evolved from light and sweet...to black and splenda/sucralose. The pure sugar gives me a sugar high, then a crash....the sucralose....doesn't do that.
Robecology replies on Mar 10, 2020:
@BBJong Indeed....but I do think Sucralose is chemically derived from cane sugar - so in addition to needing large tracts of swampy fresh-water areas, the Cane sugar fields that occupy a lot of the Everglades and receive government subsidies have been a sore point in Florida politics for decades. America could get sugar from many tropical isles, including Cuba and Puerto Rico...but it choses to subsidize the more costly American made (here in the Everglades) sugar. Sucralose and Environmental Safety As part of the safety assessment of sucralose, a number of environmental studies were undertaken in order to ensure that sucralose has no adverse impact on the environment. The environmental studies clearly demonstrated that sucralose is not harmful to plants or wildlife and does not bioaccumulate. Moreover, sucralose does not interfere with the sewage treatment process. Sucralose is inherently biodegradable. In soil, sucralose breaks down to salt, water and carbon dioxide. For more, the Calorie Control Council sat down with Duane Huggett, PhD for a Question and Answer session. https://sucralose.org/sucralose-facts/

@joeymf86 If you read the whole article you see that the reason that there’s a slow of plastic ocean pollution while the production has quadrupled....it has a lot to do with several steps the plastic makers have made; 1. Using less; you may notice the water bottles today are flimsier....they crush more quickly; because they’re thinner...made with less plastic 2. Increasing biodegradability; This is being done mainly by conscientious plastic makers...most don’t car 3.Recycling efforts are picking up. More communities are going through all wastes and pulling out the recyclable materials...hence less ends up in landfills or in ocean dumps. 4. Landfilling has increased. @rsb97080 Another myth. The most recent charge I experienced was $0.28 cents per Kwh... at the Supercharger. that's 3.5 miles. Multiply that and you get $2.80 for 35 miles. A gallon costs around that; and not too many cars get 35 miles on that gallon...so it's still a better value than most gas cars...and much less pollution (not to mention far safer, much faster). BTW; my costs per kWh for charging at home - here in Ft. Pierce, Florida is around $0.15 cents a kWh....that's $1.50 for 35 miles; The national average is $0.1319 cents per kWh. The average electricity rate nationwide - is 13.19 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh). The average price a residential customer in the United States pays for electricity is 13.31 cents per kWh. 95% of EV's charge at home. https://www.tesla.com/support/supercharging

@Leontion I also found this - since you live in Alabama this might interest you; How to buy a Tesla in Alabama Posted on January 9, 2019 Alabama does not allow Tesla to sell its cars direct to consumers in its state. But there are people in Alabama who drive Teslas. How did they do that? Like other Tesla owners, Alabama residents can place their order online. Tesla will FedEx the paperwork needed ahead of time. Then, Alabama residents will be likely directed to Atlanta-Decatur or Nashville or even Houston for pickup, depending where they live in the state. Tesla does offer home delivery for buyers who live 160 miles away from a delivery center. Taxes, registering For those who pick up in Atlanta (the more common locale), there are no taxes or fees collected in Georgia. Alabama residents pay it all in their home state. They must sign a ST-8 form to claim exemption from the Georgia title and ad valorem taxes. Alabama residents have to title the cars themselves. They’ll need a Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin, which is issued by Tesla HQ, post-sale and mailed to the lien-holder. Alabama charges a flat rate of 2 percent of vehicle purchases, plus an additional city and county sales tax so it varies depending on where the buyer lives.

@Leontion I'm retired; have been since 2012; and it's the retirement package (for D.R.O.P. participants in Florida that postpone their retirement 5 years...as I did) that led me to buy - for cash - my first Tesla in 2013. I did have issues with the battery (partially my fault - I recharged it to max capacity against "suggestions) but they replaced it - twice - for free. So if/when you retire - I'm guessing you'll still need a car...and will probably enjoy an EV. If you want to park it "far away" from any danger...park it "far away" from any gasoline fueled cars. - - - - - - I looked up the data on fires and overheating with batteries...and found this; Tesla claims that gasoline powered cars are about 11 times more likely to catch fire than a Tesla. It says the best comparison is fires per 1 billion miles driven. It said that the 300,000 Teslas on the road have been driven a total of 7.5 billion miles, and about 40 fires have been reported. That works out to five fires for every billion miles traveled, compared to a rate of 55 fires per billion miles traveled in gasoline cars." https://money.cnn.com/2018/05/17/news/companies/electric-car-fire-risk/index.html ...and remember; there's no 'explosive" - nor even "flammable" - fuel used in EV's. ...and there's another argument about "rare earth - Cobalt" being used in EV batteries...and you'll never guess who's taking the lead in getting away from mining that might involve child-labor abuse; https://cleantechnica.com/2018/06/17/teslas-cobalt-usage-to-drop-from-3-today-to-0-elon-commits/

@DotLewis You're doing a lot more "do-it-yourself" than most of us your age/our age...so be content in knowing that you're still taking on the projects that too many of us "hire an expert" to do.

What's your fears about owning an all-electric vehicle?
Robecology replies on Feb 17, 2020:
@Leontion And used batteries are actually more recyclable than most gasoline cars...95% recyclable VS 80% recyclable total parts on gas powered cars; https://insideevs.com/news/342366/myth-busted-battery-recycling-is-already-feasible/

Robecology replies on Feb 17, 2020:
@Leontion Thanks for bringing up another "myth". Gasoline cars are 11 times more likely to explode or catch fire.... yep...1,100% more likely. Not twice as much or 50% more...1,100% more. Yes - a few have "ignited".or caught fire...but that was due to weird combination of excessive heat, no air circulation, and hard driving suddenly stopped. The number - compared to the number that DON'T explode or catch fire....is 11 times less than the ratio of gas cars to gas car fires and explosions. Again....it's a myth to fear the battery explosion thing. Here's the data on that. https://auto.howstuffworks.com/myths-electic-cars-vehicles11.htm

@bleurowz Pre owned may be wise. I think they "stole" my 2013 for a $27k trade in. There's early S's available for around $20K..with totally refreshed batteries. Test drive one...it's free....you'll be hooked. Go without your credit card or checkbook....fair warning! https://www.tesla.com/drive

Robecology replies on Feb 16, 2020:
@bleurowz ..- they're coming down in price - and expanding in color choices. 12 years ago, the Tesla Roadster was $180K. 9 years ago, the S was around $100K. 6 years ago the X came out for $70K. two years ago the III and the Y came out in the $40K range. Make a graph of that; you'll see that it won't be long before we see a budget/basic EV in the $20K range. In the shareholders meeting Elon hinted a compact/subcompact model might come in the future. "It will have reduced weight, so greater efficiency, it could get 5.25 miles per kWh. It might get by with a 40 kWh battery. That could mean a 25K base price." https://forums.tesla.com/forum/forums/should-tesla-make-compactsub-compact-car So the trend is downward in costs, upwards in variety.

@bleurowz and @DavidDuhon Tesla is adding a charging station per week, and Walmart is building EV charging at most of their stores. VW is working on producing mobile chargers for stranded EV motorists; Battery replacement was actually tested to do "on-the-spot" in a couple of places in California; but with neutral/not-worth-it results. And of course; by the time your car needs a new battery - you're also ready to trade up. Let the EV companies worry about replacing batteries. Finally; there's even talk of "million mile batteries" that have a much longer rechargeability. https://www.wired.com/story/tesla-may-soon-have-a-battery-that-can-last-a-million-miles/ https://www.motor1.com/news/389830/vw-mobile-ev-recharge-robot/ https://www.tesla.com/trips
