Robecology comments on Nov 14, 2019:
It has to do with how we were brought up. We agnostic/atheists often come from religious families. We've been "brainwashed" to use God in our commentary. It's just a habit. If you're educated and enlightened...just accept that old habits die hard...it doesn't suggest that you're falling back in to your "religulousness"
I think this is a lovely overview, much more interesting than it sounds. [youtube.com]
Robecology comments on Nov 14, 2019:
More than a "lovely" overview (I get it....you're a romantic) It's an important one. I volunteer for a botanical garden....and it's a common unawareness... that many make about plants...that they too, went through an evolution...only many of the "dinosaurs" of the plant world...the Cycads, the Ferns, the Bromeliads, the palm trees, etc....are still on earth...and still abundant in some regions. True; the "tree-fern" that was extensive 300-500 million years ago (and made most of our coal) is rare today...but it does still exist. I didn't hear this emphasized...so allow me; 99% of our Oxygen was NOT given to us by the Plants....it was the Pre-plants...the photosynthetic single celled organisms...that changed the sea from iron-green to blue (as Oxygen built up and then iron oxides settled to the bottom) and that built up our oxygen enough so that Ozone - 03 - the protective layer 10--15 miles up - that allowed plant and animal life on land to evolve. Don't thank a tree....thank a phytoplankton. This is planet ocean, not planet earth Good video. Thanks!

Good synopsis, CB...!! I'm a Democrat, and I want Trump gone...but... The Republicans aren't intentionally lying. It's their "truth". They're suffering s serious mass-delusion. They look at the attacks on Trump as the attack on the rich and successful. We must be careful not to let their clever "alternative truths" win us over...and win over the nation. If they win....and that's a strong possibility - then fossil fuel wealth(note the chart...US and Russia pay the lowest fuel taxes)will remain strong. Environmental protection will fade. Education for the elite will flourish...education for the masses will suffer. Worst case scenario...we could suffer extinction as our environment heats up out of control....too fast to shift crops northward...and disease vectors (flies, etc) will finish the destruction. This is a crucial time to wake up our fellow Americans...not bash them. They're suffering severe delusions...like the #Religulous, they don't see what's wrong. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rW9R6jgE7SQ

There's a rash of fruit-based brews out there...from Raspberry, to Coconut, to Mango...and it's working. Microbreweries are springing up all over the place with tasty beers that have a unique flavor. They are still relatively bitter (I found that a Mango brew needed a touch of sugar or honey - but that's me)...and still brewed with hops and malt...and the low alcohol gives you a mild buzz, as well.

Robecology comments on Nov 13, 2019:
The only fault I find with your comment is "the NEW front line of the anti-abortion movement. The Religulous value male dominance. They value a man deciding when a family should start. They value a woman keeping a secondary, almost slave-like roll in a relationship. This has been their tradition for centuries. Most religious families have children when the father decides the time is right...in other words...when he has "raped" his mate....and captured her... gotten her to "the alter"....this is the religious way of family creation.

“Bribery, first of all, as the founders understood bribery, it was not as we understand it in law today. It was much broader,” Schiff said. “It connoted the breach of the public trust in a way where you’re offering official acts for some personal or political reason, not in the nation’s interest.” To prove bribery, Schiff said, you have to show that the president was “soliciting something of value,” which Schiff thinks multiple witnesses before his committee have testified to in private.

A million every 4.5 days. 83 million more - births than deaths...per year. ...and that rate's been slowing since it peaked in the 1980's. But at this slow rate decline, we won't reach ZPG until the end of this century; when we're likely to peak at between10 and 11 billion. The price is $7.99 (compared to half that for real beef) so as usual,, vegan/veggie folk will have to pay a premium to avoid meat....but kudos to Burger King for getting nationals production of a meat substitute off the ground. I've substantially reduced my beef/pork/lamb intake...and I know that 10-20% of the animal production for meat is adding methane to the environment - which is 20X more potent than CO2...so the more we boycott meat eating the better for our own personal health as well as our environment's

I think he got arrested for trying to run against Putin? After Kasparov retired, he devoted his time to politics and writing. He formed the United Civil Front movement, and joined as a member of The Other Russia, a coalition opposing the administration and policies of Vladimir Putin. In 2008, he announced an intention to run as a candidate in that year's Russian presidential race, but failure to find a sufficiently large rental space to assemble the number of supporters that is legally required to endorse such a candidacy led him to withdraw. Kasparov blamed "official obstruction" for the lack of available space. Although he is widely regarded in the West as a symbol of opposition to Putin, he was barred from the presidential ballot, as the political climate in Russia makes it difficult for opposition candidates to organize. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garry_Kasparov

Not clear about what we're voting about. Let me leave you with this educational video on how we're already a Socialist nation...and that doesn't inhiibit capitolism one bit. As I've often said..greed is a "Perfect addiction"....but it could spell death for America... http://robecology.blogspot.com/2016/12/greed-perfect-addiction-and-one-factor.html?q=ffc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4rr9Lcx_dQ

I attended a speech, and got a signed copy of Richard Leakey's "Origins, Reconsidered". My point is this; a good scientist wants to be proven wrong. (S)he welcomes new evidence which disputes their original theories. Even Leakey wrote a book about it.

She has a good point. I love Sanders and Warren. But it's clear that their views are not accepted by the right, nor the centrists. ...and if we don't get overwhelming voter turnout showing intense solidarity for a democratic candidate, then Trump will win. https://www.knoe.com/content/news/Moodys-forecast-Trump-will-win-2020-election-in-landslide-563403421.html

I totally concur. If we're going to change any Trump-followers' minds we're going to have to end the name calling and go to the gentle persuasion. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rW9R6jgE7SQ

I have a friend that is telling me to add brown sugar to the water, when I water, to make it smell ...
Robecology comments on Nov 3, 2019:
I don't think that sugar serves any nutrient effect on any plants. if anything, you'll encourage ants and other insect pests. If you want healthier plants try "miracle-grow" or any good strong fertilizer... Plants make their own "sugars" and will do so more easily of they're provided with an abundance of nitrogen, Potassium, and Phosphorous...(notice; all minerals....no organic molecules in them) - the famous "threesome" in all good fertilizers - when you see those numbers on any fertilizer bag; that's the percentages of these minerals that are in the fertilizers.
Can I get an awomen?

This is interesting! How a lawsuit over Detroit schools could have an 'earth-shattering' impact ...
Robecology comments on Nov 3, 2019:
Good points... “Every school in the country would be affected,” said Michael Rebell, a Teachers College, Columbia University professor who brought the Rhode Island case. “It would mean that students in other urban areas or rural areas that think they’re getting a totally inadequate education would have a basis to go to federal court and say, ‘Our system isn’t teaching basic literacy and we have a right to it.’ There could be a lot of litigation.”

Did you ever make a list...then leave it home....but you recalled well what was on the list? It's called making a neural pathway. Just like if you run through a tall grass field once, you barely notice a path. If you run through it twice, the path is much clearer? That's how our brain works. It really helps to "take notes" or write stuff down...or even note it on your "phone" (on the calendar, or in "notes") even if you leave the list! You've just doubled your memory time and detail by doing so. (You can probably tell I'm a retired teacher).
