Robecology replies on Feb 16, 2020:
@bleurowz Pre owned may be wise. I think they "stole" my 2013 for a $27k trade in. There's early S's available for around $20K..with totally refreshed batteries. Test drive one...it's free....you'll be hooked. Go without your credit card or checkbook....fair warning! https://www.tesla.com/drive

Robecology replies on Feb 16, 2020:
@bleurowz ..- they're coming down in price - and expanding in color choices. 12 years ago, the Tesla Roadster was $180K. 9 years ago, the S was around $100K. 6 years ago the X came out for $70K. two years ago the III and the Y came out in the $40K range. Make a graph of that; you'll see that it won't be long before we see a budget/basic EV in the $20K range. In the shareholders meeting Elon hinted a compact/subcompact model might come in the future. "It will have reduced weight, so greater efficiency, it could get 5.25 miles per kWh. It might get by with a 40 kWh battery. That could mean a 25K base price." https://forums.tesla.com/forum/forums/should-tesla-make-compactsub-compact-car So the trend is downward in costs, upwards in variety.

Robecology replies on Feb 16, 2020:
@bleurowz and @DavidDuhon Tesla is adding a charging station per week, and Walmart is building EV charging at most of their stores. VW is working on producing mobile chargers for stranded EV motorists; Battery replacement was actually tested to do "on-the-spot" in a couple of places in California; but with neutral/not-worth-it results. And of course; by the time your car needs a new battery - you're also ready to trade up. Let the EV companies worry about replacing batteries. Finally; there's even talk of "million mile batteries" that have a much longer rechargeability. https://www.wired.com/story/tesla-may-soon-have-a-battery-that-can-last-a-million-miles/ https://www.motor1.com/news/389830/vw-mobile-ev-recharge-robot/ https://www.tesla.com/trips

Robecology replies on Feb 16, 2020:
@SenorRotten, @FlippantLlama, @moonmaid Range is - or was - an issue with me when I had the 270 mile range 2013 S. Then I discovered the 325 mile range S and traded up (jan 2019). Now there's a 340 mile S and a 380 mile X....so my point is range is growing all the time. The new Telsa "Cybertruck" is supposed to have a 400 mile range in the budget model and the soon to be produced roadster will have a 600 mile range. There's EV's now being made for 2021-2022 production that boast a 1000 mile range...so that issue is fading. https://kutv.com/news/nation-world/teslas-new-electronic-cybertruck-has-battery-life-up-to-500-miles REMEMBER; Most EV's don't need a special plug to charge. All EV's will be able to charge with regular 120 volt. - but it's a slow charge; 3.5 miles per hour. If you have 220-240 volt at home (for dryers, ovens, AC units) then the speed is quadrupled at least; 14-18 MPH depending on amperage. And yes - the battery does wear down. About 2-3% loss per year; so after 10 years you can expect a 20-30% loss of charging capacity...but most folks trade up or trade in their EV's before 10 years. When I had battery "issues" (kind of my fault) - they swapped it and gave me a new one...no charge. There's an 8 year warrantee on the batteries (today).

Robecology replies on Feb 16, 2020:
@SenorRotten, @FlippantLlama Yes; the total time for trips that are many hundreds of miles is longer...it's a matter of adjusting your time schedule...having more of a tolerant view for frequent "breaks" when the car is charging. I've driven every year to upstate NY from southern Florida; total time when I had a gas car was around 24 hours. With the EV it's around 27 hours.

@SenorRotten Thanks for bringing up that question! It's by far the most common one I get. I once chatted with a new Tesla owner that dIdn't even know that she had an adapter in her car for 120 volt home charging. oh..and both times I ran out...the truck was there in minutes. Even in rural Virginia on a rainy night - the tow guy was there in less than an hour.

@SenorRotten Good answer; But if it'll ease you in to trusting them a bit more;... 95% of EV users simply charge at home, overnight. You have to plan your trips a little more wisely. Having said that.... I've "run out"... twice Why? Because running out of EV power is actually a lot easier to fix then running out of gas. You call the Tesla hotline. They send a truck. They put your car on it...drop you off at the nearest Supercharger. You pay the guy. He waves g'by. Done. No chemicals. No hauling gas cans. So much easier. Look at this map. https://supercharge.info/map

I think I found your/our "missing link". "In 2015, researchers discovered that the common squid has edited more than 60 percent of RNA in its nervous system. Those edits essentially changed its brain physiology, presumably to adapt to various temperature conditions in the ocean. The team returned in 2017 with an even more startling finding - at least two species of octopus and one cuttlefish do the same thing on a regular basis. To draw evolutionary comparisons, they also looked at a nautilus and a gastropod slug, and found their RNA-editing prowess to be lacking. "This shows that high levels of RNA editing is not generally a molluscan thing; it's an invention of the coleoid cephalopods," https://www.sciencealert.com/it-s-official-octopus-and-squid-evolution-is-weirder-than-we-could-have-ever-imagined

@Transition1 When it comes down to it, both parties receive substantial support from registered voters who make $100K+ annually. When it comes to fundraising for campaigns, Democrats actually come out ahead. In many cases, Democrats have been able to raise twice as much (or more) in private political contributions. But what about outside of politicians? Does that mean Democrats are the wealthier party? Which American families are wealthier? Republicans or Democrats? Well, probably Republicans. When it comes down to it, the richest families in America tend to donate to Republican candidates. Forbes reported out of the 50 richest families in the United States, 28 donate to Republican candidates. Another seven donate to Democrats and 15 of the richest families in the U.S. donate to both parties https://budgetandthebees.com/who-is-richer-democrats-or-republicans/

Many don't realize that a regular outlet - 120 volt - is all you need. 220 volt goes from 12 to 18 MPH charge (depending on amperage)...so If you have a dryer outlet in your garage; you're set to get 150 miles per night (10hours charge time @15 MPH charge rate. At a typical $.10 to $0.25 cents a kWH...each KWH gives you 3.5 miles - so that's a cost equivalent of $1 dollar to $2.50 for 35 miles...still cheaper than gas. @Jetty And Kudos to your friends in India using recycled materials to make roads!!! But let me say this about tree planting. What I've discovered is that 'tree planting" is token. Just getting land owners to let land lie undeveloped and the regrowth will naturally occur. Remember only 30-40% of land has trees...and land covers 30% of the planet; so that means only 9-12% of the planet gains from the benefits of forested areas - whereas 90% of the 70% ocean has phytoplankton floating near the surface. It gives many parts of the ocean that we see the green and brown coloration....and that also means 63% of the earth's oxygen is replenished by these microscopic floating pre-plants....who gave us our Oxygen, a billion or more years ago.

@Jetty The points of renewable energy are that... 1. They don't use fuel 2. They don't need high heat to operate 3. They don't produce waste gases which are creating problems in our environment. And yes; for most of the renewables...most of their components will be easily recyclable. -but that's not an important goal right now. The concern about the "recyclability" of renewables, like wind turbines....is almost absurd. They will work quietly, at low heat production, for decades before they need "recycling"....and decades from now recycling will obviously be better. We will be saving kilotons of fuel digging (by huge machines that themselves are hard to recycle) We will be avoiding dumping kilotons of noxious gas in to the environment. We will be avoiding dumping excess heat in to our already overheated planet. Please; do not focus on the 'recyclability" of renewable energy tools and equipment. We are finally working to let fossil fuels stay in the ground. That will be, by far, our most important accomplishment as a civilization in the coming decades. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKCuDxpccYM=IwAR3ttXRoZE4TH2OI4VDw1qediNVGMWH9IU1wecWO3GMKYVCrtyGfgDLpMEw

@Jetty I just can't see the wisdom nor the truth in your comment "Solar/wind/hydro power may be clean but not necessarily sustainable and limitless." They ill be far more sustainable and limitless than any fusion reaction. Fusion still involves intense, incredibly high heat - on the order of tens of thousands of degrees, C or F. That will stress and age any earthly containment. Wind generators will have a heat max of just a few hundred degrees C or F. Much, much less aging and stressful on the equipment - and far safer. Solar uses simple materials...mostly the common element silicon - we call it sand...also a basic ingredient in glass.....which will make solar energy gathering even easier than wind or hydro. Why go the complex, dangerous, high heat (fusion) direction when wind, running/flowing water, and Solar PV are cooler, simpler, and efficient?
