Regardless of what you choose to call it, understanding and moderating your own internal state helps you behave less reactively.
It puts you in a better position to reach conflict solutions, because you’re not drowning in your emotions or relying on someone else to regulate them.
Why do emotions seem to rule us?
According to evolutionary psychologists, emotions are the result of brain circuitry we developed early in our evolutionary history. Emotions function to push us away from negative (aversive) cues in our environment, and pull us towards positive (appetitive) situations.
For example, feeling fear when you see a large carnivorous animal is likely to motivate you to get away from it. If you weren’t afraid, you might decide to pet it, and get eaten in response. Thus, emotions help us survive.
That doesn’t mean we should blindly follow everything we feel. Modern life is complex, and while emotions push or pull us in a particular direction, we can also use our own internal logic to determine which direction will be most helpful to us in the long-term.
Sometimes that’s easier said than done in a relationship.
Taking a step back to analyse our emotions objectively in this way can be particularly tricky in a relationship context.
Our romantic relationships often mirror our style of attachment to our primary caregivers. For this reason, people sometimes fall into the trap of assuming that their partners have an automatic responsibility to mitigate any difficult feelings that may arise.

It sound's like the "chicken wire" wasn't thick or dense enough. You might need a thicker gauged chain-link fencing. An expensive camera set up will only confirm the predator exists and is clever/strong enough to break through chicken wire. You know this already.
