Mr. Mugica has emerged as an unlikely figure with the power to put the genie back in the bottle. Last week, his lawyer sent scathing letters to the Fox News Channel, Newsmax and OAN demanding that they immediately, forcefully clear his company’s name — and that they retain documents for a planned defamation lawsuit. He has, legal experts say, an unusually strong case. And his new lawyer is J. Erik Connolly, who not coincidentally won the largest settlement in the history of American media defamation in 2017, at least $177 million, for a beef producer whose “lean finely textured beef” was described by ABC News as “pink slime.”

Does anyone in here believe in reincarnation?
Robecology comments on Dec 21, 2020:
@DBlaine There's a remote possibility that a trace of your DNA remains whole (in teeth, hair, and fingernails, for example; - scientists have found ancient DNA in well preserved remains) but it would take an intentional effort to transfer that DNA to a reproductive tissue (sperm or eggs) to even have a remote chance of "reincarnation" - it's called "cloning"....you might create a "twin" of yourself...but with no association other than looking exactly alike. Only flowers, rodents, and sheep have been "cloned" to date. Google "Cloning" So inform or ask your family or friends to preserve some part of you...then ask a relative to have that DNA inserted in to their sperm/eggs and yea - a similar form of who you are might be reproduced....but with no memories - it's like having a twin of you born after you die...not reincarnation by a long shot. And we have cloned sheep....so if you're desperate speak to a scientist in this area who may be able to save your DNA for a future twin of you...but sorry...no "reincarnation"

Robecology comments on Dec 20, 2020:
Not a bad thing to be taking a break from dating...The world's been growing...as in "reproducing"...150 more births, than deaths, per minute, 220,000 more per day. Again; that's births, minus deaths....so we need to slow that down a bit. Regroup. Fall in love with yourself. Focus on self-awareness. This isn't a bad thing. https://www.worldometers.info

I've also read that as our population continues to grow (150 more births, than deaths, per minute, 220,000 more per day) that we are speeding up our pollution rate, our chances for another pandemic, and our rush toward widespread poverty. Viruses are getting stronger, as well as vectors for disease spread....especially mosquitoes! Oh...and ice melt rate is increasing in both Antarctica and Arctic regions. Mount Rushmore
Robecology comments on Dec 18, 2020:
I get why the did the carving. It was a noble effort. What's not noble is that it was done on land that recently had belonged to the Native American tribes in the area...as were most lands in the U.S.; and we lied and cheated to steal most of these locations. The creation of Mount Rushmore is a story of struggle — and to some, desecration. The Black Hills are sacred to the Lakota Sioux, the original occupants of the area when white settlers arrived. For some, the four presidents carved in the hill are not without negative symbolism. The Sioux have never had much luck dealing with white men. In the Treaty of 1868, the U.S. government promised the Sioux territory that included the Black Hills in perpetuity. Perpetuity lasted only until gold was found in the mountains and prospectors migrated there in the 1870s. The federal government then forced the Sioux to relinquish the Black Hills portion of their reservation. https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/features/rushmore-sioux/

@Affrives So #1; Both of the video participants are of the Muslim faith. So of course they're going to try to minimize/trivialize science.....but they - you - can't. #2. Science is not a body of knowledge - it's a learning strategy. If you practice fact-based information you're being scientific. If you're expressing faith in unproven doctrine - you're being religious - the opposite of being scientific. Science is not dependent on blind obedience....religion is. #3.The best scientists are always open to change. They welcome being proven wrong. The best religious are locked in to the words and sayings of their originators, their "prophets. They try to apply their ancient wisdom to modern life....and they are failing. #4. Science is a process of evaluating and analyzing data. Religion if a process of accepting doctrine. I think St. Nicholas was born in Greece, and did most of his "saintly" work Turkey! In his later life it was suggested that he had imitators. Interesting side story; his most prodigious activity was the spreading of Oranges as a popular treat. He often did "sneak in" to homes and stuff them in to stockings (actually hanging by the fireplace to dry). The myths about his sleigh and reindeer had some validity as well...he did have huge sacs of oranges that he distributed widely....using his sleigh and reindeer. Of course the Christian trend was to exaggerate everything...so he then was said to "fly", he allegedly landed on rooftops, worked at the north pole, and went down chimneys to leave his "prizes" according to the middle ages myth-makers. Oh...and say "Saint Nicholas" fast a few times...and you get Santa Claus. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Nicholas

As a demographer I have to disagree. There's little to no drive to " spit upon his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats" if one is alon or isolated. The problems rise when our - or any organism's - population density reaches a critical point. The levels frustration fall with the evolution of a working society (n other words, laws, rules, and mores are shared and respected) and rise when that society gets too crowded. It's been proven to be true for plants, insects, almost every living being....isolate them and they strive for cooperation. Crowd them and an instinct stirs that brings up the-black-flag-raising-throat-slitting impulse. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1501789/pdf/califmed00143-0080.pdf

Yes; I concur; the (Gregorian/Christian) new year's "resolutions" are a bit of a joke. Kudos on deciding to get fit...it's a real challenge to fight hunger, to change one's diet and exerciser routines.. As a health teacher I taught that eating habits were ingrained in us in much the same way as religion was/is...before we could walk and talk our loving parents said certain things, and fed us certain things. When we cried/got emotional. parents have a choice; to ignore, to physically comfort, or to shove food in our mouths. And that food could have been anything from breast milk to milk-duds - from a healthy nutritious snack to a weight-gaining one...and again...all before we could walk and talk. The addiction ran deep...so you deserve a pat on the back for changing - and "resolving" to change it...regardless of the calendar.

It looks like we as a species are lined up for extinction. Most ecologists believe that we are in the midst of the sixth mass extinction. Humanity’s impact on nature, they say, is now comparable to the five previous catastrophic events over the past 600 million years, during which up to 95 percent of the planet’s species disappeared. We may very well be. But recent studies have cited extinction rates that are extremely fuzzy and vary wildly. https://e360.yale.edu/features/global_extinction_rates_why_do_estimates_vary_so_wildly

Only a few decades ago the population was 4 billion...now we're closing in on 8 billion. And we're increasing...births minus deaths...at 150 more per minute. See the data link, below. Viruses need a certain minimal distance to transmit...and we're getting closer to that every minute/hour/day. Viruses go through a lifespan in 8 hours. Then there's the risk-taker...(s)he eats carelessly, exercises in spurts or often not at all, and lives a full and "vivacious" life. Will the "cacoon" dweller/perfect eater/exerciser live longer? Probably. Will their life be "fuller"? - that's the big question. IMO...that's a popular new abbreviation for "In My Opinion" .... We have to strike a balance. Isn't capitalism great
Robecology comments on Dec 5, 2020:
That's why there's anti-trust laws and unions in America. Capitalism is occurring in Communist and other autocratic nations. Many people in America take advantage of cheap overseas labor to get American products made there....sold here. Don't get me started.

I own a Tesla with navigation, Autopilot and adaptive Cruise control..and in general I must report that it's an ultra conservative, PITA. We call it "ghost braking" - but I think you get the idea. Don't get me wrong...it's OK for stop and go traffic...and long stretches on the highway...and the directions are adaptive...if you make a wrong turn it quickly shows you how to correct it...so the map nav in particular is useful...but the rest....meh!
You knew sooner or later it would happen

I hate to admit it; but this horrible behavior by our POTUS has just riled me. Those of us who feel confident in the "American way" are 99% sure Biden will be inaugurated on Jan 20th. But having said that - there's 1% assumption that Trump might make a significant stir. Trump might try one of several things. He might end up totally free, with a pension - or in jail. Here's the options as I see it. He might try an "inauguration party" at Mar a Lago....and though he won't resist moving out of the WH...he will resist several other "holdings" given to him as "commander in Chief" He will possibly claim he's still POTUS. He might be a "flight risk"...and might end up being quietly "detained" He might go through the courts and arrange a stall on the Electoral college tabulation, and/or the Congressional final count. He might end up being declared pardoned of all charges - assuming he just agrees to not press the "fraud" allegations any more. This is a troubling period of time coming up... but again...it's troubling only in a small way. It's embarrassing for us as Americans that he's fighting this. It's sad for us that we had to do so many mail-in ballots. It's sad that the resistance to mailing ballots. to minority voting, and to getting properly registered to vote was such a struggle. And finally...I have to add...that it's frustrating for many of us to tolerate the win for "centrist" Biden....many of us were hoping for Bernie. Sorry - had to rant. And I don't feel much better...but thanks for giving me the platform!
Christmas 2020 style!

I know this is intended as a joke...but many believe - falsely - that wind energy kills a lot of birds, and there's even been some congresspeople who've actually seriously declared that it will be bad for earth. I hope I don't see this used by anti-renewable energy folk...but I fear it might be. And who can forget Trump's serious reference to them causing "cancer'?
Hi - I'm not sure what to do about something.

Robecology comments on Nov 30, 2020:
The only flaw in your logic is when you say you "realized is that Christians can't be saved" . True atheists don't concern themselves with "saving" one's soul...or even having a "soul" for that matter. One thing the bible said that's science..."From dust you came and to dust you shall return". Sad, but true; here's more accurate, and scientifically provable atheist memes.

What's your POV on the Electoral College? I'm afraid that DJT will do everything in his power to change the outcome of this election...and if that means going to Washington on Dec 14th to personally appeal to every elector....I wouldn't put it passed him. I recall doing a report on it for a high school class over 50 years ago....and yet we still cling to this old system....and I don't foresee the constitutional amendment required to change or cancel it in the near future. Here's an article - a PDF, actually - from the U.S. Congress about it...to give you the details; I know this is a world-wide audience; so your opinions are valued! https://crsreports.congress.gov/product/pdf/IF/IF11641

interesting. I predict that we're on the brink of extinction...but that will only re-set the evolutionary clock back a few to a dozen or more million years. I'm guessing most large land mammals will die off. I'm guessing that Procyon genus (raccoons) will evolve in to dominance; then evolve larger size and even more intelligence. Who knows - they might re-invent technology and even "digital watches"? Meanwhile whales and dolphins will continue their evolution. I think they're the smartest; as the original post suggests...they never "left the oceans".
