Did you know that the more steep the mountain, the younger it is geologically! The Alps and Rockies are only a few million years old...the softly rounded Catskills and Appalachians are hundreds of millions of years old. Also; mountain ranges that are jagged and steep are often still geologically "rising" or "uplifting"...the 14 tallest and most jagged mountains in the world, in the Himalayas....are also the home to the fastest rising or uplifting geologic formations. http://www.primaryhomeworkhelp.co.uk/mountains/facts.htm

China tried - with mixed results - to enforce the 1-child limits. They had limited success. The greater promise is education; yes; the world is getting smarter....and the wiser are catching on to the cost to raise a child - both financial and emotional. So the population growth curve is not growing as it was decades ago...but it's still growing. Developed nations like growth. All DN's have tax incentives for larger families. And the UDN (under-developed nations) are going through what us demographers call a "Demographic transition". The big question is will we transition to end fossil fuels, mitigate climate change, and slow the growth in time to prevent a catastrophic collapse? Remember this little simple observation, made by Thomas R. Malthus - the father of Demography made in 1812 - over 200 years ago; "As the quantity of life (in any given area) increases, the quality of life decreases". He made this comment in one of his papers criticizing London's growth - and the world was just turning 1 billion when he wrote this. Today we are a 7.7 billion, and increasing (births minus deaths) at the rate of 158 per minute, 227,000 per day, 1.59 million per week) https://www.worldometers.info http://www.bitsofscience.org/21st-century-forecasts-for-sea-level-rise-and-world-population-growth-7279/

BTW, Ed, Happy 50th anniversary of Earth Day; Today, April 22, 2020. And as an ecologist who's also constantly challenged with weight maintenance, I have a bone to pick with you. - - - - - I love your devotion to B.O. - but I can't concur with your comment " Each person who changes their diet to vegan does about the same to combat climate change as driving an electric vehicle." Driving an EV is far more helpful to the environment than going vegan. The whole animal farming industry adds as low as 5% and as high as 10% of G.W. gases...compared to 50-55% for gas driven vehicles. Driving a I.C.E.(internal combustion engine) car produces pounds of CO2 per mile....changing to an EV saves thousands of pounds per year of this gas going in to the atmosphere. And even if the EV is powered by central power (Coal 25-30% Petrol 55-60% Wind, hydro, nuclear 10-20%) it's still 100% more efficient than individual cars. Does going vegan make you healthier? No doubt. Is it better for the environment? of Course. but it's not the same as driving an EV. And neither have much of an effect on the environment. "Going vegetarian actually is quite difficult: One large U.S. survey indicates that 84% of people fail, most of them in less than a year. But a systematic peer-reviewed study has shown that, even if they succeed, their vegetarian diets reduce individual CO2 emissions by the equivalent of 540 kilos — or just 4.3% of the emissions of the average inhabitant of a developed country. Furthermore, there is a “rebound effect,” as money saved on cheaper vegetarian food is spent on goods and services that cause additional greenhouse-gas emissions. Once we account for this, going entirely vegetarian reduces a person’s total emissions by only 2%". https://www.marketwatch.com/story/your-electric-car-and-vegetarian-diet-are-pointless-virtue-signalling-in-fighting-climate-change-2019-12-26

Recently learned an interesting theory about "comets" - They're mostly H2O ice - and there's this theory that they came from other solar systems that had oceans...that - when the planet "exploded" the oceans were "freeze dried"...and sent off in to space...to be captured by other solar systems. No wonder scientists want to not only "land" on them but "drill in" to them. Imagine finding organic remains? Our life might have come from other solar systems...

Happy Friday! It's payday and time to pay the bills! What bills do you resent having to pay?
Robecology comments on Apr 17, 2020:
I just drove nearly an hour and paid $40 to get a blood test; the receptionist told me to contact my insurer; that I could get the same tests done closer to home and at a lower - or no - cost to me. WTF? Why do I have to go to the office to find this out? Not happy. Can't wait until November; I sooooo hope we create a better, fairer, wiser health system in our nation.

That's not an easy pose to hold, either. It's a tougher-to-hold pose for more advanced students...called the "Boat pose" or Navasana...
Something to warm up a snowy April Friday

I tried going to the site; hit real quick and far too often with click-bait junk. Perhaps go to the source and copy and past it here?
I wonder what Carlin would say about all this

Robecology comments on Apr 16, 2020:
In my biblical research days I discovered something interesting about the above visualized event; only 1 person was alleged to have "witnessed" Jesus leaving his tomb. Can you guess who it was? Mary Magdaline....his alleged wife. But because she was a woman she wasn't allowed to write it in any scriptures. It was John, who, decades later, after having spoken with Mary, wrote down her account. Sexism was alive and well back then; still is strong in the "church" today. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Magdalene
So I've tried again to make a video.

Robecology comments on Apr 16, 2020:
What I've heard is that building and placing alternative energy materials and facilities is creating a lot of jobs. Now - to be fair - when we do transition effectively to wind gen and solar power - when the manufacturing of these devices winds down...there will be a thinning back of the crew... -but that's partially the point. We shouldn't have to employ massive numbers to obtain energy; and our population growth rate is slowing as well. So fewer folk will run more efficient power sources. Hopefully by mid-century there will be a significantly increased number of easier and cheaper to operate cars, power plants and energy producers...and a slowing down...perhaps even a leveling off...of human popuation. All facilities and vehicles will need maintenance. But we are, wisely, also slowing down our population growth. Perhaps some day we will level off - achieve ZPG.....and then perhaps, even decline. If we dont slow down our growth; mother nature will do it for us. Allow me to throw in a nice reference; China is years ahead of the west in Renewable energy; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renewable_energy_in_China

Interesting. I thought Miami-Dade had a program of getting rid of the incredibly fast growing (and poorly adapted to hurricanes) Australian Pines? According to the article; "In 1965, a group of civic leaders failed to persuade the city commission to uproot every last one of the death-defying pines. In 2001, preservationists hoped to preempt any future attempts by having Pine Tree Drive designated a historic roadway. For a while, it worked. However, in recent years, city officials have been forced to consider the risk the old trees pose to pedestrians and motorists. Following Hurricane Irma in 2017, which knocked over two pines, arborists contracted by the city concluded that nearly all of the Australian pines would require pruning." https://www.miaminewtimes.com/news/miami-beach-will-prune-pines-on-historic-pine-tree-drive-starting-late-june-11194825
