Robecology comments on May 25, 2020:
The following of Trump is said to be more of a "cult" than a "religious" thing. He doesn't profess much - if anything - about god. But he clearly, obviously, and repeatedly makes stuff up...then lies about what he said about it if he's ever called out on it. I found a great cartoon to explain the behavior;

Robecology comments on May 25, 2020:
I not only ignore most "use-by" comments...I let my senses determine the value of foods and meds that are allegedly "expired". I eat blue cheese...complete with thick colonies of blue mold. If I find mold growing on any cheese I will not throw it "away" - I will rinse the mold and use it; haven't gotten sick once. Meats and sauces are a different story; and you can taste that some foods have turned sour from overage...Although even "souring" is a desired feature in some foods.

It's a dead-end, negative article. It points out the bad without pointing out the options to fix it. Only 62 million voting Americans gave us this arrogant, righteous and hypocritical government. His conclusion; "The good news, I suppose, is this. The fireworks of American collapse have only really just begun." is general, and arrogant itself. I predict that this not only won't last past this fall....but it was a wake-up call. It showed us that 1. Christians are extremely hypocritical, and delusional 2. The greedy are involved in a serious, self-destructive delusion. 3. The rest of the world is not only coming to regard us as less important; they're laughing at our bumbling, and mis-steps. We will fix this soon. and we will fix this powerfully.

I'm not sure if that's territorial to other males...or a way to attract females...probably both? Being agnostic; I had to look it up... Charles Darwin suggested they served to attract females, and the showy features of the males had evolved by sexual selection. More recently, Amotz Zahavi proposed in his handicap theory that these features acted as honest signals of the males' fitness, since less fit males would be disadvantaged by the difficulty of surviving with such large and conspicuous structures. https://adirondackanimalland.com/animal-detail.aspx?ID=25
Happy Saturday all. What insensitivities push your buttons hard?
Robecology comments on May 23, 2020:
There's no way to approach a heavy person. They "take offense" no matter what you say regarding their weight. It's just a challenge to make those who are heavy more conscientious. I'm a retired health teacher - so please forgive my "preaching" - but here goes.... They say they've "tried every trick in the book" and they tell me "you're lucky" or "you have genes for being slim" or some other mild put-off; then continue to ignore wise eating habits. Our nation is suffering an epidemic of weight gain. They say we who bring it to their attention are "insensitive" I say we're hypersensitive. If we don't get serious about it....then those who suffer being "heavy set" will continue to suffer. Their lives will be shorter. They will be more susceptible to diseases. We need to stop "taking offense" and get serious. Again...sorry for the rant...but I guess you touched my "buttons" Here's a GIF from the CDC. http://www.slate.com/content/dam/slate/articles/news_and_politics/map_of_the_week/2013/04/130417-MOTW-obesity-map.gif Here's the whole article http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/map_of_the_week/2013/04/obesity_in_america_cdc_releases_gif_of_epidemic_over_time.html

Robecology comments on May 22, 2020:
A decades-old question. The answer is simple; The air under the wings must be going a certain speed - depending on the plane - to lift it. It's not ground speed; it's relative wind speed. Theoretically if there was a strong and consistent "head wind" )wind coming toward the craft) then the speed on the ground would be reduced accordingly. That's why most airports schedule takeoffs "in to the wind".

How would you describe white American culture?
Robecology comments on May 21, 2020:
Consider dropping the "white" term. American culture is becoming ethnically mixed with every inter-racial marrage....in a few decades I'm projecting a blend of all colors and ethnicities. But the "American" culture is real. It is unique. We have been at it a long time. What stratifies us more is not so much color any more, but degree of success...and not necessarily educationally tied success. There's lots of money out there with folk who didn't do so well in school...but found their way in to a lucrative business. That's why there's lots of wealthy folk out there that don't seem to be too smart. And that's also why there's a lot of college graduates - very academically sharp - working at grocery stores and other jobs that require little or no brain power. That seems to be the "America" I know.
The Leftist Group is for liberals.
Robecology comments on May 21, 2020:
There's a difference between "Picking a fight" and "encouraging a debate". I welcome "outliers" of any group that I'm in that has a social or political "lean"...many fear them, call them names (commonly , Troll) and want them banned. And I have been "banned" from several groups; both here and on FB. But I honestly consider myself genuinely interested in the thought processes of those who think differently than I do....and I'm saddened that they fear the debate, call me a "troll" and ban me. I say....bring it. That goes for even the religious who want to discuss agnosticism with me. If they're following the debate rules...which basically says no personal attacks, no name calling....then I'm good - in fact -I'm welcoming the debate. Life's too short. We can all "be in the choir" and agree with all we agree on...or we can welcome the curious...as long as they're polite and debate with "decorum". Here's my go-to debate standard (the debate pyramid, below). Please consider copying, saving, and sharing with those who don't "get it". BTW; Many confuse the term (noun) "Troll" with the fishing "troller" (adjective). Here's my take... One who "throws out bait for suckers to take" (they throw out a controversial remark to get reactions) - is being a Troller...not the classic fictional "Troll".

Robecology comments on May 19, 2020:
The #religulous have a point...DNA is too eloquent, too efficient to have evolved at the start of our planet.... ...So I have suggested that we did, in fact, probably get DNA from other planets and/or other solar systems. We know for a fact that our oceans were filled by mostly comet debris; But what, exactly, is a comet? It's defined as a mostly water (H2O) ice planetary mass. The big questions are; 1. Where did they come from? and 2. What was inside them? My theory is that other "Goldilocks-zone" planets - that had evolved water and oceans long before we did - exploded. When they did, their water bodies "freeze-dried" as huge masses...some many miles across - were instantly exposed to the deep cold of space. So their contents were quick-frozen. I'm sure most "died" as organismic life...but their cellular DNA remained - frozen - inside these comets....that traveled through space -until captured by our early -forming solar system. We've proven the veracity of DNA. We've found whole segments of it in many thousand year old Mastadon remains buried in the permafrost. We've recently found some deep inside 40,000 year old teeth. So why should DNA not have come from other planetary bodies that might have, in turn, received their DNA from still older systems? When they say we're made of "star-stuff" I honestly think that might include the DNA that evolved long ago, and far away. Here's NASA's take on Comets. https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/asteroids-comets-and-meteors/comets/in-depth/

Robecology comments on May 15, 2020:
For those who need a subscription...here you go! Hannah and I were coworkers at one of the most famous hotels in New York City. We worked side-by-side, twelve-hours a day, six days a week. Hannah and I got along well, but neither of us felt an attraction to each other. We didn’t share many interests, so I never thought of her as someone I’d want to date in the early days of our relationship. But my feelings for her changed. A bunch of us were planning an after-work get together. The crowd wanted to go bar hopping downtown. The few people who objected, including me, eventually gave in to the pressure. Hannah proved the exception. She surprised everyone by saying she’d go to the old-folks jazz bar down the street, alone if it came to that. A few in the group gave disapproving looks, but I loved that she defied the crowd and didn’t care what people thought. Her fearless individuality made her more appealing. We became good friends and even dated years later. Our romance didn’t last, but that early experience triggered a realization that attractiveness encompassed more than just physical beauty. A pretty face or sculpted body might turn heads, but how you act and carry yourself attracts people long after an initial burst of infatuation. Not everyone will find these behaviors attractive. But I’ve discovered over the decades that people who exhibit these qualities find themselves admired, respected, and often desired. 1. Be willing to do your own thing even when it’s not popular. It wasn’t that Hannah defied the clique’s leadership to go to a jazz bar that interested me. No, it was that she did so even though it made her unpopular — and she did it with fearless confidence. She resisted peer pressure and didn’t care how it made her look. Sure, sometimes you need to compromise or give in to maintain group cohesion. Stubbornness is not an attractive quality. But pursuing your interests and expressing your individuality dials up your allure, especially when you do so in the face of disapproval. 2. Don’t get involved in petty nonsense. If you watch group politics from afar, you often see puzzling behavior. The group seems to argue and fret over the most meaningless crap. It’s human nature, I guess, and we all succumb to it from time to time. As an observer, it’s almost comical. But if you’ve ever been in a relationship with someone who gabs about and stresses over trivial nonsense, you know how unattractive it becomes. The attractive one recognizes pettiness and avoids it; they stay above the fray and involve themselves only to make peace when relations begin to redline. They’re the ones you count on to remain temperate when everyone else runs hot. 3. Remember the finer details. Remembering a ...

The choices are clear. This infrection is spreading fast. We all will "get it" eventually; either by contagion-infection or by vaccination. The strong and young barely notice they have it. The weak, and elderly suffer greatly. If we social distance - yes -our economy suffers. We suffer. Domestic abuse and obesity is on the rise. Unemployment...and for many - loss of health care because they're not working - is hurting. But we're alive. We're helping to keep our elderly alive. - - - - - - - - - - - If we "get out and go to work". yes - we'll get our income back - and many will get health insurance by being employed again. We'll "get out of the house" and "get out of eachother's hair"....the horrors of living closely with your family too long will dissipate . But we will increase the number of deaths and illnesses from this infection. Choose. But chose wisely.

We've been given one big lesson about sharing colds...if we're careless, and mingle too irresponsibly - we spread colds and infections. I wash my hands more, pick my nose less. avoid talking closely to people, Carry sani-wipes....and in general I'm a much more "sanitary" person. Do I want to become O/C about it? No. And I do believe that some are becoming just that. I also think that by years end most of us will have the antibodies for this COVID thing in our systems. Many healthy young folk will catch it...get through it...and barely notice the effects. But I - and i think many more - are much more wary about visiting the elderly in nursing homes. I think we've all learned a lot more about the "front-line" medical people, as well. They deserve a lot more credit.
That's my explanation. 🤔😂

Robecology comments on May 13, 2020:
Your health is almost a different factor - possibly unrelated - to your chances of Catching COVID19. It depends on your social mixing; not the 3 variables you've given. Whether you're scientific or pseudo-scientific.. .if you mix and mingle with people you increase your chances of "catching" it. Scientific folk might have an attitude of "I'll catch it - isolate - then avoid sharing it with health-compromised that I know. Or they're good at social isolation; they wear masks, avoid contact with suspicious (sickly) people and avoid catching it. Or they might have wise protective equipment. Or they might be fanatically/obsessively clean. There's too many variables to say they're related.
Yup .

Shit. What an awful word. "If you're not Country, you're not shit" Does that mean if you are Country, you are shit? And what's this about not knowing "shit". Personally; I don't see the need to know any shit - nor anything about shit. "Are you shitting me"? "Do you give a shit"? i shit you not. And I don't give a shit. wow...I'm tempted to share this in the language abuse group. But frankly....I don't give a shit....

Robecology comments on May 13, 2020:
I believe the second pic is one of the old original "Maleleuca's" or Paper bark trees. The were banned from being planted and sold in the 80's because they're such an agressive "invasive" that whole sections of the Everglades were taken over by them. They actually were intentionally disseminated in the early part of last century as a way to dry up the Everglades. Melaleuca trees have extensively invaded South Florida, displacing native vegetation in wetland and upland environments. Native to Australia and Malaysia, melaleuca was introduced into Florida in 1906 as a potential commercial timber and later extensively sold as a landscape ornamental tree and windbreak. It's now called "The Green Menace from Down Under" https://pesticide.ifas.ufl.edu/courses/pdfs/melaleuca/Melaleuca.pdf
True that. But then, are we supposed to forgive them for their stupidity?

The problems with even one like that is that all of a sudden you have more veggies than you can consume. The local restaurants won't touch 'em. You can't give them away....so you freeze and "can" ( or jar) as much as you can....there's a lot of loss in a garden even that big/small.

The Mysterious Disappearance of SARS & Why We Will Need a Vaccine for COVID-19 [heavy.com]
Robecology comments on May 12, 2020:
What we don't know is how many have antibodies in their bodies that are already fighting any invasion by the SARS or COVID viruses. Tests done on that air-craft carrier found nearly all the crew showed signs of antibody production - yet most were asymptomatic. We might already be immune to both. Coronavirus | COVID-19 Updates SECDEF: Majority of Roosevelt sailors with COVID-19 are asymptomatic https://www.navytimes.com/news/coronavirus/2020/04/16/secdef-majority-of-roosevelt-sailors-with-covid-19-are-asymptomatic-flattop-still-wartime-ready/
Really Grandma?!
Robecology comments on May 12, 2020:
It's charming, and cute....but fortunately it's passé. As a demographer/population biologist I know why this occurred. Every species are compelled to over-produce. What we were slow to realize is that we have improved "death-control" decades before "birth control" - consequently all our little ones (in prior generations) were kept alive. Consequently; 3 generations of having 5 kids that make it to fecundity (the age of reproduction) thanks to modern medicine allowed - if they marry and each have 5 chidren - 5 x 5 or 25 to be reproduced. And those 25 that made it to fecundity gave us 5 x 25 or 125 fecund adults in 3 generations. In the pre-health/sanitation/medicine past 5 kids (and often more) led to 1 fecund adult...who had 5 (or more) kids, 1 of whom led to a fecund adult...who had 5 kids who led to 1 fecund adult. Or 1 fecund adult in 3 generations. (or in the case of Ms Fecund, in the image; 16 future baby makers). So you can say that our growth is because of the success of "death control" - or public health, and medicine. It's now the obligation of public health, world medicine researchers, and wise leaders to make "birth control" that's safe and effective for both sexes...not just women. Otherwise we're doomed.
I think this is a most notable achievement. So I must share. [yahoo.com]

Good idea to go work with Amazon...but expect high demands. Don't fear these pro-freedom folk. They're just naive; and the more they mix and mingle - the more likely they are to not only get infected but share it with the weaker members of their family. They will actually be actively lowering their own numbers...which might be good for America.
The consequences of marriage. 🤔😂
Robecology comments on May 12, 2020:
It is stressful. I have no doubt that it's an age inducing or age-accelerating factor. It is a tougher, more challenging thing - to live in the same home with any other adult. Even more so if you're involved in raising children. But it's a challenge that I met for at least 3 decades in my life. Now it's just me...and I'm so much F'ing happier that way!
This is beauty, resulting from relentless drive and determination.

Robecology comments on May 12, 2020:
Old friendships form in our youth...two consistent ones that have lasted decades for me had to do with the male "hunt" for female relationships....it's a bonding that's strong, and long lasting....long after the women in our lives have died or become "history". Caveat...this is my opinion. Therefore making friends today is much different. Making friends of the opposite sex is still more of a challenge (for me at least, and IMO for most) simply because there's that "relationship possibility" factoring in...can we/should we be friends "with benefits"? Again, In My Opinion. (IMO). This seems to be a question that's on the mind of most - dare I say all? - opposite sex friendships. Again; this is just IMO...I don't want to debate what I feel strongly is real.
Definition: weed vs wildflower. I can't really tell the difference. 😎🍷
Robecology comments on May 12, 2020:
The definitions are not based on the Phenotype (its physical appearance) but by its' growth relevant to the gardening practices of us H. sapiens. A weed is an unwanted wild growth in any of our places of cultivation. A wildflower could be the same exact plant - NOT growing in our "gardens" or "farms" (cultivated places)
Please help me to convince people that COMMON SENSE IS NOT THE SAME THING AS SCIENCE.
Robecology comments on May 12, 2020:
It's an uphill battle. I've tried for decades...now happily retired, and convinced that there's 100 different interpretations of "common sense"...and a poor understanding of "fact-based-research" or as we Science teachers call it, the S.M. I find this cartoon video explaining the "common sense" of the #Trumpster comforting... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rW9R6jgE7SQ
How much longer do you guys in USA have to put up with this nonsense?
Robecology comments on May 12, 2020:
It isn't quite "nonsense"....but it is dangerously absurd. Trump's obviously failing, and losing it. Today at 10 AM is a historic review by the Supreme Court about the legality of Trump hiding his taxes...and if the S.C. stays true to its' decision against Nixon...we should be able to finally see the corruption. But the SC is now loaded in his favor. To put it in Godfather lingo..."he has the judges in his pocket"...so this will be interesting...and maybe - even - nonsensical.

I've been lucky. I retired in 2012; and moved in to an adult-acitve-lifestyle community - so I'm surrounded with beaches, tennis courts a golf course, shuffleboard, Bocci-ball courts, etc. I have a good bike and commit to biking at least a half-hour every day. I have a small pool that I can do laps in just downstairs; and this site, plus Facebook, plus Words with Friends....and my day goes by quickly. -and having to quarantine has fit right in to my retired lifestyle. The lady-friend objects...and fortunately she does visit on rare occastions....and insists i get out and do stuff. Here's a couple pics of us riding the past weekend... Not sure why one's appearing turned 90º and another 180º....but I'm sure Agnostic @admin is working on it?
