Women only. No girls.
Happy Thursday Friends! What’s the coldest you’ve ever been?
Robecology comments on May 14, 2020:
I endured New York; in fact upstate NY...through the 1970's....when it was really cold. Some climate forecasters were predicting an "ice age" back then...and global temps were dropping... It was the last time temps dropped....they've been rising steadliy since the 80's. (see chart, below) But I remember bitter cold. Wearing scarves around my head. Feeling numbing cold in my feet. I moved to Florida in 77...the year it "snowed in Miami"....and it's been warming ever since... ...but being "Mediterranian-blooded" (dark, easily tanned, Caucasian) I love it down here!
Hello everyone.
Robecology comments on May 13, 2020:
We've been given one big lesson about sharing colds...if we're careless, and mingle too irresponsibly - we spread colds and infections. I wash my hands more, pick my nose less. avoid talking closely to people, Carry sani-wipes....and in general I'm a much more "sanitary" person. Do I want to become O/C about it? No. And I do believe that some are becoming just that. I also think that by years end most of us will have the antibodies for this COVID thing in our systems. Many healthy young folk will catch it...get through it...and barely notice the effects. But I - and i think many more - are much more wary about visiting the elderly in nursing homes. I think we've all learned a lot more about the "front-line" medical people, as well. They deserve a lot more credit.
That's my explanation. 🤔😂

Robecology comments on May 13, 2020:
Your health is almost a different factor - possibly unrelated - to your chances of Catching COVID19. It depends on your social mixing; not the 3 variables you've given. Whether you're scientific or pseudo-scientific.. .if you mix and mingle with people you increase your chances of "catching" it. Scientific folk might have an attitude of "I'll catch it - isolate - then avoid sharing it with health-compromised that I know. Or they're good at social isolation; they wear masks, avoid contact with suspicious (sickly) people and avoid catching it. Or they might have wise protective equipment. Or they might be fanatically/obsessively clean. There's too many variables to say they're related.
Yup .
Robecology comments on May 13, 2020:
Shit. What an awful word. "If you're not Country, you're not shit" Does that mean if you are Country, you are shit? And what's this about not knowing "shit". Personally; I don't see the need to know any shit - nor anything about shit. "Are you shitting me"? "Do you give a shit"? i shit you not. And I don't give a shit. wow...I'm tempted to share this in the language abuse group. But frankly....I don't give a shit....

Robecology comments on May 13, 2020:
I believe the second pic is one of the old original "Maleleuca's" or Paper bark trees. The were banned from being planted and sold in the 80's because they're such an agressive "invasive" that whole sections of the Everglades were taken over by them. They actually were intentionally disseminated in the early part of last century as a way to dry up the Everglades. Melaleuca trees have extensively invaded South Florida, displacing native vegetation in wetland and upland environments. Native to Australia and Malaysia, melaleuca was introduced into Florida in 1906 as a potential commercial timber and later extensively sold as a landscape ornamental tree and windbreak. It's now called "The Green Menace from Down Under" https://pesticide.ifas.ufl.edu/courses/pdfs/melaleuca/Melaleuca.pdf
True that. But then, are we supposed to forgive them for their stupidity?

Robecology comments on May 12, 2020:
The problems with even one like that is that all of a sudden you have more veggies than you can consume. The local restaurants won't touch 'em. You can't give them away....so you freeze and "can" ( or jar) as much as you can....there's a lot of loss in a garden even that big/small.

Robecology comments on May 12, 2020:
What we don't know is how many have antibodies in their bodies that are already fighting any invasion by the SARS or COVID viruses. Tests done on that air-craft carrier found nearly all the crew showed signs of antibody production - yet most were asymptomatic. We might already be immune to both. Coronavirus | COVID-19 Updates SECDEF: Majority of Roosevelt sailors with COVID-19 are asymptomatic https://www.navytimes.com/news/coronavirus/2020/04/16/secdef-majority-of-roosevelt-sailors-with-covid-19-are-asymptomatic-flattop-still-wartime-ready/
Really Grandma?!
Robecology comments on May 12, 2020:
It's charming, and cute....but fortunately it's passé. As a demographer/population biologist I know why this occurred. Every species are compelled to over-produce. What we were slow to realize is that we have improved "death-control" decades before "birth control" - consequently all our little ones (in prior generations) were kept alive. Consequently; 3 generations of having 5 kids that make it to fecundity (the age of reproduction) thanks to modern medicine allowed - if they marry and each have 5 chidren - 5 x 5 or 25 to be reproduced. And those 25 that made it to fecundity gave us 5 x 25 or 125 fecund adults in 3 generations. In the pre-health/sanitation/medicine past 5 kids (and often more) led to 1 fecund adult...who had 5 (or more) kids, 1 of whom led to a fecund adult...who had 5 kids who led to 1 fecund adult. Or 1 fecund adult in 3 generations. (or in the case of Ms Fecund, in the image; 16 future baby makers). So you can say that our growth is because of the success of "death control" - or public health, and medicine. It's now the obligation of public health, world medicine researchers, and wise leaders to make "birth control" that's safe and effective for both sexes...not just women. Otherwise we're doomed.
I think this is a most notable achievement. So I must share. [yahoo.com]

Good idea to go work with Amazon...but expect high demands. Don't fear these pro-freedom folk. They will actually be actively lowering their own numbers...which might be good for America.

Robecology comments on May 12, 2020:
It is stressful. I have no doubt that it's an age inducing or age-accelerating factor. It is a tougher, more challenging thing - to live in the same home with any other adult. Even more so if you're involved in raising children. But it's a challenge that I met for at least 3 decades in my life. Now it's just me...and I'm so much F'ing happier that way!

Robecology comments on May 12, 2020:
Old friendships form in our youth...two consistent ones that have lasted decades for me had to do with the male "hunt" for female relationships....it's a bonding that's strong, and long lasting....long after the women in our lives have died or become "history". Caveat...this is my opinion. Therefore making friends today is much different. Making friends of the opposite sex is still more of a challenge (for me at least, and IMO for most) simply because there's that "relationship possibility" factoring in...can we/should we be friends "with benefits"? Again, In My Opinion. (IMO). This seems to be a question that's on the mind of most - dare I say all? - opposite sex friendships. Again; this is just IMO...I don't want to debate what I feel strongly is real.
Definition: weed vs wildflower. I can't really tell the difference. 😎🍷
Robecology comments on May 12, 2020:
The definitions are not based on the Phenotype (its physical appearance) but by its' growth relevant to the gardening practices of us H. sapiens. A weed is an unwanted wild growth in any of our places of cultivation. A wildflower could be the same exact plant - NOT growing in our "gardens" or "farms" (cultivated places)

Robecology comments on May 12, 2020:

How much longer do you guys in USA have to put up with this nonsense?
Robecology comments on May 12, 2020:
It isn't quite "nonsense"....but it is dangerously absurd. Trump's obviously failing, and losing it. Today at 10 AM is a historic review by the Supreme Court about the legality of Trump hiding his taxes...and if the S.C. stays true to its' decision against Nixon...we should be able to finally see the corruption. But the SC is now loaded in his favor. To put it in Godfather lingo..."he has the judges in his pocket"...so this will be interesting...and maybe - even - nonsensical.

What archaeologists need to consider doing is sharing the age-dating techniques. Right now the techniques are very unknown. I've said this often, and suggested it to friends in archeology; if they discover a simplified, in-the-field or obvious age-dating device, or tool...it could be the end of organized religion's criticism of evolution. I challenge inventors, once again; get busy - and get rich - this is a crucial - urgently needed - tool for archaeologists.

When we created the school funding to allow locals to vote on property taxes and gambling income as a means of supporting education, that's when we took an intentional turn to get rich and lower educational standards. We are now paying that price in many ways - from excessive elderly and minority deaths to becoming a third rate economic world power. I hope we figure out and fix this lethal connection...or we are doomed to face the same fade-out as the Roman and Mesopotamian civilization.

Robecology comments on May 11, 2020:
I'm always disappointed to read that there are some wealthy and wise scientists still seeking to create fusion reactions. I think it will end up like our naive desire to use fission for energy....abandoned. The sooner the better. We have a self-actuating fusion energy source very safely 93 million miles - 8 light minutes - away. We don't need to produce fusion here on earth. I think it's a dangerous mis-direction of funds and wisdom.

I vacationed in the D.R. for a week. They are a struggling nation. Some good features, but many not so good. The do share the same Island with Haiti...so they are at least respecting the strategies of avoiding environmental degradation and overpopulation more than the Haitians do. They're almost entirely dark-skinned African-D.R.folk. They have unique gemstones available there called "Larimar" which is a light blue stone; unfortunately it's commonly set in silver, rarely in gold. They have a decent highway system. The main roads are well maintained. They have a least one beautiful cave system on the south coast to explore. Their shores are pretty...and the little isolated "resort" communities stand alone from the sad, poorly organized communities in the neighborhoods.

Are there any women out there who've chosen to NOT be mothers? I salute you. You are a "mom" to the nieces and nephews, the youngsters in your life that are "not yours" Mother's day is a day to salute women who've chosen to be moms. Either by adoption, or by giving birth. I miss my mom...and know she did a lot to make me who I am....and I salute her... And I wouldn't have my son if it weren't for "his mom" - so I send her a thanks, as well. But here's a salute to the "un-moms"... those who have chosen to be child-less... some call it being "child-free"... .women who are or were fertile - but chose to use birth control .and/or abstain from sex and/or put it on their partner not to impregnate her. So to the "mom-less" women who are happy being child-free - be aware; you are doing a great service to humanity by keeping the numbers down... So I salute you!

Robecology comments on May 7, 2020:
I watched an interview, back in the 80's (I believe) with Jacques Costeau and Fidel Castro...and developed a better understanding of "Communist censorship". Costeau was being his usual diplomatic self, when he asked Fidel "why do you like to have such a strong "grip" on the decisions of your people"....and Fidel's answer floored me.... The people are my children. They are not so well "disciplined" so I need to be "fatherly" to them. Simple, logical. It frightened me with the sense it made. I found the video...go to the 25 minute segment to see the discussion Costeau had with Castro to get their exact words and tones. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTlBR5EiKNQ

Robecology comments on May 7, 2020:
Starlings are prodigious...but aggressive. It's a good thing they like to eat pest insects...because they also have a habit of chasing away shyer, less aggressive species... All the European Starlings in North America descended from 100 birds set loose in New York's Central Park in the early 1890s. The birds were intentionally released by a group who wanted America to have all the birds that Shakespeare ever mentioned. Most American birders have little respect for them... Here's that star diagram you're referring to...

Forbes is becoming "sensationalist". This might be true of many outspoken Americans....but it isn't true of the rest of the world. (see the link, below, for data). What we have is a post war population boom. The **deaths** from wars and crime **are declining**. Not dramatically...but steadily. T**here's more people employed.** The **average worker salary is going up.** The situation in America is unique. Big business (i.e. the wealthy of America) saw the tightening economy coming when they "went overseas for cheap labor" and the government not only didn't stop them....it gave them "loopholes" and subtle incentives. So...in general; -the world economy is stagnating...but not declining. -more are employed than ever -there's less starvation and better distribution of food than ever. -Americans are getting fatter and lazier...while the rest of the world is catching up. and all nations - except Americans...are living longer. (see graph) But having said that - the rich are getting richer. The poor are getting poorer. We are suffering economic class separation. ...and when I googled it (I noticed that the spelling seemed odd) I found out that there's two different Jiu Jitsu's...a Ju Jitsu not to be confused with Jiu Jitsu!! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jujutsu https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazilian_jiu-jitsu
I need some general advice.
Robecology comments on May 5, 2020:
Thank you all. To Herb; yes; point taken...this might be a bad time to buy any properties for investment...the prices could drop further. This place went on the market last September at over $200k...and they sold to me for $160k. I might get stuck with an empty home for a while...but the population is still growing...and this home is a budget price compared to others in this community. My question to Roy; good point about the logic of this loan outlasting me...but does that mean that those who follow me will be indebted to pay it off? Question to Ann; I so wanted to go with my C.U....but the loan officer kept making errors....I'm just not comfortable with her comments and "dropping the ball" (she literally told me "no loan" because CU's dont' do investment loans. I had to call her up to ask alternatives). She never told me about the "no need to even pay back" feature... To Paula; I concur about the need for low monthly payments...15 year loan = near $1000 a month. 30 year = $600 a month. Good suggestion. To Eric; I love the Condo I'm in now. I had my eye on Condos within my development (Ocean Village - OV) and no 2-2's were offered until this one - so they took my low offer (above) and now I'm about to get a loan for it. So to your observation...I concur; we are heading towards a depression. I might end up paying a mtg on a home that goes unrented for a while. It's a risky business...but the lady -friend also might buy in to it to move closer to me...she's 120 miles south...but has a very good job that's actually paying her now...to stay home. But good points. Thanks.

Robecology comments on May 4, 2020:
There is absolutely no logic to the theory that an alien E.T. would travel light-years (which even if a clone or robot could go 1/1000 the speed of light that would be 186,000 miles per hour; That's 51.67 miles per second). And with the nearest star being 4.5 LY away; that would mean, even at that incredible speed...they would take 4,500 years to get here. Let's assume they figured out how to travel the speed of light. That's still 4.5 years...from the nearest star to earth. And scientists now suggest that the nearest planet that might have harbored any life at all (described as 'Earth like") is 80 LY away. That implies that if they had left their planet in 1940, in June....they are still not here yet...and that's going the speed of light. (186,000 miles per second). So Let's give up the consideration that there's ET's visiting us? It would be far smarter for them to call first. And even a call from the 80 LY away "earth-like" planet...if it started in 1940...won't be here yet. And it would take us 80 years to send them back a message....so...if we heard that they said "hi" in a few weeks...and we said "hi" back....they wouldn't get the message until the year 2100. Watch the movie "Contact" to see the most logical way any alien race would even contact us to begin with. It assumes that the "Einstein-Rosen-bridge" or "wormhole" theory is correct....and we have no way to test that. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wormhole https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRoj3jK37Vc

Robecology comments on May 3, 2020:

I moved to a Condo in '15....and the thing i missed most was my involvement with plants. ) I gardened often at the old home...(1st pic of me gardening...sorry it's rotated incorrectly). so I was sorely missing my hands in the soil....so to speak. (2nd pic of my feeble attempt at growing orchids). I eventually found two gardens that welcomed volunteers; a local "commemorative" garden (3rd image) with all sorts of named and dedicated walkway stones...and a public "Botanical Garden" about 15 minutes from my home. Thirst quenched. Hey Agnostic #Admin... what's with the poor rotation of the images? None are like that in my album!

Robecology comments on May 1, 2020:
What do you mean "we"? There's all sorts of folk out there - the ones who seem to sacrifice the sanity and morality seem far more like Trump supporters than Trump haters. The eloquence, the wisdom, the sophistication of Obama made us proud - even those who harbored some racial biases - to have such an articulate, considerate president. This person who holds the office now - what a sad, sorry example of an allegedly rich person. The point of getting rid of Trump is to get someone in the office with wisdom, maturity, and honesty. Trump's obviously lacking in those features.

I've been a user...never an abuser....up until just a few years ago...and I started in the mid 60's fresh out of college. I quit for two reasons; #1; When you are young - it's OK to be ravenously hungry and unforgiveably, foolishly forgetful. When you're older...it's called Obesity and Dimentia. The fun just went away. #2. Blood pressure and pulse changes. I'm now on two different blood pressure meds...and one time when stoned I took my BP...then retook it...then took it again...and that did it for me.

The last paragraph in the article is so important; "The path is clear. The way to defeat Trump is to raise turnout among traditional non-voters. To do that, Democrats not only have to fight for mail-in ballots but also articulate an affirmative vision for the future that speaks to the needs of working class people of all races."
