Kurt wasn't just a good writer; he might be considered one of the best writers in modern history. Vonnegut had been writing about his war experiences at Dresden ever since he returned from the war, but had never been able to write anything acceptable to himself or his publishers—Chapter 1 of Slaughterhouse-Five tells of his difficulties. Released in 1969, the novel rocketed Vonnegut to fame. It tells of the life of Billy Pilgrim, who like Vonnegut was born in 1922 and survives the bombing of Dresden. The story is told in a non-linear fashion, with many of the story's climaxes—Billy's death in 1976, his kidnapping by aliens from the planet Tralfamadore nine years earlier, and the execution of Billy's friend Edgar Derby in the ashes of Dresden for stealing a teapot—disclosed in the story's first pages. In 1970, he was also a correspondent in Biafra during the Nigerian Civil War. Slaughterhouse-Five received generally positive reviews, with Michael Crichton writing in The New Republic, "he writes about the most excruciatingly painful things. His novels have attacked our deepest fears of automation and the bomb, our deepest political guilts, our fiercest hatreds and loves. No one else writes books on these subjects; they are inaccessible to normal novelists." The book went immediately to the top of The New York Times Best Seller list. Vonnegut's earlier works had appealed strongly to many college students, and the antiwar message of Slaughterhouse-Five resonated with a generation marked by the Vietnam War. He later stated that the loss of confidence in government that Vietnam caused finally allowed for an honest conversation regarding events like Dresden. If you have some time; this study of Vonnegut, is, in itself...a great story. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kurt_Vonnegut

China tried - with mixed results - to enforce the 1-child limits. They had limited success. The greater promise is education; yes; the world is getting smarter....and the wiser are catching on to the cost to raise a child - both financial and emotional. So the population growth curve is not growing as it was decades ago...but it's still growing. Developed nations like growth. All DN's have tax incentives for larger families. And the UDN (under-developed nations) are going through what us demographers call a "Demographic transition". The big question is will we transition to end fossil fuels, mitigate climate change, and slow the growth in time to prevent a catastrophic collapse? Remember this little simple observation, made by Thomas R. Malthus - the father of Demography made in 1812 - over 200 years ago; "As the quantity of life (in any given area) increases, the quality of life decreases". He made this comment in one of his papers criticizing London's growth - and the world was just turning 1 billion when he wrote this. Today we are a 7.7 billion, and increasing (births minus deaths) at the rate of 158 per minute, 227,000 per day, 1.59 million per week) https://www.worldometers.info http://www.bitsofscience.org/21st-century-forecasts-for-sea-level-rise-and-world-population-growth-7279/

BTW, Ed, Happy 50th anniversary of Earth Day; Today, April 22, 2020. And as an ecologist who's also constantly challenged with weight maintenance, I have a bone to pick with you. - - - - - I love your devotion to B.O. - but I can't concur with your comment " Each person who changes their diet to vegan does about the same to combat climate change as driving an electric vehicle." Driving an EV is far more helpful to the environment than going vegan. The whole animal farming industry adds as low as 5% and as high as 10% of G.W. gases...compared to 50-55% for gas driven vehicles. Driving a I.C.E.(internal combustion engine) car produces pounds of CO2 per mile....changing to an EV saves thousands of pounds per year of this gas going in to the atmosphere. And even if the EV is powered by central power (Coal 25-30% Petrol 55-60% Wind, hydro, nuclear 10-20%) it's still 100% more efficient than individual cars. Does going vegan make you healthier? No doubt. Is it better for the environment? of Course. but it's not the same as driving an EV. And neither have much of an effect on the environment. "Going vegetarian actually is quite difficult: One large U.S. survey indicates that 84% of people fail, most of them in less than a year. But a systematic peer-reviewed study has shown that, even if they succeed, their vegetarian diets reduce individual CO2 emissions by the equivalent of 540 kilos — or just 4.3% of the emissions of the average inhabitant of a developed country. Furthermore, there is a “rebound effect,” as money saved on cheaper vegetarian food is spent on goods and services that cause additional greenhouse-gas emissions. Once we account for this, going entirely vegetarian reduces a person’s total emissions by only 2%". https://www.marketwatch.com/story/your-electric-car-and-vegetarian-diet-are-pointless-virtue-signalling-in-fighting-climate-change-2019-12-26

Recently learned an interesting theory about "comets" - They're mostly H2O ice - and there's this theory that they came from other solar systems that had oceans...that - when the planet "exploded" the oceans were "freeze dried"...and sent off in to space...to be captured by other solar systems. No wonder scientists want to not only "land" on them but "drill in" to them. Imagine finding organic remains? Our life might have come from other solar systems...

Asking for zingers gets them excited...keeps them "in the game". Best bet...just ignore them...unless you like the attention...which is kind of obvious that you do.
Way Down South, written by Edgar Winter and performed by The Fabulous Thunderbirds from the opening ...

Here's the lyrics; Any interpretations? I got nothing... Today, and tomorrow, and yesterday, too The flowers are dyin' like all things do Follow me close, I’m going to Bally-na-Lee I'll lose my mind if you don't come with me I fuss with my hair, and I fight blood feuds I contain multitudes Got a tell-tale heart like Mr. Poe Got skeletons in the walls of people you know I’ll drink to the truth and the things we said I'll drink to the man that shares your bed I paint landscapes, and I paint nudes I contain multitudes A red Cadillac and a black mustache Rings on my fingers that sparkle and flash Tell me, what's next? What shall we do? Half my soul, baby, belongs to you I rollick and I frolic with all the young dudes I contain multitudes I'm just like Anne Frank, like Indiana Jones And them British bad boys, The Rolling Stones I go right to the edge, I go right to the end I go right where all things lost are made good again I sing the songs of experience like William Blake I have no apologies to make Everything's flowing all at the same time I live on a boulevard of crime I drive fast cars, and I eat fast foods I contain multitudes Pink pedal-pushers, red blue jeans All the pretty maids, and all the old queens All the old queens from all my past lives I carry four pistols and two large knives I'm a man of contradictions, I'm a man of many moods I contain multitudes You greedy old wolf, I'll show you my heart But not all of it, only the hateful part I’ll sell you down the river, I’ll put a price on your head What more can I tell you? I sleep with life and death in the same bed Get lost, madame, get up off my knee Keep your mouth away from me I'll keep the path open, the path in my mind I’ll see to it that there's no love left behind I'll play Beethoven's sonatas, and Chopin’s preludes I contain multitudes

Happy Friday! It's payday and time to pay the bills! What bills do you resent having to pay?
Robecology comments on Apr 17, 2020:
I just drove nearly an hour and paid $40 to get a blood test; the receptionist told me to contact my insurer; that I could get the same tests done closer to home and at a lower - or no - cost to me. WTF? Why do I have to go to the office to find this out? Not happy. Can't wait until November; I sooooo hope we create a better, fairer, wiser health system in our nation.
💪💪💪 Rocking the pose...
Robecology comments on Apr 17, 2020:
That's not an easy pose to hold, either. It's a tougher-to-hold pose for more advanced students...called the "Boat pose" or Navasana...

I tried going to the site; hit real quick and far too often with click-bait junk. Perhaps go to the source and copy and past it here?
I wonder what Carlin would say about all this

I didn’t know that
Robecology comments on Apr 16, 2020:
In my biblical research days I discovered something interesting about the above visualized event; only 1 person was alleged to have "witnessed" Jesus leaving his tomb. Can you guess who it was? Mary Magdaline....his alleged wife. But because she was a woman she wasn't allowed to write it in any scriptures. It was John, who, decades later, after having spoken with Mary, wrote down her account. Sexism was alive and well back then; still is strong in the "church" today. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Magdalene
So I've tried again to make a video.
