Who will be in charge of creating the voting tests? Who will determine whether a person passes or fails? How will you prevent whoever is in charge from giving the right to vote to friends and allies while restricting it to those in opposition? How will you prevent wealthy people from buying it rather than earning it? Will the people not allowed to vote still have to pay taxes. If so, what will you do when the "no taxation without representation" rallying cry returns? If the tests are mandatory, what will you do with the people who refuse to take them? How will you prevent the people who do have the ability to vote from awarding themselves further privileges and relegating the rest to 2nd class citizen status?

It's like how the republicans say it's not the time to talk about gun control after a mass shooting. No, now is the best time. Your corporatist neoliberal warmonger lost to a despicable game show host. Is there a better time to change tactics? It makes me think that the true function of the democratic party is just to suck the life out of the left wing labor movement so that conservative policies can thrive.

Bernie vs.
RoboGraham comments on Mar 5, 2020:
I think you are totally correct. Here's why I almost definitely won't vote for Biden. Even if most of us Berners show up for Biden, as we did for Hillary, he still won't win because he does not inspire the high turnout needed to overcome the lopsided representation of the electoral college. So the scenario would be that I degrade myself, compromise my integrity and morality by voting for the guy who wrote the crime bill, the guy who enthusiastically supported the Iraq disaster, the guy who is very loose with the truth talking about getting arrested to see Mandela, (completely false) the guy who is clearly in cognitive decline, and still we will lose. The result will be more Trump regardless of how I vote so I won't do it. If something changes between now and then and it seems that there is a real chance he could win, I'll vote for him but as it is, no can do. It's not worth the slap in the face to my dignity if there is no chance it will change anything anyway.

[theweek.com] The strongest case for Joe Biden. What do our Leftists think?
RoboGraham comments on Jan 20, 2020:
So to sum it up, Biden will make Congress function again through compromise and bipartisanship. There are some issues with this line of thinking. 1st) We can reflect on the Obama years to see how well attempting to compromise with the republicans works. I can't think of any examples in which the republicans compromised on anything very important. They fought him tooth and nail. Their mission was to deny him any success. It will be the same for Biden. 2nd) Assuming the republicans will compromise and participate in bipartisanship, will that be good enough? We need to reverse the damage done by Trump, address the climate crises, reform our dysfunctional healthcare system, deal with the debt bubble, raise the minimum wage, end the never ending wars, get money out of politics and fight on many other issues. I can't imagine Biden accomplishing any of this. The republicans are even more emboldened now than they were before. They will not allow a president Biden to accomplish anything worthwhile. 3rd) Having Biden on the ticket will suppress the democratic vote which will mean that democrats will win fewer down ballot races. Joe Biden is not inspirational. No one is excited about him. He is another establishment centrist who will not turn out the progressive base with any real enthusiasm other than just the need to beat Trump. Just as with Hillary, young people and typical non-voters won't bother with Biden. The attempt to appeal to people on the center right will not attract many voters and it will mean that many on the left won't vote for democrats. It will be a repeat of 2016. Even if Biden does manage to win, He will not have majorities in Congress to work with so the gridlock in Washington will continue. On the other hand, there is a progressive candidate who has inspired massive motivation in millions of people, particularly young people who we need desperately. His policies have a great deal of support even with people outside the democratic party. Like Trump, He is a populist. He is very appealing to the downtrodden and the working class. He is promising real systemic change. He will not only remove Trump but fix the broken system that gave us Trump. He will have enough momentum to force Congress to cooperate with him because his movement is gaining enormous grass roots traction. He is shattering fund raising records and it's all coming from regular people who believe in him. We can trust him to fight for the people rather than the corporations and special interest because he has been doing it all his life and he does not take their bribes. He is funded by us, he will fight for us and the legislators who attempt to stand in his way will face massive pressure from their constituents to get onboard with his policies because they are ...

How do we get atheism/nonreligion to influence politics
RoboGraham comments on Dec 30, 2017:
Theist have the advantage of meeting with like minded people in there communities on a weekly basis. This gives their leaders ample opportunity to rile them up by preaching about all the bad stuff going on in the world and then tell them what they must do to fix. So they get onto the same page and work together. Perhaps we need to dedicate 1 day a week to meeting at some sort of secularist church. Or just put time and energy into groups like these to accomplish the same ends.
An older video of Gov. Matt Bevin speaking on gun control.Still very relevant today. [youtu.be]
RoboGraham comments on Nov 12, 2019:
This is a weak argument he is using. People have been doing bad things for a long time therefore there is nothing to be done about it? That's some inspiring leadership there. Sorry dozens of people are dead, what can you do? Sure laws against murder didn't stop this but laws preventing people from owning arsenals of automatic weapons may have. I'm 100% in favor of the second amendment but when crowds of people are being mowed down, it's time to put some sensible restrictions in place.
What movies do you find inspirational as an atheist/agnositc?
RoboGraham comments on Dec 31, 2017:
My favorite movie of all time is I Heart Huckabees. It's not so much agnostic but very philosophical and existential in particular. By far one of the most thought provoking films I've seen and I've seen a lot. It's also incredibly funny. They mix a combination of very heavy philosophical ideas with some outrageous characters brilliantly and the result is pure comedy gold. I have watched I Heart Huckabees with people who don't do much thinking outside the box and they are generally left bored, confused and frustrated with it, so It's not for everyone but I'd say most people on here would understand it and get a kick out of it.
