He has nothing to offer but money. That won't work. A candidate needs a message, something to offer the voters. Mike has nothing but money. We tried a flawed centrist last time. It was colossal disaster. This time will be worse. The only way to beat Trump is to run a true populist. Someone who can get the working class in the rust belt to shift back over to the democrats. Someone to energize the youth and encourage non-voters to vote for a change. That someone is Bernie Sanders because he has something significant to offer, something beyond personal wealth and being slightly less horrible than Trump.

A democratic socialist winning a presidential election will mean that the neoliberal stranglehold on power is finally broken. We already have social democracy in this country, Bernie just wants to extend it. His model is Keynesian, in the same vain as FDR. Here's how it works. Markets are free but regulated. There is meritocracy and people are able to use their hard work, talents, and wealth to gain wealth. The tax rate goes up the more wealth that a person makes to prevent extreme income inequality and that wealth is invested in the society. Everyone benefits from universal healthcare, public transportation, universal education, subsidized housing etc... This allows the people at the bottom a chance to get ahead and cuts down on the poverty rate. Government spending stimulates economic development and a healthy productive society is the result. To lump Bernie in with the Stalins, Castros and Maos of the world is just ignorant. Those were authoritarian communist dictatorships while Bernie is proposing something totally different from that and much more akin to the Nordic model which has worked so well for Scandinavia. It is a conservative idea, to go back to the economic model that led to the fastest growth the country has ever seen. The country was extremely prosperous following the New Deal. Although taxes were high for large earners, GDP increased rapidly and the middle class grew and became wealthy. Poverty rates dropped along with income inequality. Now we are living under Reaganomics and the false idea that wealth trickles down. When at the top, wealth stays at the top. When it is invested in the society for the common good, it trickles up. It's no wonder why there are so many homeless people today. So many who can't afford healthcare. Life expectancy is declining, suicide rates are increasing, wealth inequality is sky rocketing, student loan debt is ballooning, minimum wage and wages generally are stagnant... Many people in my generation can't make enough money to buy a home and start a family. The American Dream is dead for millions of us. Both parents must work full time to afford housing and two cars but day care and healthcare is so expensive that it just isn't feasible. @rainmanjr There are some issues with Bloomberg. He has so little grassroots support that he did not meet the minimum individual donor requirement to get on the debate stage. He donated some large sums of money to the DNC and wouldn't ya know it, the rules have changed. We call that plutocracy. He was a republican mayor. He has donated to republican candidates as recently as 2018. He endorsed George Bush for cryin out load. He oversaw a policy which allowed police to detain people at random. It was of course used for racial profiling and Bloomberg himself has said that they specifically targeted young black and brown males. Even if you set aside the racism, just the fact that he was encouraging a policy that allowed people to be stopped and searched unconstitutionally is an affront to freedom. it is unamerican. Trump's promises about bring back the coal industry and keeping the immigrants out so they can't take your job was a big part of his appeal there. Many people are racist. And that racism comes out the strongest when they are struggling economically. Demagogues are able to to blame scapegoats for that economic pain and use it it to their advantage. If those people weren't struggling, they would be less likely to fall for those despicable tactics. I'd imagine it's the same in the UK. You guys went from having a mighty empire and dominating the world to struggling to recover after the crash of 08 in a relatively short period of time. He has been advocating for radical political policies for decades and many of those policies are now in the mainstream, thanks in part, to his words. @fishline79 Trump won because he ran as a populist who appealed to the working class and promised to bring back jobs. Trump is a faux-populist of course, he is actually a plutocrat. Bernie is an authentic true populist. He has been fighting for the working class all his adult life and Trump can see that people who voted for him in 16 because they were hurting economically, will switch to Bernie now because his policies haven't done them any good. He understands that Bernie's proposals are very popular with people in the rust belt. He can't run the same campaign as he did against Hillary because Bernie is opposed to the trade deals and the wars that are hurting poor people. Trump is politically savvy enough to see that his only real competition from the democrats is the guy who is promising to help the working class as he did but failed to follow through on.

You are confusing Democratic Socialism with Social Democracies. Democratic Socialists aren't capitalists. Also, roads, police, fire Departments, etc. aren't exclusive to socialist societies.

@MichaelSpinler I believe we need a new term to refer to the social democracy ideology. Socialism has a lot of baggage and it's not even accurate for what we are trying to describe. Socialism is a system in which the government owns the means of production and controls the distribution of goods and services. That is not what Bernie is about. We want a mixed economy that provides more for the greater good by taxing the wealthy and a reduction of wealth inequality. The best word I can think of to describe it is Keynesian.
