My direction in life -- to live well and die happy -- whenever that may come.
I enjoy good company, a little wine, whisky or beer, decent food and whenever possible, sunshine.
Hobbies are walking and talking with my dog , reading, contemplating the philosophy of life, relaxing on my boat, deep sea fishing and deciding if I have enough 'stuff' to write a novel.

Does anyone here worry or care about the ripples their actions make, or are you more of a boulder ...
ShadowAmicus comments on Jul 17, 2019:
Some of my actions and inactions from the past are the reason I still occasionally wake up screaming... maybe I could and should have done more, on occasion I should have walked away - worry and care about my actions? - yes, every day

For you, what makes a place homey?
ShadowAmicus comments on Jul 17, 2019:
When I was laying in a hospital bed, an 18 year old broken and maybe beyond repair I listened to 4 CDs time after time. Pink Floyds Dark Side of the Moon has a line Home, home again, I like to be there when I can and when I come home cold and tired It's good to warm my bones beside the fire Every place I have lived had an open fire, with a comfy chair beside it to relax in and be warmed added to that a thick rug, for my dogs to lay on around that chair. I have an extensive library, an expensive, now shrinking, art collection, kept a sizable cellar - but that chair beside the fire surrounded by my dogs is what defined HOME

I had three days fishing last week. Day 1 on a boat and caught a lot of small stuff to throw back, a 4lb cod and a 8lb ling - enough to make a couple of family size fish pies. Day2 on the beach - caught a 2lb sea bream - put back till it became a grand daddy Day 3 - back to the same beach - no fish, but a tan Fishing is not all about fish - I had 3 great days with a close friend, sharing sandwiches, coffee and most importantly time - we chatted, probably for no more than a few hours over the three days, but much more was said than was spoken.

ShadowAmicus comments on Jul 16, 2019:
For queries below - the benefits of 3 years work as a bricklayer and a degree in ceramics - The bricks with music would be hand made - a flat surface of soft clay then hand carved with that music. The colour difference - that clay may be completely different to the mass produced bricks, or fired at a different temperature. The different pointing around the music bricks may indicate that the original standard bricks were removed and replaced by these - but could simply be that there is efflorescence from the music bricks. Lovely feature in the wall

The military machine is a cash cow for big business and fuels wars in its own self interest.... the spending could be used to much better effect, improving the lives of all americans, and possibly other countries too. Imposing western values and ethics onto other countries with their own civilisation, often of much longer standing than the USA, is wrong .. and foolhardy. Fixing their home country is exactly what some exiles / refugees want to do - but they have no means, often no idea, of how to do it. Some simply want to leave that country behind and make a new life elsewhere. There has always been tension between immigrants and indiginous populations. ShadowAmicus comments on Jul 14, 2019:
I have friends and acquaintances around the world who followtheir god, under whatever religious banner they choose - me being agnostic does not prevent friendship, rather the opposite. Almost every religion is based on a moral and social code and there are massive overlaps of moral values between these religions and my own views - the basics like not killing, not stealing, helping others, etc.- and some religious ideas I disbelieve like sex, particularly homosexuality, or with a neighbours wife is a sin. My friends and I often talk directly, or by messaging, about moral and philosophical questions and debate possible actions that could be taken to improve parts of the world. They, for the most part, agree that it is not necessary to follow a god to be a 'good' person, as I have come to accept that the teaching of moral values to children can not always be left to parents and is easier for society in general to instill such values if there is a standard bearer / religion to follow. Our only difference is that they are certain a supreme being exists and I do not - but lacking evidence either way I acknowledge there may be (in the same way that we have not yet found a goatherder on the moon - but there may be one) It is judgmental, chauvinistic and frankly stupid, to cut out of your life any person simply because they hold religious views ... better to talk, acknowledge the differences and celebrate the points of agreement.

In England, up to the sixties, it was very common for an extended family of grandparents to great grandchildren to live in the same village, within easy walking distance and often only a few houses apart. Then, such close family relationships were very common and many family members would meet in a local pub (bar). It is only with better education, greater freedom of travel through car ownership and young adults traveling / moving to other areas for university education and higher paid or more interesting work that has broken down the closer family bonds. We now have many elderly people alone in their homes and having few, if any, visitors, and so many young people with mental health issues now; back then there was a family networkm an inbuilt support system always someone to help the elderly, always someone to listen and talk issues through - . I am not saying things were better then, simply that things have changed, with some benefits, but much has been lost.

You first have to decide what is 'better distribution of wealth' If it is to take money from some and give it to others - how do you justify it and how do you do it? You can not place a high tax burden on the wealthy, because the wealthy can move abroad and many will, reducing tax revenue overall Does someone who does not work have a right to be financially supported by his neighbour who is struggling with 2 jobs? Education should give everyone the skills to enable them to make a path in life - after that you choos which path and find your way through it The question steps into a quagmire of moral and philosophical issues
