I always thought industrialisation started with Abraham Derby at Ironbridge in Shropshire. Hitler started as a saviour of Germany, introducing motorways to the world, railways that ran efficiently and virtually full employment across the country. Many people across the world saw what Hitler was doing as a model for all to follow - up until 1939 ... makes you wonder doesn't it.

History is written by the winners - and the social climate of the world hasbeen, maybe still is, male dominated. I have been with hunters in Borneo and they do what is needed to live and enjoy 'being' - but they say there are times when food is scarce and living is hard work. The happiest children I have met were in the slums of Bombay (now Mumbai) - they have virtually nothing, they live with very limited food, no clean water or sanitation but play together and have broad smiles all day .. their parents have seen tv shows from the west and want to own their own tv, cooker, microwave, etc and it leaves them feeling deprived. Lot to be said for if you dont know about it - you dont miss it ...... and yes, it is not funny.

Seriously you are not asking the correct question. Let me propose a way forward. 1. The national armies all around the world are steadily demobilised 2. each country is allowed a military of 0.5% of population, spend limited to 0.5% of GDP, to be used for civil support (emergencies such as floods guarding civil buildings and monuments, etc) 3. civilian armaments are banned apart from very limited access through a system such as Japan now has. 4. A world army, set up from volunteers from all countries to do what the UN peacekeepers do now - but do it effectively 5. Inter and intra country disagreements to be settled by negotiation. 6 Violence - inter or intra countries will not be tolerated and the world army will step in to prevent it through overwhelming force 7 armaments manufacture around the world will be stopped - a few well controlled factories will supply the limited military forces around the world with small arms only - world army only allowed greater military strength 8. The world army should be needed for only a few decades - till military violence is deemed abhorrent Problems - who and what system controls the world army. who controls negotiation and arbitration and of course - how do you get humans to co-operate to gain peace.

I don't mind the nights without sleep .. but I do badly when laid awake without my thoughts being under control and directed to some purpose. The walk was, as always, beautiful.

ShadowAmicus replies on Feb 17, 2019:
I live about a quarter mile from neighbours and there is plenty of wildlife on my doorstep...a few months ago 2 adolescent foxes would come each night and play in a pile of building sand just 20 feet from my window ,, they would only stay a few minutes to half an hour or so, but a beautiful break from the world when watching them. They stopped coming and I hope they simply moved on, but it is a dangerous world for foxes and they may be dead.

ShadowAmicus replies on Feb 16, 2019:
@RavenCT Am unsure why you specify workplace in your argument. We can at any time discuss menstruation and occasionally it does come into conversations .. personally I see no real reason for it being hidden. I remember as a teenager we would have some fairly wild weekends fuelled by alcohol drugs music and sex; the string of a tampon was a moderately regular sight and no-one seemed bothered by it. It is only the loss of a small amount of blood and a tangle of hormones - I know there is a lot of stigma and prejudice, but that only applies if you allow sociological norms to impinge on your personal views and actions. (as with so many areas of social interaction)

@Jnei Excerpt from a government briefing - looked this up as the subject came up in discussion today. 'The Government included provision in the Finance Bill 2016 to allow for sanitary protection to be zero-rated, once the UK had discretion to do this.[6] When debated in Committee Treasury Minister David Gauke said that the Government anticipated the zero rate being in place by 1 April 2017,[7] but as yet the Government have been unable to give a definitive date in the absence of any amendment in the EU VAT rules.' see the whole uk history at https://researchbriefings.parliament.uk/ResearchBriefing/Summary/SN01128 So - the government have planned to zero rate VAT on sanitary products (and condoms I think) but implementation awaits an EU decision.

@NickNakorn You actually said 'Genesis, not that I've read it' , but you were taught the stories as a child... whether this is an adequate knowledge to judge christianity is irrelevant. The point I make is that to reject an idea without knowledge of it is the basis of bigotry. In terms of 'enemy' ; I fear baptists and other fundamental religious groups such as the Taliban to an equal degree .. they would all lead the world to war for their 'god'. (as would capitalists - when it can show a profit) When such dangers exist they become my enemy.
