My direction in life -- to live well and die happy -- whenever that may come.
I enjoy good company, a little wine, whisky or beer, decent food and whenever possible, sunshine.
Hobbies are walking and talking with my dog , reading, contemplating the philosophy of life, relaxing on my boat, deep sea fishing and deciding if I have enough 'stuff' to write a novel.

In Praise of Farmers Markets
ShadowAmicus comments on Jul 27, 2019:
Farmers markets in England never seem to have farmers selling - most stalls are normal market sellers who push up the price because buyers are generally wealthy middle class wanting 'real' food. But we have a network of small growers of fruit, veg, flowers, eggs, poultry, sheep, pigs, milk, cows - all at a reasonable price....generally a swap for my fish, venison, rabbits, or even looking after their dog or cat. I went to a very real weekly farmers market in cuba - big trucks arrive in the early morning holding several tons of produce - the back of the truck is lifted and people pick direct from the truck and pay the driver

ShadowAmicus comments on Jul 26, 2019:
I do not believe in a god, but accept the concept has a useful role in society.... 'God' as in a group of men back in around ad400 put together a book collection that gives general guidance on what to do and more often, what not to do (killing people, stealing, fucking neighbours wife, etc) - these are a reasonable basis for social living - and backed up by the mystical post mortem hell ensures most people adhere to the programme..... I am uncertain of what society could install to take over that role - a general idea of being moral and ethical does not appear to be a powerful enough driver to ensure compliance - and we have all seen how low social norms can fall, yet still be accepted.

If he is openly homophobic, lesbophobic, paedophobic, fat person phobic or whatever. I would say he has a right to his belief and a right to write it .... and others have a right to disagree and write their own comments. It is how civilised society conducts itself - the problems start when someone decides violence is a better way of promulgating their view than text or speech. It is quite probable that almost everything anyone writes on the internet, says on a phone, or in certain cases speaks directly to another person can be analysed by a government agency But no-one, whether it be an individual, social group, or government, has a right to prevent people holding a viewpoint and expressing that view through text or speech.

Why Don’t Police Catch Serial Rapists? - The Atlantic
ShadowAmicus comments on Jul 18, 2019:
I have argued for many years that the police should make greater use of forensic technology in documenting crime - Rape is a special case, but all crimes have victims. Fingerprinting, palm prints DNA, everything that identifies an individual should be collected, collated in one database and referenced every time someone new is added to the list. This may not immediately solving a case, but documenting who did it on the basis that sooner or later, like turds, they will float to the surface will produce convictions. Currently crime pays and perpretators will probably get away with it - if people find criminals are being caught at any time, even years after the act, it may reduce crime rates, particularly if deterrent penalties are imposed.

For queries below - the benefits of 3 years work as a bricklayer and a degree in ceramics - The bricks with music would be hand made - a flat surface of soft clay then hand carved with that music. The colour difference - that clay may be completely different to the mass produced bricks, or fired at a different temperature. The different pointing around the music bricks may indicate that the original standard bricks were removed and replaced by these - but could simply be that there is efflorescence from the music bricks. Lovely feature in the wall

Fixing their home country is exactly what some exiles / refugees want to do - but they have no means, often no idea, of how to do it. Some simply want to leave that country behind and make a new life elsewhere. There has always been tension between immigrants and indiginous populations. It is a problem that goes back to the start of city states and has been quite well documented for over 3000 years..... I doubt that trump, or anyone, will solve it in any of our lifetimes.
I'm agnostic, but pretty much as close to atheist as an agnostic can get.
ShadowAmicus comments on Jul 14, 2019:
I have friends and acquaintances around the world who followtheir god, under whatever religious banner they choose - me being agnostic does not prevent friendship, rather the opposite. Almost every religion is based on a moral and social code and there are massive overlaps of moral values between these religions and my own views - the basics like not killing, not stealing, helping others, etc.- and some religious ideas I disbelieve like sex, particularly homosexuality, or with a neighbours wife is a sin. My friends and I often talk directly, or by messaging, about moral and philosophical questions and debate possible actions that could be taken to improve parts of the world. They, for the most part, agree that it is not necessary to follow a god to be a 'good' person, as I have come to accept that the teaching of moral values to children can not always be left to parents and is easier for society in general to instill such values if there is a standard bearer / religion to follow. Our only difference is that they are certain a supreme being exists and I do not - but lacking evidence either way I acknowledge there may be (in the same way that we have not yet found a goatherder on the moon - but there may be one) It is judgmental, chauvinistic and frankly stupid, to cut out of your life any person simply because they hold religious views ... better to talk, acknowledge the differences and celebrate the points of agreement.
