We should make a goal of planting a tree for every person in our family.
ShadowAmicus comments on Jul 14, 2019:
I have planted a few on our land, but every year I collect acorns from our oak trees and scatter them beside roads, in hedgerows and among quick growing trees - hope those around in 200 years see them thriving

ShadowAmicus comments on Jul 14, 2019:
In England, up to the sixties, it was very common for an extended family of grandparents to great grandchildren to live in the same village, within easy walking distance and often only a few houses apart. Then, such close family relationships were very common and many family members would meet in a local pub (bar). It is only with better education, greater freedom of travel through car ownership and young adults traveling / moving to other areas for university education and higher paid or more interesting work that has broken down the closer family bonds. We now have many elderly people alone in their homes and having few, if any, visitors, and so many young people with mental health issues now; back then there was a family networkm an inbuilt support system always someone to help the elderly, always someone to listen and talk issues through - . I am not saying things were better then, simply that things have changed, with some benefits, but much has been lost.

ShadowAmicus comments on Jul 12, 2019:
You first have to decide what is 'better distribution of wealth' If it is to take money from some and give it to others - how do you justify it and how do you do it? You can not place a high tax burden on the wealthy, because the wealthy can move abroad and many will, reducing tax revenue overall Does someone who does not work have a right to be financially supported by his neighbour who is struggling with 2 jobs? Education should give everyone the skills to enable them to make a path in life - after that you choos which path and find your way through it The question steps into a quagmire of moral and philosophical issues

ShadowAmicus comments on Jul 11, 2019:
I see my family a few times each year, tomorrow is one of those days. My brothers birthday, an excruciating day going over memories about people I have forgotten, places I dont remember visiting and trivial family stories I never needed to know. Nothing ever said about my father hitting and kicking my mother, my mother beating us with a cane, or father beating us with a belt - which for years I knew as normal family life. My oldest sister will, eventually, prattle on about how bad they all felt on the night I nearly died, despite having been told I don't want to hear it and knowing it will cause me a painful few days of memories that normally stay partially buried. I have little in common with my siblings, even less with their offspring and no reason to see them other than a shared mother ... and every time I ask myself 'why bother?'

What's Your Thinking About Assisted Suicide?
ShadowAmicus comments on Jul 6, 2019:
I think any person has control over their own body, feelings, and plans. For some, the stresses of life and mental issues can lead to thoughts of suicide .. and there should be a means to support people through these times. Where someone has a serious medical condition and the only future is pain, suffering and death - there should be the option to miss out on the pain and suffering section of life. I am unsure why doctors are involved - it should be an individual choce. I am unsure about assistance for suicide - we seem to need a sanitised process, a social and morally acceptable way to sanitise death ... the human body is very fragile and death can come easily.... a small cu, a quick bullett, inhale the right gas, eat the right poison .. it is very easy to die
What we remember
