Conversion of the Jews? Seems misplaced.
ShadowAmicus replies on Dec 30, 2018:
To his coy mistress was written by Andrew Marvell in the time of James ! and commonwealth - the Mayflower had just finished doing its ferry service - but not published until 1685, some years after his death. England had just about settled into the protestant religion - after a long period where catholic monarchs burnt protestants and protestant monarchs burnt catholics. After over a century of persecution all Jews were expelled from England in 1290 and not allowed back into the country till 1656 - so conversion of the Jews was quite the thing at that time.

Sorry - not mine .. Andrew Marvell was a poet in the time of Charles 1 (the one who had his head lopped off), so around the start of American history (mayflower)
The middle of winter has long been a time of celebration around the world.
bleurowz comments on Dec 25, 2018:
Thanks so much for this. It makes me feel so much better about the holiday. Seriously. The "solemness" surrounding Christmas makes me nuts, especially when people complain about having to "keep Christ in Christmas" -- sorry, it was co-opted from the pagans.
ShadowAmicus replies on Dec 27, 2018:
You are welcome . most 'christian' festivals were originally tacked onto pagan, roman or other cultural feast days. and a lot of the 'christmas tradirions' have their roots in various pre-christian practices.
Surprising how many people are posting about their preparations for christmas on an agnostic ...
freeofgod comments on Dec 23, 2018:
We always celebrated the winter solstice. It spaced out the gifts for the grandkids so the didn't get overloaded on xmas day. And we don't believe in xmas. I say happy holidays instead of merry xmas and you wouldn't believe the people it pisses off : ))
ShadowAmicus replies on Dec 23, 2018:
oh yes I would - I always say happy yuletide - sometimes gets me into heated discussions with christians who believe that jesus was definitely born on 25th December
Welcome new member @shadowamicus hope you enjoy your time here:)

Interesting article. About how "the pursuit of happiness" can actually make us unhappy. [bbc.com]

Just BE. That is it. All we need instead of the continuous pressure to be "better"... which really means to consume more goods and services

Simply be oneself, live for where you are without concern for the past, or future .. I think my dog does that and I often wish I could too
Does anyone else here actually sit and think about the philosophical ideas of God, Love, .
BestWithoutGods comments on Nov 25, 2018:
God may be crap, but love is not. Neighborly love is the best foundation for all ethical rules.
ShadowAmicus replies on Nov 30, 2018:
@BestWithoutGods Hi .. me too. Long ago I would have given my life for queen and country (came too close too often).... now too old and cynical of politicians motives to get involved. But for three women, my dog and the Taj Mahal I would readily fight and if required die to save them

would you die for your neighbours .. or tone down love to 'a mutual respect'

I do. As a retiree I have plenty of time for pondering things, and I am getting stimulating ideas from this forum. I don’t wrestle with the God question however. “God” has become an inappropriate word IMO for public discussions. But there is Nature, and what a marvel is Nature! This Nature ...
ShadowAmicus replies on Nov 26, 2018:
Totally agree with the immutability of nature .. we are part of a natural cycle .. I still question if there is some 'entity' that set up 'nature .. something that set up and controls what you call 'brought life into existence'. I don't see this entity as a god, ie something to be venerated, simply something that exists .. simply as a power, life force, or whatever, no more to be worshiped than lightning, hurricanes or other natural force.
