This is my 2nd incarnation on, originally under the handle of Surfpirate and on my way to lvl 10, my profile was lost somewhere in cyberspace. Raised in a JW family and got out the day I turned 13 years of age and earned the right to choose for myself, use the book against them and there's not much they can say. I have read many religious texts from cover to cover and found them all wanting, studied Life Sciences and Business Admin in University, owned several construction companies and retired with my lovely wife at the ripe old age of 47. Currently we own and operate an electric bicycle business in Ontario, Canada - not a big money maker but it is something we love to do and being retired we can feel free to do whatever we please.

I believe that Jesus as a historical figure. Am I wrong about this?
SnowyOwl comments on Jul 27, 2021:
I think you started out on the right foot, you believe that Jesus of Nazareth was a historical figure but it is just a belief because there really is no hard evidence to confirm that such a person ever existed outside of the New Testament which was written by people forming a religion and not historians. The closest evidence of Jesus having existed would be from either Josephus or Tacitus who were both historians from the period after the death of the biblical Jesus and they were both born after the death of the biblical Jesus so they never saw him or witnessed anything that the Bible attributes to Jesus. The Bible supports the existence of Jesus as a man but The Lord of the Rings trilogy supports the existence of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins as hobbits, given the passage of time we may have a religion based upon the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien. It's certainly a more interesting read. ;)

I told him to knock himself out and went to bed - woke up the next day and went home. Mental illness is such a tricky topic to try and get your head around, unless you are forced to deal with it, most people just want to ignore it. The religious types tend to put it down to demonic possession and it's very hard to get a prescription for that. ;)

SnowyOwl comments on Jul 9, 2021:
I built hotels before retiring early so I lived in many places over the years besides my native Canada, the longest was on the island country of Bermuda but we spent several years living and traveling in South America as well. Uruguay was very progressive and we found much of Argentina and Chile to be similar but our favourite country was Ecuador where we lived on and off for two years. The Catholic Church is deeply entrenched in Latin America and although there is a continuing move away from the church by the younger generations it is still an underpinning of everything that happens there. Seeing the huge cathedrals that are usually built on indigenous temple foundations and dripping with gold inside while beggars crowd the steps out front is something that always filled me with disgust. Mexico is another country we lived and traveled in for a couple of years and we still consider returning there to live but it crawls with Gringos from the USA and they bring their crazy political and cultural views with them so we tend to stay away from any areas in Mexico that cater to tourists and where many speak English, far better to struggle with our Spanish and avoid the Yanquees. I don't think you can ever really escape religious influence on this planet, even Iceland has recently brought back the old Norse gods as an official religion but there are places where religion plays less of a role in daily life and not surprisingly those countries tend to be the happiest places to live.

Vox - Why so many Covid-19 variants are showing up now []
SnowyOwl comments on Jun 16, 2021:
That's the funny thing about Variants, they are a mathematical probability that is easy to calculate to a good level of certainty, take enough hosts spreading a virus and inevitably mutations will appear that are more resistant to vaccines and more communicable. The problem arises when the hosts assume that they are safe because the case numbers of transmission have dropped so they go back to normal practices that allow the virus to spread more readily and therefore increase the chances of mutation into new variants. Viruses are not smart but hosts tend to be complacent and willing to resist containment measures, a bit of a symbiotic relationship but the hosts have to ultimately die out before the virus will.

SnowyOwl comments on Jun 14, 2021:
Isn't the whole focus of Christianity to obtain salvation through martyrdom? Little wonder they claim persecution but ironically they are the ones who love to persecute others and in direct contravention of the teaching of their savior who tells them to be meek and mild, to turn the other cheek and they will inherit the earth for doing so. Typical double talk, humans do love to listen to their own looped feedback in their own heads.
