Widower, mature student of Social Sciences, father, hero and a damn good egg!
Vehement non-smoker and atheist - well the later bit is why I'm here!
Right now I'm trying to put life back together after the death of my wife, she died back in 2015. My first step was to try a follow in our daughters footsteps and gain an education, or else I'll end up doing zero hour contracts for minimum wage. So, trying for a degree. If romance blossoms through meeting someone, then all well and good, if not then I want some good conversations without phrases about it being 'Gods plan' thrown at me.
Things about me.....

Remember Jesus was moderately inconvenienced for our sins. Being immortal he couldn't die. Last time I was at church the priest said Jesus was alive and still walked among us. Personally I think he was talking bollocks, I just think of being paid to be there!

Sofabeast comments on Apr 19, 2019:
It would be logical for a God to keep up proper communication with its subjects. Updating them in an identical manner on a regular basis. It would also be quite illogical for a God to start with a single interaction by say making a woman pregnant and wait for that person to grow up in a single location and spread the word to all of humanity at walking pace. Why not impregnate a few thousand and spread the good news all over the world, or just have us all have an inbuilt knowledge of God and the rules of how to worship it. Once you take apart religions, they don't stand up to scrutiny very well.

With every case of autism being individual, the research will produce anomalies and ethical questions. Who would get the treatment? I find the research interesting. As an aside, my late wife had brain tumour. At times she presented with symptoms that mimicked autism very closely, only to then recover. Thus, could there be some sort of connection with some forms of treatment to 'normalise' cognitive ability.

Sofabeast comments on Apr 8, 2019:
Freedom comes with duties and responsibilities to others and not just the fulfillment of personal desires. Laws give us freedom (Locke, J. Social Compact) Being nude in public is not socially acceptable. The why, is the potential for the sexualisation of being nude. Paedophiles may well see children as sexual targets when outside in public. Misogynists leering at beautiful young ladies and so on. Ideally I'd like people to be able to wander around without clothes on if they wish, but quite frankly I don't want people to be uncomfortable should accidental inappropriate body contact happen on crowded public transport happens. As for symbols of religion, it is part of being a human being and shouldn't be infringed on, in the same way that should I decide to show my support for reason I could wear an atheist badge. Unless by donning said symbols it offends significantly or demands violence on others. An example symbol is the swastika. Although of course we are all nude under our clothes if that's any consolation.

I've seen a few questions from men asking women to tell them what is great sex to them.
Sofabeast comments on Apr 8, 2019:
Sex is very personal to the lovers. The interaction at the start of a relationship is one of great learning. Young lovers may not have the time or place for an all day session once the kids have gone to school and so must try great quickies where and when they can. More mature lovers can take their time and experiment. The key is communication and learning. Observe your lovers, try not to hurry. Take a break, kiss, touch, tickle, laugh and have fun. Tease one another. Tell your lover what you want and how to hold and caress you. Make adjustments for how you all may be feeling. I suggest enjoy making the other person orgasm and recover over attempting to coordinate orgasms. Afterwards, go and make them a snack and drink, give a moment for the post coital farting competition that never appears in movies or erotic literature, but we are all guilty of. Remember to cuddle.

Sofabeast comments on Apr 3, 2019:
Very interesting. I studied the transatlantic slave trade two years ago. The whole situation of who, how and when is astonishing. The social ramifications hit not only the USA but all of modern humanity. And in the UK at the moment its tendrils are still moving as hidden racism breaks free in the light of Brexit. Horribly I witnessed some 'innocent/ignorant' comments on a bus about a black man in Aberdeen this week. I don't think it was meant to hurt or offend, but the racism was there non the less.

I agree with you. We could really do with Brexshit put on hold for 12 months. Elect our MEPs then have a general election with Brexshit at its heart. Effectively a second referendum via the ballot box. Some MPs need to be excluded from standing ever again. Boris, Gove, May, Corbyn, and Reese-Mogg. Once we a have a new government, then they must act together and decide on what choices for Brexshit are available. This must include what the EU will accept too. Then the choices will be put to the people for a final say. As this campaign proceeds an objective body must check the facts being touted. If like last time there is a blatant lie splashed on a bus, then this must be made plain to the public and those who spout the untruths will be branded as liars to the people, and will be removed from further campaigning.

Islam is not a religion, rather a death cult for apostates.
Sofabeast comments on Apr 1, 2019:
Thank you for raising the issue. I strongly suspect that most of the members of this site come from some sort of Christian background and a lesser number from Judaism. - I'm being very general here with that statement. So to hear from a person who has come from Islam into reason, at least for me is very interesting. I tend to see more 'Christian bashing' going on not only here, but in at least British society. I have often wondered if that is due to fear of some kind of retribution. Still, one can look back to the Inquisition for comparison on intolerance. At college I know that one of my lecturers is an evangelical devout Christian, which surprises as they are leading our research classes. And we have the only Muslim in the college. The Muslim is willing to question their faith, and I suspect will loose it as the arguments for a god dissipate under scrutiny. They would also love to try alcohol - after all, Islam shares the same god as Judaism and Christianity and they both have wine in their ceremonies. So why would god deny Muslims?
And now for something completely different from Brexit.

I know the Trump won't stand for it, but the USA needs an American Court of Human Rights similar to the European Court of Human Rights. Now from a personal perspective, a few times my lovers have asked me to stop, and as a good guy and caring lover I did. Sometimes it happens for whatever reason that a woman says they want to stop, a man therefore should stop - end of. From my experience, it can be an excellent bonding activity. Something for NC male legislators need to think about is, if a guy looses his erection, he MUST make his lady orgasm, just to be equal. By the way, the link seems to be down

What do you say about near death experiences where the person claims they've seen heaven or hell?
Sofabeast comments on Mar 27, 2019:
My late wife had many near death experiences before her brain tumour finally won, and she said it was just pleasant and peaceful with memories of loved ones including her cats who had passed, but also some people who were still around. She/we believe it is just the delusions of a brain under those conditions.
The NRA comes out against the Violence Against Women Act
Sofabeast comments on Mar 27, 2019:
Ok, I see where the NRA are coming from. I don't agree with them. But what it is, is to do with the US Constitution and the philosophy of John Locke. By constricting the gun ownership of violent men will prevent those men from using their weapons to protect the liberty, property and laws of the people against tyranny and enemies foreign and domestic. A government who has nothing to fear from a peoples revolution, is at risk of corruption by a single tyrannical leader. Within this philosophy, a woman should protect herself by the use of firearms and the final sanction of death. Bloody John Locke and his second treatise on government! This argument works in the world of John Locke and latterly Thomas Paine and the American Revolution, but in the C21 no. We have seen in New Zealand recently and the USA the all to often mass shootings how modern firearms are a force multiplier. A pissed off maniac with a firelocke musket can pump out about two shots a minute, an assault rifle vomits out around seven rounds a second by comparison. Yes, useful when fighting a tyrannical government, but the evil that can be done when a stupid hate-monger lets loose on his previous co-workers or family. In conclusion, don't let fuckwits have guns.

For the Jehovah, how many places in heaven are there, and how many left? Is there a quota? And what happens when it is full? Do souls get chucked out? For the Baptist, What happened to all of those souls that could never have heard the word of Jesus because of Geography, time or mental condition? If we are made in Gods image, are we the best he could do, only we don't last long and wear out quick. And the Mormon, Jo Smith, he was making it all up wasn't he. Got caught by the wife playing away from home - God said. Then those stones that only he could translate - err God did it. Give me your money - God says so!

Well said, should there be otherwise a 'Catfish' option for those who just wish to play people? Post the image you are happy with. I'm a plump Englishman in a kilt in my photo. Usually I'm a stout Englishman in trousers. But I live in Scotland. I'd like to find love, and I think it would be unfair to show a photo of me when I was young and sexy, as I'm almost 57 and not sexy. I don't add 'Here for community' but that is what I do. No one has asked me for a date, and to be honest, I don't think that will ever happen.
Should something be done about this?
Sofabeast comments on Mar 27, 2019:
Some people are drivers of the economies, ideas and society. They should be rewarded for that, but there is a limit or else revolution at some point will break out. Perhaps in the Capitalist world the rich should be taxed upon assets, not income. Society becomes less happy when there is a huge disparity between haves and have nots. In the USA, wealth is worshiped above all else, but the masses are denied access to it by the rich, who then indoctrinate the masses into believing that taxation of their riches would be terrible, as socialism is theft of private property. There is a balance point, look at Japan for an example.
The subconscious.
Sofabeast comments on Mar 27, 2019:
Dreams, the Royal road to the subconscious. The fact is, we can only at this time have a subjective view of dreams, and there is no truly supportive evidence that there is any meaning to dreams. And therefore, are only the random firings of activity of the brain stem as it organises memories/images into linier data. Lincoln may have had many dreams of his death before, disappearing like 'tears in the rain'. The same for Helen Duncan. Likelihood is, she was awoken during a ship sinking dream and thus, remembered it more vividly.

Apart form that, Gove has a face I just want to punch. And that isn't a nice thing to say about a person I have never met or really know as a human being. I know of many others who think the same, or to be more truthful, I don't know many who don't want to punch him in the manner of an old style school bully. Yes, atheists CAN believe in ghosts. - YouTube
Sofabeast comments on Mar 22, 2019:
Surely it all depends what you may see as being a ghost. The late Micheal Bentine believed them to be recordings of events into a place, much like magnetic tape can have sounds and images recorded onto it. I've encountered 'ghosts', but as for what they really were - I can't say. What I encountered may be nothing more than my imagination producing a hallucination. Plenty of psychological reference material for being the answer to what ghosts are. Maybe our 'spirits' are energy and what appears is just the change in the focus of that energy? One day, I'm sure we'll find out, but until then I think they are more likely to be phenomena of the mind.
What do you do when religious people knock?
Sofabeast comments on Mar 22, 2019:
I love to debate, I love to correct their literature and offer them other alternatives. I give them history and questions - such as why did Jesus appear there and at that time? After all, wouldn't a smart god have dropped off the its word when there were only a few humans about, living in the same place and having the same language? Then what about heaven? If we cannot get into heaven without letting Jesus into our heart, what about the billions who could never have encountered his word? Then that word could only travel at walking pace across the globe until the invention of the radio. It's all bollocks really. An alternative I offer them is, creation is 'god'. I don't offer the science of creation, merely we are here and so is everything else. Creation happened, so as part of that evolution and constant change happen. The bible was written by people, and thus, must be fallible. Gently removing the support of their holy book filling them with doubt. In the end, I strive to make them think. Once they start to think and question, then the roots of atheism is planted. Some however, are too dumb to change.

Sofabeast comments on Mar 21, 2019:
Maggots and honey. My late father's surgical team wished they have used them. However, assuming that you can't add them as NHS treatment, you could add it in as a discussion point. I've seen it work on animals - My late wife had a cat come in with an open wound infested with maggots, she tended where the maggots had got to the wound, and dressed it with some pure honey. Honey is anti bacterial if sticky, but he wound was closed and clean quicker than she would have expected. This method of treatment was used in Ancient Egypt with apparent success. Look it up, and add it in, if only to turn some stomachs https://woundcareadvisor.com/using-maggots-in-wound-care-part-1-vol3-no4/ https://www.dermnetnz.org/topics/honey/

Sofabeast comments on Mar 20, 2019:
Try to find a Butlers shop for hot chocolate and chocolate. Enjoy being ripped off in Eire, I mean that in a good way, so be prepared to haggle. Head north to Limerick, there is a lovely castle/living museum there. As for London, what part are you staying in? You'll need an Oyster card to travel as all of London Transport is cash free. Eire is metric and you'll need Euros, so Kilometres, Kilos, Grammes, Litres, Celsius but also pints (20oz British ones, not puny 16oz) Ireland has better tea. Craic (krak) is fun, not drugs. Part of the EU. Generally public transport is good in Eire. England/UK semi-metric - pints and miles. Possibly part of the EU, or maybe not. Plastic £5 & £10 notes. Northern Irish £5 notes are not legal tender on the UK mainland if you end up with some. Beware there are five different types. Both places - make fun of Trump, we all hate him, so you'll get a sympathy vote. We drive on the left, remember that when crossing roads, however, if you go to Dublin, it's pot luck what side of the road they drive on there. Trams are fun in Dublin. Ask how to use them if you are there.

Do you think it's ok for people to judge European Americans based solely on their race?
Sofabeast comments on Mar 19, 2019:
Within the USA non-Europeans suffer detrimental bias based upon race. Now I can argue that there is only one race, the human race. We are far more similar than different, but we humans do have external markers of colour. This affects our eyes, hair and skin, then we have differing shapes too. Racism has existed for all of recorded history, and likely much, much longer. During the nineteenth century white European scientists began to categorise people by race. At the time, it appeared to be logical and scientific. The eugenics movement began in the UK and rapidly caught on in Germany and the USA where it remained popular beyond WWII. Only with the rise of the Civil Rights movement did it finally begin to be debunked. However, the ideas still remain entrenched with some fuckwits. In a weeks time, I will be writing a short sociology paper on the subject of racism in the UK.

Under Scots law, anyone can just wander all over his estate, just as long as no damage is done or interference to work. Sofabeast comments on Mar 18, 2019:
Voting in Europe quite often was done either in the churches or a nearby building. It also means nobody is at work, and thus are free to vote. Of course this has changed over the years.

To be fair, Trotsky said it first, but Uncle Joe saw Imperialist interference and an attempt to reintroduce Capitalism into the Soviet Union together with the removal of an autocratic totalitarian leadership.... Bollocks, I've spent enough time at college today writing about Stalinist communism and how true socialism cannot work, but liberal socialist policies similar to Barkarin's did. ReKulakisation I say!
People always talk about going into outer space… yet our earth is just a giant space ship, ...
Sofabeast comments on Mar 13, 2019:
Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving and revolving at nine hundred miles an hour It's orbiting at 19 miles a second, so it's reckoned The sun that is the source of all our power The Sun and you and me, and all the stars that we can see Are moving at a million miles a day In the outer spiral arm, at 40,000 miles an hour Of the Galaxy we call the Milky Way Our Galaxy itself contains 100 billion stars It's 100,000 light-years side-to-side It bulges in the middle, 16 000 light-years thick But out by us it's just 3 000 light-years wide We're 30,000 light-years from galactic central point We go round every 200 million years And our galaxy is only one of millions of billions In this amazing and expanding universe The universe itself keeps on expanding and expanding In all of the directions it can whizz As fast as it can go, at the speed of light you know Twelve million miles a minute, and that's the fastest speed there is So remember, when you're feeling very small and insecure How amazingly unlikely is your birth Pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space Because there's bugger all down here on Earth... This must be the time of the greatest number of political agnostics throughout history.
Sofabeast comments on Mar 13, 2019:
I was pondering the same about two hours ago myself. I believe that we need to put Brexshit on hold for up to a year, have a general election, with some of the MPs being exempt from standing - May, Bo-Jo, Gove, Fox, Mogg and Corbyn. Form a government of national unity for the duration of the crisis. Then put the choice of WTO, New Deal and remain to the public as a binding vote using single transferable voting. This will confirm the decision. Add to this an objective organisation who will fact check statements and the the deals consequences. Then like France, halt electioneering three days prior to the vote so the public can think. If some stupid media outlet decides to state how to vote, the the process will be halted and the media fined for the whole cost of the delay.
Who elses does this? Be honest.

To this day it still amazes me how many people still believe in the literal interpretation of angels...
Sofabeast comments on Mar 11, 2019:
A problem I also see or hear, is the literal interpretation of the King James bible. The priestly evangelical caste don't appear to understand the differences of linguistic translations. Let alone how language has evolved over time. In old Hebrew, to wash the feet of a person, was to give oral sex in everyday meaning during the time of Christ. I dare say, the truth is known by the church, but it's all about power and money. Disclaimer - As part of my employment, I support a service user to a church now and again.
Is "Social Justice" a dogmatic religion?

I hate Daylight Savings time.
Sofabeast comments on Mar 10, 2019:
It is a stupid thing. Invented by a Liberal Member of Parliament (UK) to allow his son more daylight to get to school, and began implementation during the spring on 1918. If a different starting time is useful, then let it be the starting time of peoples work, not entire countries. In the USA the time changes on the 10th March, the UK changes a couple of weeks later. As a medical healthcare professional working with people with learning difficulties I can demonstrate an increase in incidents and problems during the clock times. My late wife saw similar in her profession as a Veterinary surgeon. So it's all bollocks and should be stopped!

Sofabeast comments on Mar 10, 2019:
There are too many emotions involved in Brexit. Cold hard logic producing intelligent conclusions has been ignored. Will the UK be better off with Theresa May's deal or WTO rules? It has to be her deal since the English people decided to take the UK out of the EU. I would rather that the 2016 referendum was seen as being purely advisory. Then the government would seek to firstly build a coalition of unity involving all parties to produce consensus on the options for the UK. Once they have been explored they would be scrutinised by parliament who would produce a selection of final choices for the people to vote on. In the primary and secondary campaigns a non-political group must be used to cross-check the facts. That way the NHS bus would have been outed as a lie and those spouting it as facts could be exposed liars.
What Do TV Pundits Mean When They Say Democrats Should Move to the Middle? WTF is the Middle?
Sofabeast comments on Mar 7, 2019:
The middle is nationally subjective. The Democrats in the USA are the political left. But in Europe they would the right, with the Republicans being extremists beyond right wing.
