Politics and religion are different topics, although throughout history organized religion has always tried to inject itself into politics. When it comes to labels such as liberal and conservative etc, what exactly determines the definitions of those, how do we determine who falls into what category? I've long maintained that conservatism and liberalism have more than one manifestation. I could think of at least three areas off the top of my head- fiscal/economic issues, constitutional, and social based issues. Each of those three categories have their share of conservative and liberal individuals. Take me for example, I consider myself fiscally and constitutionally conservative while being more socially liberal (true liberal that is, and not the progressive brand of politics). That combination would put someone like me just right of center on the political spectrum. With that said, I ask again, how exactly do we determine who/what is conservative or liberal, what is it we are either being liberal on or conserving? I'd say the religious issue would largely be a social based-issue, if you are religious you'd be socially conservative and if you're not religious then you'd be considered more socially liberal. Hope that helps some, and can't say I blame you on not getting mixed up in the labels and such, identity politics can be truly vicious, small wonder why I'm registered Independent. Both extremes are bad news.

While certain "boogeymen" may indeed truly exist, it's the fearmongering part in the meme that I certainly agree on. For the most part, I do believe the red scare/war on terror/killer virus etc are quite real, it's that when those in positions of authority make an attempt to control the masses through needless fearmongering, which in turn causes confusion and fighting among the citizens that concerns me. Regarding Covid, it's certainly fine to be concerned and desire to constantly stay in the know, but the political left in our country have taken intel to the extreme and in the process created needless drama in society, you know that as well as I do (just think mask Karens for instance). Small wonder why I'm registered independent, I seriously distrust those in positions of power and authority, as I get the feeling they are playing us citizens against each other.

These days it appears the political left are indeed cultlike, probably because they have gone too far to the left. Personally I don't care for extremes of any sort, and have a mixture of conservative and liberal views (most call that being Libertarian). I don't think being truly liberal is a totally bad thing, problem there is the left has become illiberal in favor of "progressive" politics, which woke progressivism is cultish in their approach to matters. Come from a long line of Democrats, and long ago turned my back on the Democrat Party. Never thought the day would come that I'd align more with conservative views, but it happened, at least where fiscal/economic and constitutional issues are concerned. Anyways, no shortage of cults these days. You'll find the right-leaning groups on here to be a retreat from the insanity and venom on the public threads. Take care.

I contend it could be a combination of both. The man-made part is obvious, the concept of organized religion pretty much speaks for itself. I say it could also be instinctual in the sense that a lot of human beings possess a seemingly innate desire for some sort of structure/organization/appeal to a higher authority. Over the years I have observed such from a considerable number of fellow agnostics and atheists, the belief in or need to believe in a deity may have been removed from the equation, but the desire to appeal to a "higher authority" manifests itself in the need for more/bigger Government involvement in personal affairs.
