Stupid questions. If she didn't want to know, you'd have no right to tell her, even if you had that knowledge and power, which you don't. You have no idea if there is a 'god' or not; you don't even know what 'god' would be in the first place, since there is no fixed definition. It seems extremely arrogant and smug of you to presume you have those answers, which points out once again the principle difference between Agnostics and atheists, I suppose.

In keeping with the new morality
What do you think are some of the root causes of apathy in our society?
Storm1752 comments on Jul 9, 2019:
Sheer laziness. There are so many interesting things and critical issues to occupy the mind, it is almost immoral not to care. Apathy causes the lazy to rationalize, for instance, not VOTING, by saying their vote doesn't matter. Bullsh*t. You're just a lazy, apathetic excuse for a human being. Apathy is a disease of the mind, possibly caused by a conviction nothing matters, we all die anyway. A true believer, whether IN god, or perhaps especially in god's non-existence, might for that reason be apatheic. At least the theist has a brighter expectation for the future. (But an Abrahamic believer still has Armaggedon to navigate...by no means a cheerful prospect!) Agnostcism is less likely to breed apathy, but may. An agnostic atheist might be more prone to it than an agnostic deist, for example, but the shadow of a doubt may spark some interest in the world around them!

Agree because they're programmed robots doing the bidding of the "vast right-wing conspiracy," of which right-wing media propaganda is an activist arm. It's fake protest by a tiny majority, intended to rile up similarly programmed follower-level fellow travelers. I don't mind, frankly, personally, because I'm retired and it's easy for me to isolate myself,. Since they stand a better chance of contracting the disease, moreover, perhaps it'll show these robots that acting ignorantly is not a game, and have real-world consequences, like sickness and death.

Storm1752 comments on Oct 1, 2021:
Funny, except in the first century a.d. there WAS no early "community of believers," because there was no Jesus Christ. That myth was created much later, almost certainly by the Romans themselves, in part because they needed a new religion to replace the one discredited by the Augustan Caesars, and/or to dilute/replace the troublemaking Jewish culture/religion (dispersed/destroyed after Masada), with a more compliant one. In any event, not a shred of evidence exists (outside the "New Testament") referencing such a 'god-man,' nothing by the many scribes and historians, nothing in the official government record, no anecdotal eyewitness accounts...nothing. So, an interesting meme, if only because it's a well-intentioned slam appropriately aimed at this phony "religion." But, probably not actually based on fact.

Storm1752 comments on Oct 12, 2019:
Compared to...? A lot of people come and read and think but don't say anything. They observe, like scientists a rare, exotic species. But considering the meteotic growth in agnostic thought, the numbers could be small. So what? Many agnostics are not activist (or even ACTIVE) by nature and simply don't care about preaching their viewpoint. Or discussing it. Or arguing about it. They:re not motivated to find support for their opinions. Why bother? Being new, many here still have conflicts and issues within THEMSELVES and their OWN world view and are trying to sort it all out. They're not sure WHAT to think. Once they are they might fade away. Some come harboring a deep distrust, even hatred, for religious folk and want to break them, and are here to grow a "movement," as they see it. Some are social and interactive and like the sense of community. Me? I like, I hate, I scoff, I applaud, I remain silent, I speak up, I stay away, I'm fueled by a self-righteous fire, gentle bemusement, or detached indifference. Depends on which hour of which day. As an agnostic I'm usually open to new ideas expressed by open-minded people. But like most of us I'm pretty sure I have it basically right. It's an accident I'm here, but now that I am I'll probably never leave. I'm no hero and lie to others when advisable, or convenient, or imperative. It's a realistic, pragmatic approach--often cowardly but I don't care--it works for me.

"The truth is the truth, even if no one believes it. A lie is a lie, even if everyone believes it."--unknown. "The truth will prevail where there is pains to bring it to light.'--George Washington, famous deist. As our knowledge of reality deepens, loyalty to falsity thins, weakens, and finally withers. It's been written, "Patriotism is the last refuge, to which a scoundrel clings;" patriotism, or false idols? Both? A foundation of lies, built on sand, easily washes away; a house of wood eventually decays and falls with the rain and wind. Build with stone, and lies are (or mere ignorance is) helpless in the end. Either we lived with dinosaurs or not...loud protestations notwithstanding. Either 'god' created the universe in six days or not...nonsense is irrelevant. Increasingly people know this, more strongly with each passing year. There is no 'tipping point,' in my opinion, just a gradual eating away at a weak foundation, while a stronger one takes it's place.
This is true

Origen surely had some inspiring thoughts, but because lately I'm interested in the newly 'hot' idea of a cyclical universe (as opposed to a Big Bang-style one) and reincarnation (which he rejected though he confusingly tolerated 'transmigration of the soul'), and because he held versions of ULTRA-conservative Christian orthodox beliefs, and because I don't believe one word of the Christ myth anyway, the entire artifice of the theology surrounding it seems like an exercise in layering ever-more elaborate myths on top of earlier myths, not a fleshing out of a true story and it's supporting dogma. During this time the 'real story' of 'Christ' and his supposed life, teachings, origin, nature, and that of the universe, were in enormous flux, which tells me it was primarily if not entirely an intellectual exercise, and the prevailing doctrine 'won' for many reasons, but probably NOT because it was the truth. For instance, Origen's idea 'God' created all spirits before the world was created, and Christ's soul first of all, seems merely that, a notion of his, ultimately rejected by the church. Why? I personally don't know or care, but it goes to show it MIGHT have been adopted. Would that have made it the more true? Not in MY opinion! It's irrelevant anyway, to me, because the whole edifice is fiction built upon fiction. Do you think otherwise? What is your point?

Storm1752 comments on Oct 8, 2018:
Why does any religion exist? Christianity has been proven fraudulent (there wasn't a Nazareth in first century Palestine), Mormonism is an absolute joke, there was no Buddha, Muhammed was a bloodthirsty psycopath, etc. But instead of condemning old, obsolete religions, we SHOULD be inventing a new one more relevant to the modern world, based on reality. Storm1752 comments on Oct 3, 2019:
What you're really asking is, "Who cannot see the utter self-contradiction of the whole fable?" And, "Why would god set up this whole charade to play out in the first place?" But, to humor the question for just for a second, only a relatively few people knew he was god, right? If the rest HAD known, they never would have crucified him no matter what? THEY would've opposed it? Not necessarily! So why didn't he snap his fingers and make it obvious? Because he didn't WANT them to know? If they HAD known, and knew all of mankind, living, dead, or yet to be born, would be "saved," and that "Jesus" WANTED it, they probably would've thought god was a lunatic, but they probably would've shrugged their shoulders and said, "whatever." One could go on and on about the ridiculousness of the whole thing!

To me it not only feels right, everything about the world around me practically screams it in my ears and makes my eyes hurt from the glare. The majesty of creation is something awe-inspiring and fills one with wonder. The true mystery of it all takes one's breath away, and is far more powerful than any "religious" experience could ever be, if one just lets it sink in for a moment. I can't forgive those who stole from me, hurt me and/or betrayed me, but I CAN forgive myself for the foolish or "bad" things I did under the influence of alcohol, in particular. Alcohol put me in a vulnerable place. I didn't know it at the time but I was just "asking for it!" I can forgive myself for drinking in the first place; there were legitimate though misplaced reasons for it. I'm just glad I've been sober these past three years, and I'll never go back
Just because I have posted in a while....😊

Sure. Why not? Statues of MLK, for instance. The Confederate battle flag is a LOT like the Nazi swastika; EXTREMELY obnoxious, offensive, and an insult to not only the descendants of black slaves, but also to the victorious north who fought a bloody Civil War to end slavery as a state-sanctioned institution.

Laws ARE designed to control man's darkest impulses, but are only partially successful in doing so. There will always be criminals. But if we had NO laws, it would be an even more dangerous world than it already is. Frankly, you sound like a retarded lunatic.

My 97-year-old mother is a devout Catholic, a single-issue voter (abortion of course), and possesses an eerie, reserved calm and an air of infallible rectitude which can be insettling. Despite my profound respect for her core, principled commitment to her beliefs, and my agreement with some of her values, I despise others and could not disagree with her more. In short, we live on separate, distinct and irreconciliable planets, solar systems, galaxies, UNIVERSES. Sometimes I forget myself and bring up some complicated problem I'm having. Her 100% answer to any and ALL of them: PRAY. That's it. No nuance, discussions of pros and cons, moral conundrums, complications, etc., etc. PRAY. Must be nice for her life is so simple. I think she's insane. But nice.

I think I found it as a dating site because I tried POF and I hardly EVER got any response and it was one-sided in favor of the girls, who normally chose rich guys. So I figured on VeggieDate, etc., there'd be a much better chance to find like-minded people. When I came across Agnostics, I investigated because I always thought of myself as agnostic without really thinking what that really meant. Well, STILL no dates but I could care less. It is MUCH MORE than that. I spend a lot of time agreeing and debating, reading and learning, joined groups of special interest, some dealing with sex and others not, I don't hesitate to give my point of view regardess if it violates some Orthodoxy. (Lots of thin-skinned self-appointed 'saints' on here.) It's a great and unique place full of amazing (and semi-amazing) people and if I ever do "slut it out" or monogamize it with someone on here someday somehow I'll just consider it a bonus.

France bans gay ‘conversion therapy’ with new law
Storm1752 comments on Jan 27, 2022:
Whether someone is born gay or bi OR chooses to be gay or bi, why do these people care?
Religion and tradition repressed people and kept them stupid.
Storm1752 comments on May 12, 2019:
Morality has nothing to do with it. Plus your definitions are wrong. Freedom means not having to obey anyone telling you what to do. Science is facts, as best we know them. Religion is the opposite of facts. The confusion comes in when someone.SAYS something is a fact, but it isn't, thus mis-using the word. So what you are talking about is confusion based on a mis-use of words. Morality comes in when something is used or mis- used based on precise or imprecise use or mis-use of words. This is done to either shed light on the truth (science/facts) or to obfuscate the truth (religion/faith) for either objective knowledge, or subjective belief. The truth bestows freedom; faith demands blind obedience.
Rittenhouse Verdict Sets New Legal Precedent On White Privilege
Storm1752 comments on Nov 21, 2021:
I disagree with the (black) lady who wrote this article. I listened to some of the testimony and I thought it credible and believable, and I'm neither conservative nor an atheist. Though it can't be proven one way or the other, both who testified said the men were moving toward him aggressively and were threatening him with bodily harm and trying to grab his gun. You can question his politics and overall belief system, but it seems to me in this particular instance Rittenhouse was acting in self defense. Is this a case of reverse racism, that he is assumed guilty until proven innocent simply because he was not only out after curfew (like a whole lot of other people), but mostly because he is white? I'm a staunch supporter of BLM and 99% of their cause, but this is a specific instance with it's own set of circumstances. This is a very weak article, outrageous in its own way.
