Well, so much for the presidency in 2020! Though it can hardly be said out loud by any sane politician, what's so bad about asking her that? A fetus is not a human being, so inquiring as to her intentions regarding it's long term viability is not, or should not be, out of bounds. The days abortion was considered an acceptable form of birth control are, sadly, over, as conservatives have ruined it as a respectable option for women. It is now considered "murder" by a near- or real majority. Why this is so is a mystery, because adherents of the Abrahamic religions believe the "unborn baby's" 'soul' goes directly to 'heaven' after it is relieved of it's earthy labors. I for one often times wished, in my semi-believing days, I HAD been aborted...it would've been my Get Out of the World Free card--get out of bondage and go directly to heaven, skip all the heavy lifting! Besides, the planet would be better off today if about half of us had never been born. 18 billion people? It won't be long! 36 billion? Mars will be ready for occupancy by then.
Evolution is just a Theory? CORRECT.

I agree, with this caveat: As an agnostic, I've the right to hypothesize all kinds of wild ideas; to wit: IF you define 'god' as all matter and energy in the universe, possessed of a kind of 'consciousness,' the polytheistic model might be more appropriate; that is, each particle, down to the subatomic quark, may be a 'god' in some sense. So, the universe may contain an infinite number of 'gods.'
Iceland Declares All Religions Are Mental Disorders [patheos.com] What are opinions here?
Storm1752 comments on Feb 14, 2020:
I applaud Iceland and Sweden for their principled and enlightened stands. While I don't see religion as necessarily a "mental disorder," in some of it's myriad forms (fundamentalist Christianity, jihad Islam, etc.) it most certainly IS deranged and potentially harmful especially to vulnerable, impressionable, and/or developing minds.
I discover more and more that in any group of people, there's a tendency for it to fragment.
Storm1752 comments on Feb 14, 2020:
Agnostics don't agree there is no god. God is irrelevant. Only people matter. That said, the Democratic Party is VERY fragmented. Why? Republicans have been systematically dismantling the Democratic system by which we establish what the majority wants the government to do. Believing they speak for god, they are contemptuous of what secular men and women (who they believe are evil in their very essence) think, want, do, etc. Republicans want to gain and maintain control by any means necessary, period. They are the "vast right-wing conspiracy" Hillary shouted about at the top of her lungs, and she was right. The only remedy is to VOTE in high enough numbers to defeat them before it's so too late. Our democracy is at stake. Without it we will live in a fascist oligarchy.
Religion has always been used as a tool to control the population.
Storm1752 comments on Feb 13, 2020:
Why are they "slaves" to this kind of thinking? I think of the Jefferson Bible, excised of all superfluidities to include only the distilled words of whoever wrote them-- possibly Josephus himself, almost certainly not a human being called 'Jesus...' Some of it's good stuff, one must admit if critical thinking is momentarily set aside. Forget 'Paul' for a second, and the 'Epistles' by scoundrel dogs who twisted and warped them to suit their agendas. And the countless con artists and interpreters like Augustine, who froze them into a dogma. The core 'sayings' are pretty cool! Inspiring, even. If people are "slaves," or alternately "sheep," it is to their inner desire to 'do the right thing' and 'be good people' at peace with themselves. Whatever religion you're talking about--Hindu, Christian, even Muslim--it's that core impulse which compels them to collective action. What alternatives do they have? That fundamentally decent desire is corrupted by those who use their charismatic skills to sway others, and who themselves are taught from the cradle these lies. Worse, in their own minds they BECOME 'Jesus,' encouraged by the unconditional, unquestioning approval of his or her listeners. By continual repetition of these sanctioned, 'sacred' words, these men and women--past and present--feed in themselves an unquenchable egomania. THEIR own words become in their own minds 'sacred' and unquestionable. Despite the fact these people are of course flawed, with their own prejudices, misconceptions, blind spots, and mental, psychological, and emotional shortcomings. Some, to be sure, deliberately manipulate, but I think mostly they believe their own erroneous thinking. So, something inherently 'good' is channeled in a necessarily 'bad' direction, because those in positions of authority are not 'saints,' but very, very, unavoidably, human themselves.

Many who rebel against religious indoctrination go through a gradual metamorphosis; so are naturally older. Agnostics (and atheists) are not, also, compelled to convert others to their point of view, because of the nature of the beliefs (or non-beliefs) themselves. No rewards or punishments for increasing the 'flock!' Except for the U.S. among Western nations, non-belief is not a big deal, right? Americans are more oppressed by majority religionists, so come to a site like this to find like-minded people. Most are cowed by their communities into remaining silent. It is only here we find out our numbers are much greater than it seems! I personally don't consider this a "dating site," though it IS what initially attracted me. It took me about three visits to find out there is MUCH more--and more valuable--to it than that! I've no idea the demographics. Never thought of it before. It had nothing to do with "white backlash" in the sense Obama was president. There WAS a backlash against pro-Muslim immigration, however. There was also a backlash against Obama policies concerning the so-called 'Arab Spring.' These might be tied indirectly to his blackness and his name (which does sound Muslim). Sounds sophmoric, but that's hardly surprising given the voters we're talking about! There's no denying it'd be ill-advised to nominate an openly gay or atheist candidate. I emphasize "openly." Jewish? Probably be also risky, to a lesser, but significant, degree.

Storm1752 comments on Feb 11, 2020:
I know what you're saying, but I'd put it a little differently. Brought up Catholic, my rational opinions clash daily with my indoctrination. It makes it hard to be honest and intimate with myself. If I have these constant internal clashes, how can I present myself as an integrated human being to another person? It's not that I, as an Agnosticist, question my own opinions; it's rather my opinions clash internally with my conditioning from birth to approximately, oh, age 10 or so. So a distrust of other's opinions is a constant, nagging reality. This makes true intimacy difficult. To contradict myself (common), I've found I'm never sure whether I really believe what I'm saying is really what I think, or is just what is convenient to say at that particular moment. Some may think, 'He's not being honest with me.' That's why I always use 'weasal words' to make clear I truly don't KNOW what I think! I think this is why my religious 'brainwashing' will always interfere with intimacy with myself another person people in general.

Storm1752 comments on Feb 11, 2020:
The TECHNICAL definitions of the three "isms" do not tell the whole story. The COMMONLY UNDERSTOOD definitions are much more meaningful, because clearer and simpler to understand. Clarity is everything when discussing this subject. *Atheist--doesn't believe in a 'god;' that is, a separate, distinct entity involved personally in an individual's life. *Agnosticist--neither believes nor disbelieves in a personal, separate entity called 'god.' *Theist--believes in a personal 'god.' This is simple, to the point, no hairsplitting, and delineates the significant differences.. Contrary to some perspectives, they are distinct, separate categories; an Agnosticist and an Atheist and a Theist all vehemently disagree with each other, despite claims by many Atheists THIS is the source of endless arguments, Agnosticists do NOT IDENTIFY ANY MORE WITH ATHEISTS THAN THEY DO THEISTS. It's like Christians seeing a 'bond' between themselves and Jews, but Jews seeing very few, if any, 'bonds' with Christians. The reasons for this are clear and obvious, but many Christians refuse to accept them. The 'debate' will continue, despite the fact there is no real issue. Atheists refuse to accept the clear and obvious reasons why Agnosticists disagree with them as much as they do Theists. Absolutely REFUSE. This is why it is NOT possible to be an 'Agnostic Atheist' any more than it is possible to be an 'Christian Atheist.' But try telling them that. It is not possible to simultaneously 'not believe in god' AND to 'not take a position on the question.' Similarly, it is not possible to 'not believe in god' and 'believe in god.' Similarly, it is not possible to 'believe in god' AND 'not take a position on the matter.' This is why most Agnosticists resent other 'isms' grafting their 'ism' onto theirs: because it obscures and cheapens the very real and substantial differences among the three. It makes it difficult or impossible to: 1) carve out their own identity, and 2) discuss the implications and meaning of this very distinct point of view. When asked, an agnostic person can only say he or she 'doesn't know' if there is or is not a 'god.' He or she is NOT saying, 'I haven't made up my mind yet.' NOT saying, ' When I DO make up my mind I'll let you know.' As far as they are concerned, they HAVE made up their minds and it's highly unlikely they will ever change their minds. Why? Because there is nothing to change, unless new, indisputable evidence comes to light. The chances of that happening are slim, at least in any of our lifetimes. But I get the feeling my words here will make no difference. And that's depressing.

I might vote for Bloomberg if he gets traction. Is he Jewish? Hope not! I'D still vote for him, but the yahoos might not. Btw, when are we going to get a Balanced Budget Amendment with a 4/5 majority in both houses needed to exceed spending limits? We'd need all that 'filthy rich' revenue if that happens! Plus we'd have to (gasp!) cut the military budget to something more closely resembling sanity. Maybe Mike can get that done. Heck, maybe he can even change us over to a national sales tax, so EVERYBODY pays in, not just the middle class! Your biggest clunker is thinking he wants a "revolution" via an armed insurrection. I don't think you really believe that. A peaceful revolution (like giving Democrats huge majorities in both houses of Congress PLUS the presidency) is more like it. Storm1752 comments on Feb 10, 2020:
I for one certainly don't feel sorry for our poor beleaguered Christians. Most of US were probably ones ourselves, so we know of what we speak. Their main problem seems to me, is they ARE in the process of losing their iron-clad grip on the hearts and minds of a significant number of people...good! No one is OBLIGATED to 'keep the faith' if their research and common sense leads them elsewhere. Sorry! Not into it anymore! Good luck with that! I personally keep a low profile and am hardly persecuting them or anybody else. What does that tell you? It tells ME if I was as stridently vocal about my beliefs as they are about theirs, I'd be lucky not to be run out of town on a rail, tar and feathers optional. Non-Christians are the discriminated-against minority. That's obvious to anyone who is one. We are gradually waking up to the fact Jesus is a fictitious person, to put it mildly, and if I refuse to continue to believe 'he' is 'god' (and I'M not), it's my right in a country with supposedly free speech and independent thought. Just am grateful I don't live in, for instance, Iran, where such 'blasphemy' would get me, minimum, thrown into prison and, maximum, stoned to death! Hopefully it stays that way.
Belief is back: why the world is putting its faith in religion
Storm1752 comments on Feb 9, 2020:
"The truth is the truth, even if no one believes it. A lie is a lie, even if everyone believes it."--unknown. "The truth will prevail where there is pains to bring it to light.'--George Washington, famous deist. As our knowledge of reality deepens, loyalty to falsity thins, weakens, and finally withers. It's been written, "Patriotism is the last refuge, to which a scoundrel clings;" patriotism, or false idols? Both? A foundation of lies, built on sand, easily washes away; a house of wood eventually decays and falls with the rain and wind. Build with stone, and lies are (or mere ignorance is) helpless in the end. Either we lived with dinosaurs or not...loud protestations notwithstanding. Either 'god' created the universe in six days or not...nonsense is irrelevant. Increasingly people know this, more strongly with each passing year. There is no 'tipping point,' in my opinion, just a gradual eating away at a weak foundation, while a stronger one takes it's place.
What if the money that is spent on religion throughout the world was instead spent on science?
Storm1752 comments on Feb 8, 2020:
Think of all the trillions we could free up with a World Government, maybe a confederation initially, then a federation! To make that happen, though, we'd first have to replace faith-based religion with science-based spirituality. The potential leap forward would be beyond transformational! Almost beyond imagination.

But I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you're really curious. The answer is NO. NOTE: I just read other responses and am very surprised. I don't think it IS a "meaningless world." It may be. It certainly seems that way at times. But I prefer 'natural law' and 'karma'-based justice. This prompts one to act morally even if (some) others act immorally, as if there are no consequences. I think we reap as we sow, are rewarded and punished in THIS life, and ones to come. Is this true? I don't know. There's plenty of evidence to indicate it is, but everybody's free to think what they want. If they DO actually believe life is "absurd," though, they'll be, like you, unhappy and pessimistic. Their choice. I personally see life as kind of a race between good and bad, optimism and pessimism, with ultimately a good outcome.

In this world we are hearing of the evil of terrorism.
Storm1752 comments on Feb 3, 2020:
Unless we become one, single "tribe?" Perhaps the "evil" of which you speak is really just a transition period, brought on by our rapidly developing communications technology? As "tribes," grew in size, first Very small units, then Villages, then Cities, City states, Nation states, Finally Confederations and Federations between and among nations, doesn't a progression to a One World Government seem inevitable? As warring "tribes" come into close proximity geographically, friction was--and still is--inevitable. But in the Internet Age, geography is increasingly irrelevant, right? The friction these days comes more from a clash of the very ideas on which cultures, including especially RELIGION, are based. Ergo: Are we on the cusp of the formation of entirely new religions, eventually melding into a single religion, one which reflects the state of our rapidly increasing scientific knowledge? THIS religion, based on fact rather than ignorance, would have to be, would be, flexible enough to change and grow as our understanding of the universe evolves. So if you put on your rose-colored glasses, this "evil" may be in fact a very good thing. (If we don't destroy ourselves first.) P.S. Being anti-theist, I'm using the word "religion" very loosely, it's amended definition (or maybe we need a different word) meaning 'pursuit of answers to basic remaining questions as to our still mysterious origins.' If there is such a thing. Maybe some "mysteries" will remain. But I doubt it.
Could I be considered an atheist or a deist?
Storm1752 comments on Feb 1, 2020:
Yeah that's how I think. Look up 'neo-deist' and you'll find that sentiment. So I'm an agnostic neo-deist. Today, anyway. I just have ideas here, there, and everywhere, depending on which way the wind is blowing, secure in the knowledge I don't have to believe IN or not believe IN anything. For instance, I don't think there such a thing as "determinalism," because even 'god' couldn't know the future. What's my "evidence?" I don't have any! See? It's easy! Likewise, I don't think the physical world was ever "created" because it's always been here. The Big Bang was just the beginning of another of an infinite number of cycles. No proof, just my feeling. Agnostics don't need evidence or proof when it comes to the Great Mysteries because if there was any to begin with they wouldn't be mysteries. Atheists and theists err by constantly bickering over this inconvenient fact. Theists: no proof needed, faith is enough. Atheists: faith insufficient, proof essential! Yada yada yada.

Storm1752 comments on Jan 17, 2020:
I asked the same question a different way a while ago. I don't think it's possible to believe something you know isn't true That's absurd. But many people truly believe things OTHER people know aren't true, and they SHOULD know we aren't true as well. That happens all the time. When given a choice between two equally believable things, I will choose to believe the option most beneficial to me. Even if the most beneficial thing is slightly less believable, I'd want to believe it SO MUCH I probably would.

Storm1752 comments on Jan 17, 2020:
This is obvious. We want to know who we are, where we came from, etc., and with our limited past knowledge, religion was the way a lot of people answered those questions. Now, as our knowledge increases, the old answers no longer make sense. A lot of people have trouble dealing with that, so they cling to the old answers til the bitter end! However, modern people apply today's knowledge to these questions and are coming up with new answers. Constant updates are necessary as our knowledge continues to increase. End of story.

Marriage was never for me, but I never wanted children either. If children are involved, a contract is practically mandatory. That way, even if the marriage itself dissolves, both parties are legally responsible to support the child or children until they're ready to make it on their own (and/or 18 years old). That's only fair. AND there's always the dividing of assets. Otherwise, strictly a personal call
How do people feel about pulling good guy (or good person) deeds as an atheist?
Storm1752 comments on Jan 17, 2020:
Pulling good guy deeds? (I'll answer that 'cause the rest of your posts is about something else. I don't see the connection.) Anyway, my impulse to do "good deeds" used to be a lot stronger, frankly. Now it's leavened by being taken advantage a few times too often. Not by doing the good deed, necessarily--though that has happened--but more often by, say, being betrayed by people I thought were friends. Or in some other way being shown the dark side of human nature. The counterpoint to this have been times I've been shown acts of kindness when I was 'down and out' and about to get REALLY hurt. Looking back now, it probably wasn't ever as bad as it seemed, but it sure felt like it, and I think a person or two FELT the hurt was GENUINE and took pity on me. So I use that as my guide when deciding whether or not to be a "good guy" and go out of my way to help someone. Otherwise, I like to give change to panhandlers (been there), drop money in charity jars, and in general try to strike "grace notes" in my everyday dealings. People recognize and appreciate someone making an effort to be a straight arrow without being showy about it. Finally, it all gets down to this: contrary to what the bible says, I'm convinced most people enjoy following their conscience and doing the right thing, and they HATE violating their personal code of conduct and screwing people over. Being a "good guy" is enjoyable, so I am one.

What IS it he wrote in that post which made you curious about him? Just curious. No, I don't think the two conflict at all, btw. Every relationship starts with a first time, either as a "hookup." or after several dates, until she is 'sure.' Yes, I know, a "hookup" is defined as a one-time encounter, but that encounter could be so breathtakingly great a relationship is born. It happens. A lot. Likewise, an intended LTR may fizzle out after several dates, ironically--maybe--after the sex finally happens. So a "hookup" may last for the rest of both their lives. A LTR may last a few dates. Maybe ONE date. Nothing is guaranteed.
God is not necessary for religion.
Storm1752 comments on Jan 13, 2020:
The Buddhists may have it right: the universe, according to them, is in a eternal cycle of birth, expansion, contraction, death, and rebirth. In other words, the "big bang" has happened an infinite number of times and will continue on and on into eternity. So according to them, nobody or nothing created it in the first place, and nobody or nothing will ever destroy it, in the final analysis. They say, when all is said and done, it has ALWAYS been here and it always will be. It explodes into existence from a microscopic speck, expands until it burns itself out, implodes back into a microscopic speck, and explodes outward again, they say. No 'god,' no assembly, required. Unless, of course, EVERYTHING is 'god,' and WE will eventually become 'gods' again, as we have already become on countless worlds here, there, and everywhere, forever and ever, amen. How's THAT for a line of b--lsh-t a mile long? Religion is like that. So be it.
God is not necessary for religion.

The best thing about being agnostic is knowing (as much as it is humanly possible) there is no hell.
Storm1752 comments on Jan 11, 2020:
Note: surprised so many are focusing on the obvious: no hell. That was just my starting-off point. I was focused on what that realization MEANS in terms of liberating the mind to consider the REAL situation we find ourselves in. All kinds of ideas about that, as I said, but at least WE are free to discuss them without being bogged down by that particular baggage (which for those with it, weighs 500 million tons, at least).

Storm1752 comments on Jan 10, 2020:
If there were no religion, that would mean we're ALL agnostic. Personally, I don't think about it all that much anyway, because I just have made peace ith the fact I have no idea, WILL never know, so what's the sense thinking/talking about it all the time? As the Desiderata says, 'the universe is unfolding as it should,' so all you can do is make your way in life as best you can, be a good person, serve out your sentence, and die an honorable death. It's fun to speculate about though, and since we've got to talk about SOMETHING, it's always a good topic of conversation.

Storm1752 comments on Jan 9, 2020:
Atheism is MIS-DEFINED, relative to agnosticism. By that I mean, the TECHNICAL definition does not equate with the commonly understood one, which holds atheists claim, aver, declare and BELIEVE god DOES NOT EXIST. ONE CANNOT BE AN AGNOSTIC ATHEIST, PERIOD, any more than one can be atheistic agnostic. Agnostics neither believe nor disbelieve. Atheism, on the other hand, is a BELIEF SYSTEM. Put another way, a true atheist cannot at the same time claim god does not exist and say he has no opinion on the matter, or doesn't know one way or the other. That is an irreconcilable contradiction. Therefore, someone who CALLS himself or herself an "agnostic atheist" is an ATHEIST who wishes to attach "reasonableness" to an unreasonable position. So, Atheism is a fraudulent, unsustainable belief, in the same way THEISM is. Neither can be defended. One cannot rationally say, "god does not exist." There is NO evidence. One cannot rationally say, God exists. There is no evidence. Rather, they have evidence a certain KIND of god does not exist, a much more unremarkable viewpoint, and one I as an agnostic share. It doesn't take a genius to KNOW an Abrahamic god is an impossibility! Some OTHER kind of god? Who knows? Maybe, maybe not. An "atheist" unjustifiably says THAT kind of god doesn't exist, either. An agnostic embraces an attitude of open-mindedness, NOT disbelief. There is a huge and untransversible chasm between the two positions.

Storm1752 comments on Jan 8, 2020:
I tried reading a lot of this but when are people going to learn long-windedness does not equal wisdom. All it does it discourage understanding, because the writer is obviously trying to create a thought- system to fit his or her preconceived notions, and persuade by unnecessarily complicating what is at heart a very simple proposition. To wit: the sign of maturity is to signal to others one is a good person, without guile, hidden agendas, lies and deceit. These others then give to that person in return what he or she needs to be happy. This is the ideal. It is a straightforward trade. One is motivated by self-interest always, by maximum material, emotional, and psychological security, acquired honestly. Selfishness is excess gain acquired dishonestly. Pleasure equals happiness, and to repeat, is experienced by material and other comforts earned and rewarded in equal measure--giving and receiving in proper and appropriate proportion.. (If another is unrightfully in a distressed situation, giving aid and comfort is what the giver would expect if he or she was in similar straits. Thus equilibrium is restored.) Therefore, the Golden Rule is always the best and only guide for a mature person, who realizes the only way to achieve true happiness is by exchanging favors, benefits and whatever else is desired. Violate this basic rule, and one has delivered to oneself and others a wound; obey it, and one experiences and causes in others satisfaction and well-being. If this sounds naive, it's because the ideal has not been achieved. To the extent the rule is violated individually or collectively, to that extent a person or society suffers.
What is the one Truth or Method of finding the truth that you hold sacred above all others?
