I'm sure many people on here have religious friends and family members that get on your nerves.

I'd rather cut off my hand than engage my handyman Christian contractor in a debate over the existence of god! He'd probably end up storming off mid-project! No thanks! (That goes for every Christian I know.)

Storm1752 comments on Jan 3, 2020:
This is a very useful scale, which points out the crucial difference between Atheists and Agnostics. If 1 is pure theist, and 7 is pure atheist, then 3.5 would be 'pure' agnostic, right? Wrong. Agnostics don't belong on a 'scale of belief,' because they neither believe nor disbelieve. So...5.25 would be agnostic atheist, and 2.25 would be agnostic theist? No. There is no such thing as either one. But tell that to someone who labels herself or himself that way. An "agnostic atheist" would be a person who neither believes or disbelieves AND, at the same time, absolutely (or 68%) disbelieves. Same with an "agnostic theist." It's a self-contradictory label. It doesn't work. So if anything this scale is for atheists and theists ONLY...not for Agnostics.

Storm1752 comments on Jan 3, 2020:
7, I guess, if the Abrahamic Purple Dragon. Not ON the scale as an agnostic, so I'm free to speculate if 'god' might be an existential 'force' within the framework of natural law. There definitely ARE physical laws, obviously. If the sum total of them can be said to have 'consciousness,' and we were able to devise a means of detecting it and tapping into it, theoretically the existence of 'god' could be detected and 'proven.' These are huge hypotheticals, of course, but not as far-fetched, I think, as some '6.9 atheists' would have you believe. It's equally possible there is no such 'collective consciousness,' but that won't stop scientists from looking for it, and many other things some people don't "believe." There is certainly plenty of circumstantial evidence pointing to phenomena beyond our comprehension, even if that evidence is routinely ignored by the '6.9ers;' it DOES exist, however.. I await the results of this ongoing inquiry with moderate and skeptical interest.

I tried the 'peeping tom' route when in fifth grade, it was great but then I realized youthful thrills might lead to Big Trouble down the road, so I rescued myself from near-certain perdition. Porn is much safer. The difference between that and pictures of exquisite near-nudity resides in the lurker! As a porn afficiando, it's a meaningless distinction. In the WRONG hands, however, creepiness may be the result! I'm not concerned. Call me an idealistic fool, but I subscribe to the scribbling of Keats: "Truth is beauty, beauty truth. Storm1752 comments on Jan 1, 2020:
What is so fascinating? It's obvious: Smaller societies went to war over religion AND economics, power, culture, race, etc., just as they do today. The WINNERS absorbed the losers into their (now larger) society and thus expanded, but it wasn't JUST religion which caused conflict in the first place, but a host of factors. In conflicts between sects of the same religion (and culture, race, etc.), this absorption would relatively 'easy' and complete. Nations were the end result. Between DIFFERENT cultures (and, later, nations) conflict (and, later, war) would be much harder; complete assimilation all but impossible. The bottom line is, one factor (religion) cannot be viewed in isolation and said to be THE reason for conflict and war between societies. At best religion can be a useful way to chart and document the success of a militarily victorious society over a vanguished one, because it gets to write the history, establish the dominant culture and religion, etc. In some EXTREME cases, the victorious society might even be able to create and establish a totally NEW religion, as it is argued by some the Romans did with Christianity.

Storm1752 comments on Dec 28, 2019:
I doubt spiritual beliefs, or lack thereof, have much to do with one's level of personal happiness. But it might have SOMETHING to do with it; with loss of faith one gains a sense of freedom from burdensome religious guilt, from books, people, tv, deep-seated conditioning, etc. Once free of THAT, it might make dealing with other problems easier, if not solved. However, some things might get harder! Maybe a 'crutch' is lost, or friends disappear, or gone is the comfort 'god' is intimately involved in your life. Like drinking...stop, and lots of things get better; BUT lots of lesser things get lost. It takes time and effort to sort it all out. Overall, I feel closer to the truth, more appreciative of my life in general, which makes it a net gain. That said, it's very hard for me to accept many of the things about the way I am. Nor do I think I SHOULD accept them, if I think they can be ultimately improved. Tricky. One thing makes me feel better is knowing in the end it really doesn't MATTER all that much!

Because the schizophrenic bible is full of the stuff, along with the New Agey, wishy-washy, touchy-feely, platitudinous tripe, of course. Why do these people brag so much about being sinners, anyway? Is that their get-out-of-hell-free card? "I can sin all I want and I'm STILL going to heaven," they may as well crow. Sure, they're stealing, lying s.o.b.'s, but hey, they're baptized so it's okay! Not if 'god' was more subtle than that, perhaps a 'universal consciousness' not much different from other impersonal laws of nature like electromagnetism or the speed of light. Even without provocation, they mock agnostics who, for example, subscribe to purple dragons in the garage, unicorns, fairy castles in the sky, etc. It's really quite obnoxious how they distort the agnostic point of view by saying we 'believe in' god, when we actually have no firm opinion one way or the other, but merely entertain the possibility. I suspect it hasn't changed much.

Storm1752 comments on Dec 22, 2019:
Some Agnostics think there MAY be such a thing as 'god,' IF you define the term broadly enough to include non-entity concepts like universal consciousness. The universe is too big a place to close your mind entirely, people like me think. Agnostics DON'T KNOW if there's a 'god' or not; therefore, they are free (unlike atheists) to discuss both sides of the subject unbiased and not obligated to argue vociferously about it. As an atheist, you ARE biased, which is fine, but an agnostic "discussing" the topic with an atheist is is not likely to end fruitfully, but instead result in a circular, neverending argument going round and round like a circus ride.

Storm1752 comments on Dec 20, 2019:
I'm an 'agnostic neo-deist' today, since everybody, it seems, needs a label. But I don't KNOW that. So I'll just keep whistling along...

How many here think of themselves as skeptical thinkers?
Storm1752 comments on Dec 17, 2019:
I think god is everywhere and everything. No amount of "evidence" is enough. Any amount is too much. I come to my state of conciousness from all the experiences I've ever had, yet no specific experience caused me to think the way I do. The brain makes things up as it goes. Experiences combine and create ideas and images, which lead to others, and so on. There is no "religion," no top-down hierarchy of tenets to describe my point of view. The word 'god' itself is merely a concept without concrete form. All we have to go by ARE our experiences in the flesh-and-blood, three-dimensional universe. So I don't "question" god. Rather I constantly wonder what the word could possibly MEAN, after I've read or learned about all the different ways people define it, in books and other media. In other words, in a world awash in words, a "religious" text becomes simply one way to organize letters into words, but far from the ONLY way. My personal situation, likewise, is not a static thing, but always in flux, so my ideas about 'god' are always in flux as well.
exile in happy valley: The Panarchist Solution to a World Divided
Storm1752 comments on Dec 17, 2019:
It's becoming increasingly irrelevant WHAT form of world government will eventually emerge. Panarchy is just another label for a confederate system which may very well be a transitional compromise between the multi-state semi-anarchy we have now, and a completely unitarian one-world government. It may evolve slowly and largely unnoticed, as individual countries or constellations of countries enter into economic agreements which slowly grow and expand. However, all that will only reflect a fait-accompli RESULT of the ever-increasing interconnectedness of individual people, as borders become anachronistic after-thoughts. The communications revolution, defined and indirectly CAUSED by the aptly-named worldwide web, will make person-to-person financial exchanges more and more the norm. A man in Florida buying weaved blankets from a vendor in Zaire, for instance, or a merchant in Copenhagen bartering chocolate for gun parts from a dealer in Phoenix. Multiply that by trillions of trades and/or purchases, and these extra-government contacts will force established institutions to change and adapt to the new reality, via treaties and agreements acknowledging and formalizing dynamics beyond their control. In short, they will be obliged to preside over a transformation which they can either stand back and helplessly observe, OR cooperate with and preside over, but not CAUSE. This transformation will instead be spearheaded by technologies and innovations, not pieces of paper on a beauracrats' desk. Panarchy, if you will, may become therefore, a description rather than an invention. It will simply BE.
Great conversation about real history .

I went to the site of Renegade University and it looks amazing. I'll be looking into the philosophy, politics and ideology it illuminates. I WON'T be signing up because, as an agnostic, I'm instinctively resistant to any one particular point of view, belief system, or "solution" to the world's problems. If he and his friends want to think history happens from the "bottom up," fine, but it ALSO happens from the "top down" and in every other way imaginable. In an unregulated intellectual environment, ideas and actions are generated and implemented to and from EVERY direction! True, both the left and the right try to dominate the "marketplace of ideas," but so far the center has held. That may change, may be changing in fact, and THAT may be where we should be directing our energies! Anyway, I think there's a place in the world for BOTH lofty ideals AND degenerate slumming, asceticism and dissipated excess, the health spa and pigging out... AND a place for Republican Me-ism, and Democrat-social engineering. It all ends up in the middle eventually anyway.

A very f*cked up religion with lots of enemies; like all tribes back then, it was survival of the fittest. I'll give 'em this much: despite all odds, Judaism DID survive. Storm1752 comments on Dec 15, 2019:
Reminds me of a Virginia Woolf book, 'To the Lighthouse.' She thought life was mostly a losing battle to hold back the forces of chaos and decay: you build a cottage and paint it and make it beautiful, and in a few years you have to repaint, replace a few boards on the front porch, and so on... Every year it's even more paint and boards and repair the front latch and pull the weeds and wash the windows and...a neverending cycle, working harder and harder just to keep up. Then...every now and then, everything comes together in a golden, crystalline interlude when everything is in perfect balance, and true happiness flows out of every crease and crevasse, and the world makes sense; everything is harmonious and it was all worthwhile, after all.. Then back to the daily business of just trying to survive! Well, Virginia filled her pockets with rocks and walked into the river one day, so she eventually lost the war, as we all do... But she did have a good life, I understand, while it lasted.

Is that a feminist manifesto, and a salute to a great young generation? Or sarcasm?

With my handyman, who's helping me build an addition to my house. After that comes a pond, 30'x30'x6'...with a fountain in the middle. Hopefully it will attract insect-devouring bats to my property. Other than that, I'm currently alone, mostly my decision, a time of solitude to recharge and reset my life and my 'agenda.' I do not recognize the holidays as a collection of days somehow more special than any other days. They are all special.

Storm1752 comments on Nov 26, 2019:
It all amounts to this: 1) The world's problems are all but insurmountable, which is why the super rich are constructing underground bunkers/cities to which they will escape when necessary, 2) Identity politics/ideology is irrelevant. Once the REAL problems emerge, we will all be "us" and we will all be "them " 3) The "real" solutions are already out of reach (overpopulation, diminishing resources, etc.) and will be addressed only at the tipping point of no return, when our current "problems" become full-blown global emrrgencies, 4) Then will follow a period of hardship and deprivation, disease and war, which will shock us into finally casting aside obsolete religions/cultures in favor of pragmatic updates, 5) World government will be established. (That is, if anything is to be done at all.)
How corporate America invented ‘Christian America’ to fight the New Deal
Storm1752 comments on Nov 26, 2019:
I like football as much as the next fan, but the NFL marries corporate America, the military, and Christianity into a new form of anti-pagan nation-worship heretofore unseen. The national anthem doesn't replace the Lord's Prayer as much as stand in for it. Let's all bow down to our "heroes." I find it revolting.
One thing that puzzles me about believers in any religion is the conviction that it’s their God ...
Storm1752 comments on Nov 26, 2019:
Look at your own beliefs...are you not convinced of their specialness? You may say, 'Yes, but they're based on fact.' That may be true, but each person is equally convinced of the legitimacy of their reasons for believing what they do. Just because your reasons are better doesn't change that.
What made you change from believer to non-believer?
Storm1752 comments on Nov 25, 2019:
Reading historical records.
I had a friend whose life was in a state of chaos.

Are Non Believers More Prone To Using Profanity?
Storm1752 comments on Nov 25, 2019:
No. Less so because there's so much less to swear about. It is what it is, is my attitude.

Hey you sexy people. Anyone have some fun going on?

I'm thinking 'cat.' I'm in the deep woods. Cats keep themselves clean, keep critters away. I just have my fantasies and memories, which sometimes meld together to great effect. I'll leave it at that.

Pure semantics. Disbelief and non-belief are the same exact thing. I'm agnostic, not atheist. Big difference.

Why don't you just read some the countless case histories and decide for yourself if reincarnation is a "thing" or not? Getting our opinions isn't going to decide it for you. Check it out yourself.
Great question from another site, Jesus was a carpenter what did he build ?

Good afternoon! Almost Friday, yay! So ... popcorn or M&M's?

It’s time for us to have an unapologetic atheist in the Oval Office

How about an unapologetic agnostic?
Religion or Culture or Both
Storm1752 comments on Nov 18, 2019:
Sometimes it boggles my mind the questions some people ask. You're obviously talking about Islam, so why don't you just say so? My answer is a resounding NO regardless of what religion they're talking about.

Sorry, but a silly, pointless question.
In case you missed it.
Storm1752 comments on Nov 18, 2019:
It's a plot to get Mike Pence elected! He's much more the right-wing fundamentalist Christian true believing fanatic the 'base' goes nuts over. He has none of the Looney Tunes baggage Trump has, won't energize the Democrats, and stands a better chance of sneaking into office, than Trump has of blustering his way there for a second term. Does the Donald DESERVE to be thrown out? Of course. But he won't be, unless it really IS a plot, and liberals should know it'd be potentially even worse if he is.
What do you all think of my answer to why women can't wear latex everyday? [quora.com]
Storm1752 comments on Nov 18, 2019:
I think your ANSWER was sexy without even trying to be. Lately I've been wearing surgical-grade stockings doing work around my (secluded) yard, and I have to admit the sensation is sensual. Not that I'm thinking about sex cutting brush, but I couldn't help but think, 'So this is what it feels like. Women must be horny all the time.' Now, I know they're not, but don't know why.
Worth trying.
Storm1752 comments on Nov 17, 2019:
Worth trying? That's sounds like you think we COULD try it. It's not our call.
Most of the world now thinks religion is the cause of the world's problems! [usnews.com]
Storm1752 comments on Nov 17, 2019:
Politics and religion are often tied together. I'm glad I'll probably be dead in 2050, if that's what we have to look forward to, but I'm hesitant to agree the number of non-religious will dwindle. I DO agree Islam is a real and growing danger, another version of Naziism, and will be the cause of the next Big War, if we are stupid enough to fight one. The sooner religion is stamped out, the better. I think fundamentalist ANYTHING is a threat, including, to a comparatively miniscule degree, atheism. Closemindedness is the real enemy.
