Storm1752 comments on Sep 29, 2019:
It's taken away a lot of guilt for having normal human reactions to normal human situations. Instead of thinking I had to strive for absurdly impossible religious "perfection," and that I'd be judged and meted out rewards and punishments accordingly, I see every good and bad deed as rewards and punishments in and of themselves, to be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. I still have my same strict conscience and same high standards of right and wrong, but I'm easier on myself when I screw up. After all, I only human.

Good morning .
Storm1752 comments on Sep 28, 2019:
I've always found what ennevates is the FEAR of danger...once it occurs you simply deal with it while it is happening, and when it is over you both 1) shake your head in amazement you made it through, 2) deal with the aftermath. It is really all you can do. If you were at fault in any way it is a time for self-reflection and learning; if not, a stoic attitude is appropriate: it was out of your control---you could neither see it coming, nor do anything other than what you did to cope...therefore, there is nothing to reflect upon except, perhaps, the sordid state of some men's minds. Either way, the event itself is over. Accept it, deal with it, and move on.
I've just begun my 59th year, and it was a pretty sweet and sensuous start.

DO YOU THINK DISORGANIZED (NEW AGE) RELIGION IS AS BAD AS ORGANIZED RELIGION?
Storm1752 comments on Sep 19, 2019:
Not really. Not a lot of it, which is vague mysticism, a restless search for meaning and purpose. I've largely abandoned most of my New Age beliefs, but not all. I still think some things about it are not bogus, in my opinion. Plus it's SO disorganized it hardly is a threat, politically, culturally, etc., and is benign.

Spoken like a true agnostic. I WILL say certain historical facts are stubborn enough to strongly indicate certain probabilities on which to build reasonable arguments pro or con a given point of view. (The historicity of 'Jesus Christ, for instance.) But that's all. Many things about life are at present unknowable. SOME things will always be thus. Deal with it.

Just avoid the trap no one is as good as your departed So many women hold onto an idealized MEMORY of a past love, so make absurdly unrealistic comparisons between that MEMORY, and the flesh-and-blood person right in front of them! They forget the beginning of a relationship is often touch-and-go to downright rocky, so it takes a minor 'miracle' for it to happen in the first place! They forget the naivete of youth may what allows it to occur. If young people had as much "baggage" as older people, the human race may have gone extinct a long time ago! It takes time to get to know a unique entity, and many women are "picky" to a ridiculous degree, excluding practically everybody--except maybe pathological liars--from their lists of eligible candidates! So please regain some of that youthful idealism before you begin a serious search. Experience is a two-edge sword!

Quoting a line from the otherwise excellent Desiderata: "Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be." Now rephrase: Therefore, be at peace with god, whatever you conceive god to be. Since as a "deist" I can leave open to my imagination what "god" might conceivably be (being non-delusional, I have NO idea) I can allow myself to take that to mean, be at peace with yourself. If there IS a meaningful definition of "god," maybe being at peace with oneself is the same as being at peace with "god?" That is, for people of sound mind, without sociopathic tendencies.

Strong men need to be rewarded. Too many women reward bad behavior by rewarding men on the basis of power, status, and money. These men know they can get away with just about anything because there's a line of beautiful, desirable women queing up for them regardless of their obvious (and sometimes not so immediately apparent) flaws. We've all heard the (haha) joke about a woman who can fall in love with a poor man of sterling character, or a rich man who "needs a little housebreaking." Look, in olden times, it's a given the rich man could better provide for the wife and children, so of course was a more sought-after mate. The argument can be made it's still in our genes. But we live in the 21st Century. Times have changed for many modern, enlightened people in a very short time. We are animals, so our genetic makeup is still going to have an influence. But a woman's choices have expanded (for some) and the patriarchal system is now optional. There's nothing wrong with being rich and powerful, but it shouldn't be the only scale by which we measure a man's worth. I'm not saying any of this applies to the people reading this, but they are for the most part not "typical," and many (most?) people simply follow their lizard brains and also their monetary interests, the higher faculties be damned. The massive inertia of this state of affairs in "society in general" becomes our culture and, therefore, reality itself. That being the case, a counterculture is necessary if one wishes to escape the toxic influence of this corrupted and morally bankrupt status quo. Therefore, some men who follow a different drummer (than the "norm") are among us but get NO attention from the dominant culture. They should be rewarded, as I'm sure you agree.

According to the god nuts, a baby gets a free pass to heaven, right? So an aborted fetus (if you can call that a 'baby'--I don't) would go directly to an eternity of bliss. No living a life with all its temptations, so no risk of going to hell. So we'd actually be doing all these "babies" a favor by aborting them. We should be aborting MORE babies if that's the case, not fewer! We have a terrible overpopulation problem. I'm for asking pregnant women to volunteer for the heaven-assuring procedure. This may only apply to Jews, Christians, and Muslims, but that's still a lot of souls being saved from the dangers of actually living a life full of sin and depravity. Abortion "problem" solved.
Why are the liberals blaming white supremacist’s for mass shootings?
Storm1752 comments on Aug 6, 2019:
I'm one liberal who doesn't follow mass shootings any more than I do the rest of the news. Mass shootings have become boringly routine anyway. Who cares if it's a terrorist, or a lone wolf, a white supremicist, a drug-crazed lunatic, whatever... Equally indifferent am I to the outcries for gun control; IT DOESN'T MATTER! That horse left the barn a long time ago. Oh, it'll eventually happen, closing the gun show loophole and what have you, but with over 350 million guns in private hands already (and more on the way), anything short of an outright ban and confiscation is pointless; nothing nothing else would help. Even THAT won't help, for obvious reasons. In the long run, the only thing even remotely feasible (and I'm talking 50 years or so, after the yahoos stage a revolution, or an organized militia storms a city and takes out oh, 10,000 people or so) is either a repeal of the Second Amendment, or a drastic overhaul of same to clear up the ambiguous and contradictory language. How, I ask you, can a militia be "well-regulated" and at the same time the right to own arms shall "not be abridged?" Good question. It was a different time with drastically different conditions, but the battle for states' rights versus the dominance of a central government is STILL being waged. Back then the states were like separate countries. State militias were a bulwark against a dictatorial king siezing power. The yahoos STILL think that's possible. The Christians think it'll be the Antichrist (guns will be ineffectual in that case. Says so in the bible, right down there in black and white). Maybe someday a Hitler WILL sieze power; anything's possible. And the militias, self-styled and real, will rise up and overthrow him. The Second Amendment will have saved us all...hooray! There are people who actually believe that. Probably the same people who think the world was created 6000 years ago. Yawn. So spare me the latest mass shooting. It's hopeless. Nothing can or will be done. Not in my lifetime. Besides, Jesus is coming back (lol) so guns are the least of our problems.

Not that it matters what I think, but I'm as anti-theist as it gets. Similarly, until Trump (who is non-theist, maybe even atheist for all I know), my attitude toward people who don't VOTE was bemused, appalled resignation. Now, I hate them. To allow the theists to take over the government lock, stock, and barrel is absolutely criminally immoral. To allow these people to ruin other people's lives, the environment, culture, science, the hopes and dreams of good people everywhere, is an unspeakable disgrace. By "theists" I assume you mean Abrahamic theology, which calls for the complete destruction of the planet and everything on it. What disgusting religions! So if anybody reading this hates theists, but doesn't VOTE, you're as bad as they are. Don't bother hating them; hate yourself. (Oh, I'm 100% agnostic.)
Was/is Roseanne a Trump supporter?
Storm1752 comments on Aug 5, 2019:
The only sense it could possibly make is, some people vote purely on the visceral level, with their "gut," emotions, instinct, rather than their intellect. Some people didn't "like" Hillary, "liked" Trump. It didn't matter what they stood for, how they conducted themselves, behaved, treated other people, where they stood on the issues, none of that. It is repulsive, everything which is wrong with American society and its "electorate." The irony is, lots of these people VOTE; lots of good, rational, caring people do not.
Why should agnostics/atheists hide this about themselves?
Storm1752 comments on Aug 3, 2019:

I might rejoin, "Well, it'd nice, right? That's what I said." And laugh. I just don't engage. If you want to, go ahead.

Sooo....not a conscious effort by the "establishment" to "normalize" things and get back to the business of stealing from the poor, soaking it up by the rich? Maybe not. But that famous 1971 memo from Supreme Court Justice Lewis Powell to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce comes to mind. He urged the right-wing to forge what Hillary would later call a "vast conspiracy" to form think tanks, legal foundations, campus organizations, etc., to stop liberalism in its tracks and reverse many New Deal policies, laws, legal decisions, etc. It called for infiltrating and eventually taking over the media, arts and entertainment, as well as other opinion-making institutions. While some have downplayed the actual influence of the memo, it does seem eerily prescient of what either has already happened or is in the process of happening. Most recently, the end of net neutrality has already resulted in a drastic change in the internet, with more tightening down to certainly come. In fact, I predict sites like Agnostics may soon be a thing of the past, shut down completely or rendered virtually inaccessible. So it doesn't seem a stretch to me that the end of the pre-eminence of folk and rock espousing countercultural ideals was one of the early casualties of what would later to known as the "culture wars." Who says the people who now control the airwaves (like Clear Channel) didn't back then make a deliberate and concerted effort to steer the music industry away from movement politics by creating a new fad to take its place (sort of like the Romans creating Christianity to replace Judaiism, lol). Voila, Disco!

As an agnostic, they may have seen, detected, experienced, felt an electromagnetic resonance which they interpreted through a theistic lens, but was objectively present. That resonance could have been one aspect of the natural world which indicated an underlying commonality, which could be called 'god' broadly defined. So while it MAY have been misinterpreted within a religious theology, whether 'Jesus' or 'Buddha,' 'Zeus' or 'Thor' or whatever, the phenomenon itself MAY have been authentic, and depending on the interpreter, beautiful, or awful, enigmatic, wondrous, terrifying or, yes, divine. The energy in the world is real and can be readily detected, measured, and quantified, but it MAY take extraordinary forms which appear strange, unreal, of supernatural origin. Whether from another realm, dimension, parallel universe (if any of that exists), or our own three-dimensional world, it must sometimes seem beautiful indeed.

But okay, what gives my life meaning... Me. I like myself, my biggest fan, and want to learn from my mistakes and have good experiences from now til the end. Thus far shortchanged, I want to know what it's like to be content. Not to please anybody else, not to depend on anybody else for my happiness. To be free of all co-dependencies and enjoy existing for its own sake. Why? It doesn't matter to the universe, but an innate instinct and desire to achieve a perfectly blanced state of being, or get an A for effort. It doesn't matter why. Perfect, except take "religion" out (although I understand what he means in context) and replace it with "striving for a perception greater than what the five senses allow to be perceived." Something like that. Religion itself was unfortunately hijacked by narrow-minded men who allowed their ego, self-interest, parochial concerns, and provincial nearsightedness to trump a greater understanding of the universe and man's place in it. I do agree atheists are so disillusioned and angry about the lies told by charlatans they've turned against ANY personal quest for meaning in their lives. These religion-creating liars cynically used a certain charisma and facility with words to gain power. Maybe they lied because they thought they could better mankind's lot by manipulating and tricking them into doing what THEY thought was the right thing, but had to be the wrong thing. They used those people's genuine search for the truth as leverage against them. It had to be something like that because, short of believing their own hallucinations, they must have known they were lying. But Einstein was right, men instinctly strive for greater and greater understanding. It's a shame that instinct has been used against them.

I like two (or more) women, but I agree it's HARD to find a lot which is inspired, decent scenario, good dialogue, etc. That's all-important because so much of the arousal depends on being able to involve yourself mentally and emotionally, and relatively little on the sex itself. Unfortunately almost all of it is by-the-numbers, cookie-cutter dreck (albeit with stunningly beautiful naked hotties). As for my least favorite, just not interested in watching men, except occasionally two-men oral can be sort of kinky, as long as they're not old, fat, and hairy!

Nothing! We.Just.Don't.Know. Period. What's more, we don't need to know. That's what separates us from you. And theists. And pantheists. And all the rest. Oh we speculate, wonder, have opinions---lots and lots of opinions---but what makes us different, unique, is we know the difference between informed guesswork, and certainty. We know we are a part of something we cannot possibly understand, and knowing that sets us free, fills us with joy, and opens our eyes to the true mystery and wonder of our existence. No, we are NOT atheists. Big difference.

I have been beating that (very much alive) horse forever. People need to vote, not just in presidential years, but EVERY TWO YEARS! There is absolutely no reason these people should be in power. None. Most people don't agree with them. So they need to take a tiny fraction of their precious time, get their fannies in gear, and say so where it matters most--not at the local bar, not pontificating from their couch--at the polling station. It's not that hard, y'all! They check your I.D., give you a ballot, direct you to a booth, even give you a little sticker, 'I voted,' when you leave! It's all good! So do it!

I agree with you. The goal should be to ELIMINATE as many jobs as possible, freeing up people to create, invent, improve themselves and in general realize their potential. It WOULD take a paradigm shift in the way we think of, well, everything, so it can't be forced. It will happen as technology advances, over many generations, and only if society overcomes itself and finds a way to survive. I believe we are at a crossroads, and the future you envision will be part and parcel of that survival...the two will happen simultaneously, or not at all. But no question: technology is not the enemy. I believe it will eventually save us from ourselves.

You've put a lot of thought into all that, but as a professional journalist I'd suggest to you what I would to a lot of people on here: figure out what your unifying point is, and lead with that. Then lay out your premises and build your case.
Ever found love and got into a relationship with someone they met on agnostic?

I'm optimistic by nature, so you never know...but no. I lost my significant other more than three years ago now (to illness), and didn't care at all about ANYTHING for about two and a half years, but recently have started making an effort. Sure this is a great potential matchmaker site, so I've begun talking to women with that in mind, while enjoying some great conversations. I know I'm "strange" and not for everybody, but I've lots of good qualities too. This is all new, so I've been: evaluating my approach, eliminating self-defeating thoughts and words, pinpointing level of interest, thinking positive. I still see this primarily as a forum for discussion, information sharing, etc., but it might work in other ways. The fog's lifted from the past, and frankly I'm ready for new adventures. So no, not yet...maybe never. That's okay. I have a stoic attitude. As usual, I'll do my best and hope someone's listening. P.S. I've been looking over my messages the last few months are perhaps I'm being disingenuous. I'm getting very little if ANY positive response. But no choice...I'll soldier on.

Sounds reasonable. He'll probably go back to maybe agnosticism, at the very least, which would be preferable in some people's eyes. Maybe he wants peer interaction? Nothing to be done anyway. Might as well go with it, eh?

Storm1752 comments on Jul 15, 2019:
In what was is religion the same as government? I see no similarity whatsoever. A religion can BE a government...that's a theocracy. The U.S. is very close to having one. But that's only because many more religious people VOTE.

Storm1752 comments on Jul 13, 2019:
The atheist and the deist are talking about an anthropomorphic, personal god-entity, one says it exists, the other says it doesn't. The agnostic agrees THAT kind of god could not and does not exist, in all likelihood, so in that narrow sense agrees with the atheist. He or she does NOT agree, however, with the assertion NO god exists. Maybe yes, maybe no. After a few go-arounds, the "debate" becomes repetitious and boring, which is why if you've been coming to this site for long, you eventually yield the floor and let the next "generation" of agnostics carry on the fight.

Storm1752 comments on Jul 10, 2019:
The New Atheists make a lot of good points and I've learned a lot listening to them. That said, the scientist and you are saying the exact same thing I've been saying since I came on here: atheism is bogus. I never thought of it precisely as "unscientific," but of course it is. It's also extremely obnoxious. Anyway, THANK YOU for sharing that. Now maybe our distant cousins will learn a little humility and finally realize the vast DIFFERENCE between agnosticism and atheism, and stop all the ceaseless, eternal arguments with agnostics about it. If they want to be "sure" about the non-existence of any order, pattern, coherent direction in the material world, fine. But I'm not. Those simple two facts speak VOLUMES about our relative perspectives: it seems like almost a trivial difference until you actually THINK about what it means about our respective worldviews, the difference between thinking: 1) life is meaningless, and 2) maybe life ISN'T meaningless. That's probably why atheists are such crabapples about everthing, while agnostics are so cheerful and happy!😀 Thanks again. P.S. You have to know and be prepared for the inevitable firestorm you have now provoked. I do it sometimes and sit back and wait for the wave upon wave of atheistic hate to wash over me! In this sense they are just as bad (or worse) as an offended Christian or Muslim...how DARE they challenge the absolute TRUTH. It'd be funny if it wasn't so sickening.
To be Christian means to act like Christ did.
Storm1752 comments on Jul 10, 2019:
"Christ" didn't exist...a cardboard, made up character. Impossible to emulate, imitate, mimic, be like, etc. That's one reason Xtians are so conflicted. He's deliberately held up as an ,impossible-to-copy "role model." So it's a self-destructive fantasy to think you can "act like Christ." When you think about it, how did he "act?" Any clues to what he was "really like?" No. He went around performing miracles and making speeches. That's it. How is anyone supposed to "act like" that?
Women's sexual desire can alter our lives. Your thoughts?
Storm1752 comments on Jul 10, 2019:
What "thoughts" would you like? I'd search for your own personal ideal. As a very sexual woman, is one man enough? Are you exploring alternative lifestyles? Swinging? Polyamorous? Sounds like it, Otherwise your goal would be a monogamous LTR with one man. Any interest in other women? You're a very attractive woman. As such, It seems it's up to you to decide what you want; experiment, explore, take charge.
Why do so many people today want to be unique and special?
Storm1752 comments on Jul 10, 2019:
Funny you should ask that. Lately it's been occuring to me every human being IS like a snowflake---identical from a distance, up close very different...what takes effort and what I've been trying to do with MYself is instead of trying to fit in, to appreciate and be PROUD of my uniqueness. Think about it: have YOU ever met two people exactly the same? Maybe you have. I doubt it, but if you have, isn't that the exception which proves the rule? Maybe that's the problem with some people: it's almost impossible to be like someone. Even TRYING is a sure setup for failure...at least that's the hypothesis I've lately been trying to prove or disprove as a premise. The theory would be, happiness is accepting yourself, embracing your differences, having the courage to bring that person into the world for all to see THAT can be very hard, but the alternative is putting up a false front, and letting other people interact and react to that fake person. So you're adjusting and fine-tuning a facade. Allowing others to interact and react to the real you, conversely, might result in REAL adjustments leading to greater growth, self-awareness, and fine-tuning the REAL you to be more effective.
What do you think are some of the root causes of apathy in our society?
Storm1752 comments on Jul 9, 2019:
Sheer laziness. There are so many interesting things and critical issues to occupy the mind, it is almost immoral not to care. Apathy causes the lazy to rationalize, for instance, not VOTING, by saying their vote doesn't matter. Bullsh*t. You're just a lazy, apathetic excuse for a human being. Apathy is a disease of the mind, possibly caused by a conviction nothing matters, we all die anyway. A true believer, whether IN god, or perhaps especially in god's non-existence, might for that reason be apatheic. At least the theist has a brighter expectation for the future. (But an Abrahamic believer still has Armaggedon to navigate...by no means a cheerful prospect!) Agnostcism is less likely to breed apathy, but may. An agnostic atheist might be more prone to it than an agnostic deist, for example, but the shadow of a doubt may spark some interest in the world around them!

Storm1752 comments on Jul 9, 2019:
I just say, 'sure,' or, 'right.' I admit I avoid saying, 'amen,' the same way I avoid saying, 'god d*mn it,' or 'jesus christ!,' or, 'thank god!' and lot of other common phrases, to the point I've almost excised it all from my vocabulary. It's amazing how many of them there are! Regardless of it's root meaning (so be it), I consider it a religious word and shun it.

Peterson thinks we got our ethics from our Judeo-Christian heritage.
Storm1752 comments on Jul 9, 2019:
I think where we get our ethics from is irrelevant. Christianity was an accident of history...well, a deliberate accident. If it never happened, which would have been much more likely, Judaism would probably have either remained an obscure religion, or died out altogether. Who knows? That the Flavian emperors grafted a combo of one or more Jewish sects (Essenes, Nazarenes, both, others?) and mystery religions into this weird new monster was, well, something you just can't make up (haha...get it?). Anyway, the point is, we would have gotten our ethics from SOMEWHERE. Maybe better ethics. What, we have the greatest ethics ever? Has anybody watched the news lately? And BEFORE Christianity, or elsewhere, they don't have ethics? You think Islam has great ethics? Sounds like this guy is banking on the famous American ignorance of cultures, religions, societies, ETHICS, other than their own. I personally am a fan of Confucius; not a 'follower,' by any means, but HE had ethics!
I'm anxious.
Storm1752 comments on Jul 8, 2019:
It can be boiled down to this: the richer people get, the more they want to keep what is theirs. They become prone to an ideology which casts poor people as parasites. They become vested in keeping the system "as is," since their wealth depends on it. A revolution of ANY kind is the last thing they want! They embrace religious groups which flatter their wealth, tell them it means god is rewarding them for their intelligence, hard work, perserverence, and goodness. This is human nature. When in doubt, human beings ask first, what is best for them as individuals. As they get wealthier, ideologies change to fit their changed circumstances. So don't blame these people for their beliefs and attitudes. It takes very special people to go against their own self-interests, AS THEY PERCIEVE THEM. Rightly or wrongly, they are simply taking the path of least resistance, doing what comes naturally. In my opinion, agnosticism changes the game. But they better get there (and keep it to themselves) BEFORE they get rich. Afterwards it's often too late.
