Is Sport a Religion? | Psychology Today Australia
Storm1752 comments on Jul 7, 2019:
I'm a sports fan. When I lived in one place which had a tv I watched NFL football all the way through the Super Bowl. Lots of fun. The next year no tv, so I didn't watch, but followed it online, watched some online sports shows. Still fun. Could care less about individual athletes, just enjoyed the chess match. It's like a serialized movie or tv show. Nothing like a religion. See no similarity whatsoever. Silly comparison.

I fervently wish I hadn't been brought up in a devout (or any kind of) Catholic household. I wonder what it would've been like to have a brain unencumbered by all that clutter. As it is, I constantly watch Hitchens. Carrier, and other scholars to de-program myself and free my mind. I come here as often as possible, in part, for exactly the same reason. I don't need to be convinced of what is now to me obvious; it's just the conditioning is so ingrained into my subconscious (maybe even my unconscious) I'm sure it will take years to root it out. If it's even possible. People brought up in non-religious environments have no idea how lucky they have it!

If you get bored with THAT, you could take a vacation to earth or some other god-forsaken planet to see how damn lucky you have it, OR to supercharge your gratitude even more you could even go to hell on a day pass. If that didn't do the trick, you could complain directly to Jesus; HE'D think of something.

I happen to think you're nice-looking, your body type is a non-issue, I was being nice and polite, and you disappeared. But the way you tell it, men are the ones letting YOU down. It's not just you, women routinely seem to think it's okay to blow a guy off, but if a guy blows THEM off, they're insensitive brutes. Maybe that's harsh...sorry, but I have been misused by women far more than the other way around. Don't get me wrong, I've had great relationships with great women too, so I'm not singing the blues here, but c'mon! Dating sites are usually cruel places. I've never thought of this as a "dating site;" I just enjoy talking to women about all kinds of things, to get their perspective, etc., and if anything ever came of it, great, if not, okay too. But AS a dating "forum " this is by far the best I've ever come across, because you're guaranteed you're talking to a "like-minded person," and it's more than about jobs, station in life, money, the right resume, etc. Anyway, good luck finding your guy.

Since I don't believe IN anything in the first place, no, but I have an open mind. Psychic ability isn't "supernatural," neither is reincarnation, potentially. It depends on the SOURCE of some of these things. Are radio or TV waves spernatural? No. Solar flares? Eclipses? Asteroids? Northern Lights? Crop Circles? At one time sll these phenomena were considered of divine and/or demonic origin. Just about anything we don't understand we attribute to some extraordinary power. These "supernatural" events are prone to hucksterism, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. Doesn't mean they DO, either.

Storm1752 comments on Jul 1, 2019:
No I can't because it's not true. Your misconception comes from the fact Evangelicals (and Catholics and Christians in general) VOTE! For the first time ever, in the U.S., people with no religious affiliation outnumber both Evangelicals and Catholics. But spurred on by religio-cultural issues, ESPECIALLY abortion, devout, fundamentalist Christians VOTE in droves, while the non-religious sit on their hands. So the religious are massively over-represented on all levels of government, DOMINATE it in fact. Meanwhile the non-religious are invisible, have no direct impact on public policy, and must be held to account for the many crimes committed in their name, because of their indolence, indifference, and sheer abrogation of their civic duty. It's a disgrace. But it's not like they actually care. The lazy liberal left are gadually snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, as the religious will use their creeping tenacles to eventually destroy democracy altogether and impose their worldview by force. One example is net neutrality, another is AM talk radio. All media outlets will eventually be co-opted by the right-wing fanatics and the left will be pushed into an underground dungeon. The internet is all but lost. All because liberals refuse to VOTE.

Storm1752 comments on Jun 30, 2019:
The whole point is NOT to pooh-pooh the entire question by stating the obvious: a perfect world is probably not possible! This is theoretical! The QUESTION is twofold: 1) would political, economic, and social harmony on the MACRO level affect you, your friends and family, by making you happier? Better people? 2) would it matter? As an agnostic? OR as an atheist, would it improve your outlook as to, for instance, the perfectability of mankind? And would THAT matter, since life itself is meaningless anyway?

This is my way of thumbing my nose to all those who protest ill treatment, but do the same thing to others when the moment of truth arises. On the OTHER hand, I've been a hypocrite too. It's just when it occurs to me and I have a choice, I'll sometimes do the opposite of what my "human nature" tells me to do. Within reason. My hat's off to others to do that without recourse to god, just to tell others what they think of them. I don't think I should get a shout-out for being weird.

I think it is the FEAR of hell (terrible experiences we don't think we'll survive) we should watch out for. Once the worse thing we can imagine actually happens (short of death or something truly horrific) we usually say to ourselves, "Oh, this really sucks," and we regroup, devise a plan, and move on. That's happened to me often. It sucked. I moved on. As a stoic might say, realizing human resiliency is almost limitless, we lose our fear. Maybe that's one take: don't be afraid of making a bad decision...the worst case-scenario is failure, and failure is no big deal.

Storm1752 comments on Jun 23, 2019:
I came to my conclusion by simple logic. Atheists love to state the simplistic obvious, then make a totally unjustified leap to an absolutist verdict: there is no proof there is a god by any definition, therefore there is no such thing. Well there's no proof there ISN'T a god of sorts either, but I don't go around saying that means there IS one! We simply DON'T KNOW. YOU make a great point: if there is a god, it may not be a "supreme being" at all, and in any event it's highly dubious he'd ask a few chosen "holy men" to write books on the subject...why would a REAL god care?!? If it's ridiculous to think such a thing, it's also ridiculous to think the opposite: why would god not care? Why would "god" have a separate consciousness at all? Maybe god is everything and is a collective consciousness...and yes, maybe there's no such thing. I just wish we could get beyond this vacuous "debate" and figure how to live our lives as beings free to do what we will regardless.
What do you think about Deism?
Storm1752 comments on Jun 23, 2019:
Labels again. I'm an agnostic pantheistic deist. OR AM I? If a deist believes IN any kind of supreme being, that's not me. I guess I believe IN the possibility of the existence of SOME kind of "prime cause," or if you will, an as yet undefinable, unknowable Something. Do I call this Something "god?" Yes, for want of a better word. That's it. As far as I go. MAYBE it's a "being?" I can't rule it out, in the sense the Universe itself might be thought of as a being. A collective consciousness? Maybe. I just don't "get" and can't believe IN, nothing, which is the definition of atheism. After all, we're here, aren't we? Paranormal phenomenon is a real, provable thing, despite what atheists may say. Is there other intelligent life in the Universe? It makes sense to think there is. Can we PROVE it? No. Same thing with "god," as far as I'm concerned. I like tweaking atheists, yanking their chain, as it were, but other than that I could care less about it. I talk about such matters because it's entertaining, something to do, but I'm unconcerned. It is what it is. The debate continues, on and on, into infinity...

Hello beautimous ones! What makes you feel sexually confident?
Storm1752 comments on Jun 22, 2019:
Truthfully? After I abstain from sex (including masturbating) for a long time (a week or two at least), the sexual tension (among other things!) builds up, the "batteries" get recharged, and I get hornier and hornier until I can't stand it any more! The longest I've gone is a couple months. It not only makes me confident I can "perform," but also seems to get me on the right "wavelength" to project my readiness, attraction, and desire for the "object of my affection." Without that, nothing happsns!
Alcoholics Anonymous... Is a religious cult?
Storm1752 comments on Jun 22, 2019:
It's for the birds...they insist on doing the same exact boring ritual--sort of like mass--every single time, and it's VERY god-centered. It ALL bothers me to no end, but particularly repugnant is the "moral inventory'" where you do a lengthy autobiographical history of your drinking career, especially all the people you hurt in some way when drunk (never mind the fact you were by definition in an altered state and "not yourself."). Then you're supposed to go to all these people and "make amends;" in other words say you're sorry and make it up to them in whatever way comes to mind, I guess. i never did it. It goes back to the idea drunks are moral basket cases, when the truth is it has nothing to do with "right" and "wrong." That last part is slightly debatable, I guess, but it's stll of highly questionable utility, and very intrusive. I hated it. It does no good unless YOU have had enough. At that point you quit for good. It's a cult, but not a successful one. They tell you to "keep coming back," that it "works if you work it " but people predictably backslide and fall off the wagon, sober up and straighten back out, constantly. Just as they would without AA. The god stuff is totally irrelevant.

Unlikely, but hey, who knows? 4) really, actually, be a pedophile. Unlikely, but not impossible. They DO exist outside the priesthood. What would these strange people DO for a living? Like John Gacy, maybe they moonlight as clowns. Or widget-makers. Man, does it MATTER?

Just spiders and heights? What about poisonous snakes? Lions, tigers and bears?!? Alligators? Gila monsters? Poison Ivy? I can thinks of DOZENS of things! My (worthless) advice though: go the extra mile and be a full-blown agnostic! It won't TOTALLY take care of the fear of death--you'll still have that queasy, nagging uncertainty--but at least you won't KNOW you'll go 'poof!' someday, when you least expect it...there you are walking down the street and a meteorite hits you in the head! Gone! Hey, it happens. Like me, you'll wonder about it a lot...and just about everything else. A lot. I kind of envy atheist their absolute conviction. It must be nice to KNOW there's no afterlife (no 'god' required, so atheism is about more than 'god.' It's about not having fun.) Agnostic uncertainty IS unsettling. Seems kinda wimpy, actually. But it makes sense, damn it all to...the moon! It's easier, too. Saying, "I don't know" makes life more peaceful. Invites a discussion during which you can say you don't know as often as you like! Becomes a habit. Soon, when your girlfriend asks you which restaurant you want to go to...you won't know! TV program? No idea! And so on. Sure, she'll think you've lost it. You of course won't know. Anyway, I guess being an Agnostic Atheist would cover it, but unfortunately the two words contradict each other. Totally incompatible (I hope no agnostic atheists are reading this). See, I just watch superhero movies to satiate the "god gene" some people insist we have. As for 'god?' Don't worry about it! (Doesn't sound like you do. I don't.) Science will figure it out someday. I really believe that. Maybe. In the meantime, revel in the knowledge that of all the (unfortunately) billions of people on this planet, only the insane are not, down deep inside, agnostic. Yes, you too.I think.

Not quite the same thing. Unicorns are horses with a horn. Magical. Don't exist on this planet. Fact. Might have in distant past in one form or another. God can be envisioned as anything you want. No "facts" available.

I'm agnostic. Wherever I am and whoever I'm talking to at the time, I often temporarily adjust my language to "blend in," because I don't take anything that seriously, believe IN nothing, and learn a lot more that way. So I'll never come out except depending on my company at the time I might intimate I'm agnostic. In those cases they usually are too. Or atheist.
Should we all become teetotalers because there are alcoholics?
Storm1752 comments on Jun 18, 2019:
Personally, I DO think alcohol should be banned permanently. Also cigarettes. Both are EXTREMELY bad for you. Today, we have the potential to design drugs which perfectly mimic the alcoholic "buzz" without the disadvantages of hangovers, drunk driving, the violence, horrible health consequences, etc. AND, like other designer drugs, the "buzz" could be devised to last a certain period of time like, say, the length of the party attended, or up until bedtime. If we put all the money spent on cleaning up the mess alcohol causes, and put it into creating such a wonderful substance, we would save in the long run countless billions, even trillions, of dollars. Similarly, we could invent a "religion pill" to emulate all the "warm fuzzies" religion provides the religion addict. For those of us NOT so addicted. I suggest a Manhattan Project to devise a religion without the toxic side effects: 1) proveable, at least circumstantially, 2) replaces all extant religions, 3) no holy books, dogmas, liturgies, rituals, etc., with lone exception of the Golden Rule. (In fact let's make that the name of this new religion.) 4) no churches or other 'worship centers.' 5) Please add own features. Of course, this is impossible. But making the new drug universally available (let's call it the Golden Rule pill) we can stealthily replace all religions THAT way. To address your actual point, I think it depends on the religion. Abrahamic religions are hopeless. Inherently toxic. Lots of religions to choose from, though! As an agnostic "deist," I can freely move from one "religion" to another effortlessly. Right now I'm favoring Gaia, that is, Mother Nature, with a smattering of Confuscianism, maybe some Buddhist reincarnational flavoring, along with...aliens, crop circles, lots of other stuff. I make a stew frequently...frozen vegetables and whatever else is handy. Because I always add different things, it always tastes different. "Religion" is that way for me. Depends on what I'm reading/doing/feeling at the moment.
God and I reached an understanding.

Okaaaaayyy....so you think the candle flame going out really meant something? Or was it just a symbolic thing? A sign from the lesbian goddess on high? Or had you made the point with your daughter and that was enough for all of you? Lots of mixed metaphors and such. Not making fun. Was it a 'real' thing, or a coincidence which solidified a deeper substance?
How and when did you lose your religion?
Storm1752 comments on Jun 17, 2019:
It was lost at around 16. But the FINAL finishing end to end all ends with end-of-the-road finality was: Jesus didn't exist! At all. No such dude. Not even as a humble carpenter who went beserk. The final swing of the hammer? No Nazareth! Not a little tiny, eensy-weenzy hamlet, not even a single house! It was a graveyard, "for Christ's sa...." Oh, sorry. So not only was there no Jesus, there was no Nazareth! That realization just really pissed me off!
Does anyone else think the depth and breadth of discourse about religious detriment on this site has...
Storm1752 comments on Jun 17, 2019:
Most already know religion is a detriment because they've experienced it for themselves. It's used by the rich and powerful as a lever of control. It permeates every facet of our lives and there is no escaping it. We can understand it, however, if we "take it to the next level "and ask ourselves: "What would our lives look like if it didn't exist," and "How can we free ourselves enough for it to make a practical difference in how not only live, but how we THINK?" Instead of endlessly reacting to the bad things we see around us, we should ask, "What are the alternatives," and, "How can we build on the good things secularism has brought into the world," and "How can we not only minimize the damage done by outmoded beliefs---used by the rich to dominate politics by making it the exclusive domain of the religious---but also maximize the positive things such as science, public education, and environmentalism?" How the reactionaries say humans, for instance, are 'divine' rather than a species of ape, thus making abortion not only MURDER, BUT DEI-CIDE. Superficial, the way we approach problems as an ideological football, a "good versus evil" struggle, especially by the conservative right, rather than a class struggle of "rich versus poor." Superficially reducing political philosophy, we're called "socialist" and "communist," and defensively shrink from these attacks, BUT our increasing numbers should embolden us to take the fight directly to the forces of ignorance and supersition at their source. Money and Greed, Power and Control. What all this means to me is, it is counterproductive to be constantly repeating the same diagnoses, and citing yet more examples of their pernicious influence. BETTER to discuss ways to dissolve concentrated wealth (more voting machines, easier access, for example) and eventually eliminate their destructive influence. Religion is both the problem, and the sledgehammer smashing our resistance. Superficial whining doesn't help.

I certainly don't mind conversing, debating, arguing, reasoning with, and in general interfacing with wrong-minded people. They're entitled to their opinions. And if for some reason enough have been successfully brainwashed into a given fallacious way of thinking, and vote, then in a democracy wrong-minded policy prescriptions become law. The problems occur when the democracy itself is undermined. Then little or nothing can be done about reversing these laws when they are proved injurious, and resultant downward spirals can thus become fatal.

The global capitalists are busy building luxury underground villages, self-sustaining and sealed off from the societies from which they'll be secluding themselves. They are not stupid. They are consuming governments and societies to finance their survivals while the environment, economy, social systems, cultures, the whole of civilization, collapses. Rather than throw off religion, they use it to manipulate the general populace into cooperating in their own demise. IS the preceding a deliberate conspiracy, as implied, or is it developing that way in the course of events? Name me one obscenely wealthy person who does NOT have such a Plan B. You cannot, because you can name very few who DO. But is there any doubt in your mind most if not all of them HAVE punched their ticket? Why would they tell you?

A hypothetical moral dilemma: Dan melody are dating, Dan ask Melody" are you on birth control?
Storm1752 comments on Jun 14, 2019:
Yes, of course. Why hide it? Seems ludicrous anyway because it'd obviously come up in the course of things. If Melody didn't like it and wanted a virile man with whom to have children, she could leave. And Melody should have told Dan she wasn't using contraceptives. She's the bigger a-hole, if you're keeping score. Dan already told her he didn't want to get married and have kids. So the question is contrived, designed to construct an unlikely and ridiculous senario, so then could be asked an equally contrived, nonsensical question.
Another good idea.
Storm1752 comments on Jun 14, 2019:
Wow. Sounds like something as wildly unrealistic as something "Jesus" would've said, like there would come a day we'd do greater things than he (like walk on water, raise the dead, etc.). EVERY time? Hey, it's a nice sentiment! Like living every day like.it.was.your.last. It DOES make the legitimate point (which I think WAS the point) a man should not take for granted the woman in his life and continually remind himself how lucky he is to have her. If he does that, the quantity and quality of his kisses should improve markedly.
Though Atheism is not a religion, which one of them are more generous? :)
Storm1752 comments on Jun 14, 2019:
Please excuse, but I feel ZERO need, desire, compulsion, etc., to compare agnosticism to ANY belief system, be it atheism, religion, philosophy, ideology, political affiliation, etc, as if it matters what these closed-minded "true believers" think. I don't agree with any of their whole-cloth panaceas. Similarly, I feel no inclimation to 1) give to the poor, 2) pick up litter, 3) be a "nice" person, 4) save the planet, 5) espouse an opinion or point of view, 6) do anything st all, To prove anything to anybody. I may or may not do any of these things or other things because I feel like it, independent of any particular reason. I find it extremely irritating when anyone gives even the HINT of the impression I think what we do or don't do is tied to god or man, and doesn't come solely from our individually-mandated motivations. I DO WHAT I DO BECAUSE: 1) I feel like it, 2) I don't want to go to jail or incur someone else's wrath/revenge impulse, 3) it feels good, 4) I derive some personal, tangible benefit, 5) I make a mistake, 6) just because. I could think of others but that's basically it. Whether or not there's an afterlife, we have THIS life free and clear. If we want to do "bad" things, we can. Many people do. If they get away with it and it doesn't bother them to ruin someone else's life, for example, hey, go for it, Not my deal but whatever turns your crank. (Just don't come crying to me when your luck runs out.). Anyway, the thing is, I accept with anger the world as it is. The only person I answer to is myself. When I occasionally think about it, 99.9999...% of the people in the world don't even know I exist, even those surrounding me. They are self-contained organisms concerned first and foremost with their own lives, not mine. I'm on my own, for the most part, and regardless of whatever support system I've managed to create for myself, it's mostly an illusion. The ONLY thing I truly have, is myself. Friendships, lovers, acquaintances, come and go. I remain. So I don't CARE what others think. I have enough trouble keeping MYSELF happy.

Only you know for sure. Everybody has biases about lots of things. If I was born into that culture at that time, I'd probably/almost certainly be exactly like everybody around me. We are creatures of our social/cultural/economic milieus. Just as fact. So Gish was or was not a racist? Probably. So what? What matters is how things are today, and in the Deep South outside college towns things haven't changed much. But overall society has changed a LOT since Birth of a Nation days. I personally think it should be REQUIRED for the "races" to interbreed (Details sketchy). But I think a lot of things should be legal or illegal depending on how I feel at the moment.
