@FrostyJim I'm kidding! You make good points; if you dwell only on the bad things, it can look terribly bleak. I find when things are for me personally, I tend to see the bad side to everything, so-so and i see the good and bad, and when things are going exceptionally well, I see the positive things more. Things are going well for me, so I'm seeing good things. I'm not saying the same holds true for you. But objectovely, it IS true there are as many good things happening as bad. It seems it's a tossup which way the scales will tip in the end. I certainly don't know the answer, and I dare say neither do you. Looking at the big picture: does it really matter? Our lives are short then we're gone. Unless you think reincarnation is a possibility, that's it! Why not let others worry about all the sham, drudgery, broken dreams, hatred, greed, etc., surrounding us. Live YOUR life as if everything's great. Block out all the noise. And if you can do something worthwhile along the way, great.

@silverotter11 True. The real central issue of the day is voting rights. A "democracy," which we supposedly are, SHOULD be based on universal suffrage--there should be polling stations in every neighborhood, or at least easily accessible! Better yet, people should be able to vote online...why not? Every other transaction is accomplished that way. Well, we both know why not. It would drastically transform society. Power would shift to the people, ALL the people, and away from those now suppressing the vote. We also know precisely who those people are. It's a basic constitutional issue, and should be treated as such.

@EdwinMcCravy I'm saying MAYBE we'll have a better idea of the nature of things later. As for now, we all have mental images of what those words MEAN. It's a faulty, bogus meaning, but it's there. Lots of atheists like to laugh at images pink polka-dotted dragons, but your mind instantly conjures up an image of it, even though it doesn't exist. But that image has no MEANING. A word like 'Yahweh' though, does have a meaning attached. It's a false meaning, but it's there, and I think it should be acknowledged. It's a curse created by our upbringing, education, conditioning, training, whatever you want to call it. It has to be faced and resisted every day.

Storm1752 replies on May 25, 2019:
No, you're wrong: I KNOW FOR A FACT you don't have a dragon in your garage. But you don't KNOW god--by some definition anyway--doesn't exist. This is the kind of inductive reasoning, using false equivalency, people employ all the time to build premises.designed to bolster preconceptions, upon which they "prove"...nothing. I'm not an atheist, because I don't believe IN anything, including the nonexistence of god. You insist on using loaded words like "Christian" and "dieties," so as to narrow your definition to your "straw men" and then shoot them down. But our understanding of the physical world is so limited we barely comprehend anything at all, a miniscule fraction of what's there. If there is something we could refer to as "god," we have not the slightest idea what that might be. So for you to stand there and smugly say you know for a FACT there is no such thing is laughable. There is a huge difference between agnostics and atheists. I wish you and others would get that through your heads.

I'm sorry but political viewpoints are irrelevant when talking about agnostics and atheists, in my opinion. To not believe in a 'traditional' god and in religion is an inherently game-changing perspective which renders 'traditional' political affiliations moot, null and void, being that such affiliations are BASED on acceptance of the underlying superstructure of 'good' and 'evil' upon which religions rely. Throw out the superstructure and you throw it all out, and start over. Cling to it, and you hold fast to those affiliations without the underlying premises on which they are based. For instance, abortion. Without reference to and belief in a 'soul,' a human fetus is simply a fetus, like any other, enjoying no special status or rights. Gun control: a matter of public safety, over which no god has jurisdiction. Opposition based on fear of: Tyranny: assign political decisions to a computer program, free of corruption and self-interest. Shorn of its theological trappings, politics is fundamentally LIBERAL. Conservatism is based on beliefs grounded in antiquated, obsolete, unenlightened ideas AT THEIR CORE religious.

Someone ought to make a movie about THAT! Talk about a blockbuster! And some people wonder why we talk about religion all the time...uh, hello! Because the incredible truth is so hard to believe we can scarcely wrap our minds around it. It'll take CENTURIES to deconstruct all this gobblygook and make some sense out of who we REALLY are, based on science, reason, rational thought, and facts--if we ever do. You know, the question is often asked, 'if you could go back in time and be able to talk to any person or group of people, who would he or she or they, be?' Hands down for me would be those people who birthed the Christian religion--wrote or chose the books, printed and distributed them, put the whole edifice in place. I know it took years over generations, but there must have been a room somewhere (maybe it was Titus or his father's crew) where they were sitting around trying to figure out what to do about the Jews, and a light went on in someone's head, and amidst the drunken laughter about creating a new, custom-made messiah, real excitement grew, and the realization dawned--we could actually DO this! I'd like to talk to THEM!

You're welcome. For me it has evolved from a curiousity, to a habit, and now into a noble quest! To find the elusively GREAT porn, which strikes you in just the right way and causes you to go all weak and helpless in the face of its TRUTH! When thus stricken, I say to myself, "Yes, that's it, that's what I've been searching for!" The fact it happens so rarely only drives me onward to find it again! What is this myserious ingredient? Because people are so different, the ingredient shape-shifts, scatching the particular itch true, probably, of only that individual person. But what is the common denominator? Cutting through the pretense and inhibitions like a knife through butter, breaking down the barriers like a battering ram through paper mache...most porn TRIES to do this, but only the very best is convincing and rings true.

Storm1752 replies on Apr 12, 2019:
@Quarm I'm saying the exact opposite: If we decided to put someone to death, we'd have to know for sure the intracacies of the case. Were there good reasons why the crime was committed? Was there an underlying mental illness? Perhaps it was done in the blind rage of temporary passion? Did the perp's upbringing come into plsy? OR was it done with premeditated calculation, the criminal knowing it's wrongfulness and doing it anyway, purely for self-serving purposes without regard for the rights of others? Did this wrongdoer see himself (or herself) as more important than everybody else, and thus free to do, well, anything, whatever the consequences for those of less importance? All kinds of considerations are to be studied. So to just to put someone to death quickly, to disguise the immorality of putting someone to death at all, defeats the purpose: to do justice. Of course, if the consensus is, it is inherently immoral, then it shouldn't be done at all. Your sarcasm is unbecoming.

It seems we'll just have to agree to respectfully disagree. I truly don't see we have anything else to add to what we've already said. I didn't soften my views much, at least I don't see it. I guess you were trying to "soften" my views, but I don't think my "views" are that hard, fast, inflexible, or doctrinaire to begin with. I think the facts are quite clear on this particular issue, and I'll just go by that. Why you can feel the way you do given those facts truly mystifies me. But we live in a free country and you are certainly entitled to your own opinion. For that matter you're entitled to your own take on those facts. In fact, you're even entitled to your own facts! Is this a great country or what? No matter. Neither one of us are in a position to influence public policy, except through the vote. (It's a shame voting wasn't mandatory and much easier for the disadvantaged to do; if it was, public policy would be much different. But that's a whole other discussion.) So we'll just yammer away. I just hope, and I do with confidence, us agnostics and atheists (you ARE one or the other or both, right?) will always have the right to think and talk and live the way we wish, without interference. Indeed, it looks like godlessness is getting the upper hand in the civilized world, which is all but inevitable unless the powers-that-be get spooked and put the hammer down. And that COULD happen, unless people wake up to that very real threat.. In the meantime, I'll just do what I do and go about my business. Have a nice day. Have a nice LIFE!
