I belong to a Freethought Toastmasters Club, and our founding member has often explained the definitions of Atheism And Agnosticism. Theism means having a belief. Gnosticism means having knowledge. The A- means "a lack of". So, in my eye EVERYONE is Agnostic, because NOBODY KNOWS anything FOR ...

I do. I was writing you something so amazing, cogent, and dead-on fantastic it took my breath away, but I somehow touched the wrong part of the screen and it went, 'Poof!' So allow me to synoposize. First, I love you. Sincerely. Without reservation. ALMOST as much as I love myself. Which is lot. Despite what others think. I could go on forever about the esteem in which I hold myself. I love you like that. This is because I'm deeply flattered. Thank you. Second, I don't talk to my family. Not because I dislike them. I don't. I wish them well. Sort of. If I DID talk to them, the subject probably wouldn't come up, because they're not religious, maybe even agnostic themselves. The only family I talk to is my 96-year-old mother, a deeply pious Catholic. I used to engage her in spirited debate but lost interest because 1) the result was predictable and boring, 2) I saw no point in upsetting her. She asked me last time we talked about something on Catholic TV about the New Atheists. She was REALLY asking me if I was one. I'm not, but close enough for me to sidestep the whole subject. Why bother? She was a good mother in her own way, no need to freak her out. The rest of them do that, blaming her for their dysfunction and unhappiness. I don't. In fact, I'm happier now than I've ever been. Hey, I'm taking down your information. I'm going to look into your group. Right now I'm tired! Been a long day. My email is michaelstortz179@gmail.com. Send me something about it, please. Let's talk. I DO agree with everything you said. If I didn't I'd say so.

There has to be a link between this whole agnostic vs atheist thing and narcissism. Storm1752 replies on Mar 25, 2019:
Are you saying I'm narcissistic? True. In my own defense I would only add, everybody is to one degree or another. I am the most important person in the world, to me. To everybody else I'm unimportant, irrelevant, not worth mentioning. Even my circumspection is calculated to draw attention to myself. If I give change to a beggar on the street, it's to make ME feel good about myself. So, yes, nailed it.

@bigpawbullets I didn't say I was creating the Bible, here. That was made up over centuries. And how could they make up the "Egyptian Captivity" out of whole cloth and not get called on it? Pretty impressive. A towering figure like Moses? Solomon? David? ANYBODY??? Nope. Just some guy in a tent. Probably high on peyote, or something. Simply awe-inspiring how they duped, and continue to dupe, millions. Absolutely, literally, unbelievable.

@Quarm, @BohoHeathen A "religion" can be defined loosely as a belief system to which one invests supreme importance. But narrowly, atheism us a quasi-religion, or an " anti-religion" with all the trappings of the real thing. Agnostics, on the other hand, SIMPLY DON'T KNOW if there's a god or gods, or what that very word might mean, except to say, "Who knows?" Each individual agnostic is rebellious against the very IDEA human beings know ANYTHING about such matters. If there is anything to comprehend, it is so far beyond what our brains can fathom, we can be said to know nothing. I am satisfied the "God" of Yahweh and Allah and the Father and all the rest are pure fiction. Do I KNOW that? I'm teetering...I'm so tempted to say, 'Yes, I'm 100% sure." In fact...damn! Yes, okay? Of THAT I'm positive! Same with most of the other theological underpinning of the whole rotten edifice. But that's it! That and other similar fables like Midas, the goose and the golden egg. I'm sure lots of other things. Like the 2nd Amendment makes sense. Not that I don't approve of gun ownership! I do! Anyway...

Within the halls of reason there is room for many schools of thought. Instead of looking for THE truth, maybe they should think a little more like agnostics and be open to the notion there IS no truth, only opinion, about most things.

But I guess the final straw was finding out THERE WAS NO NAZARETH. That is not my opinion. In 33 a.d. or whenever, "Nazareth" was a graveyard with one Adobe shack for the keeper. Imagine my shock! The rest of the dominos fell after that, one by one. It is a proven FACT he didn't exist, and if he didn't, Cristianity doesn't, except in the minds of the gullible, the charlatan, the fraud. That's FAR different than thinking there might be something to this reincarnation thing, for one. Two very different things. You're entitled to your opinion; I respectfully disagree, and I base that on MY definition of 'atheist,' which I'm quite sure you disagree with. And this goes back to the familiar debating points...I won't go there. To ME (and I'm speaking only for myself, based on actual verbiage used) an atheist is SURE many things are false he cannot prove to be false. I'm not talking about the familiar no-brainers like heaven and hell, miracles, etc., but other things they can't possibly know. I SHARE many of those OPINIONS, but not others. There's room for open-minded discussion. What REALLY bothers me is the grim, unbending certainty. It's depressing, JUST AS DEPRESSING AS RELIGION. To me that "proves" it's wrong.

So tell me, please (and TL;DR) if your undecided about the existence of gods or heaven and hell, how do you live your life? Is it in accordance with the laws of every religion, or have you made up your own religion that says "If I live a good life I go to whatever version of heaven exists"?
Storm1752 replies on Mar 25, 2019:
In my opinion there are no gods, no heaven or hell...I said that. Hell is impossible according to ANY reasonable scenario. A "God would be incapable of creating such a place. We both know this. Pesos might get punished. Murderers. Thieves. Whomever. Maybe not. No way of telling. But to sit there and say it's meaningless. It's the pits. Uou Just Can't Say That. No basis for that kind of pessimism. None. I'm just so happy with it the way it is I don't have room in my head for all that doom and gloom. I'm free. It's okay if I never reached my potential, if I made mistakes, because in the end it doesn't matter. If there's reincarnation the slate is wiped clean and you start again. If not, you're done. If it didn't, it would cease to exist, 2) You said you were "anti-Israel." Okay. That's a legitimate position. You don't have to be an Islamic terrorist to feel that way. I would have rather they were never born into existence. Would have saved the world a lot of grief. BUT THEY WERE, AND HERE THEY ARE. And, they are not going anywhere. You, I, and everybody else has to deal with that fact. And since they ARE here, I support their right to exist. Hey, all countries were formed somehow. Look back a thousand years, or two, or three, and see how different national borders were back then. National boundaries change over time. Who knows what they will look like a thousand years from now? So, in the end, does it really matter? 50 years from now we will both be dead. Will it matter to us then, this bullshit problem these bullshit religions are having with one another? I don't follow the news. This territorial and religious dispute has absolutely nothing to do with me. I have an opinion which doesn't matter even to me. So if you want me to shove it up my ass, I will do so gladly. We’ve been led to believe that men think about sex a great deal more than they actually do.
Storm1752 comments on Mar 21, 2019:
I think about finding a girlfriend, after a long hiatus, MUCH more than sex! That's just one variable, and not the main one. I KID about it, 'cause men are supposed to, but sex can be a chore if not done right. Women need to think about that. I am not atypical. At least I doubt it.
Storm1752 replies on Mar 21, 2019:
Also, most women, it seems to me, wait for the man to make the first "move." The men who approach them are usually highly-sexed, high-testosterone, "alpha male" macho ducks who probably ARE just interested in sex, or are sociopaths skilled at putting on a false front and are not bothered by rejection anyway, or genuinely charismatic guys who just naturally disarm a female. They are successful at the "hunt" so often don't bother with anything deeper. The retiring, less charismatic types whose feelings are easily hurt learn quickly to shy away. So women do not as often get to know them. This type are more interested in relationships, less interested in sex for sex's sake. A gross generalization poorly articulated, yes, but some truth there.

Storm1752 replies on Mar 21, 2019:
I'm sorry for calling your answer 'ignorant.' By doing so I was indirectly calling YOU ignorant, and no one deserves to be unduly insulted. I am just so frustrated at some people's attitudes toward Israel, which is basically, if you strip away much of the verbiage, Israel does NOT have a right to exist, that their creation in 1948 was a travesty. Well then, just say so. According to them, they should just pack up and leave. And I will agree it was unfortunate. Like many of the arbitrary borders created by the colonialist as the dismantled their empires, it caused more harm than good. The Palestinians were displaced and their neighbors refused to assimilate them, choosing instead to house them in permanent refugee camps. That also was a travesty, but perhaps an understandable one. It should be clear by now most Muslims will never accept the existence of the Jewish state. If it takes 100 years, or a thousand, they will defeat them. Hey, they still have designs on, say Spain, which was Muslim for hundreds of years. Islam NEVER accepts defeat. A conquered territory is always considered sacred ground. It's an attitude enshrined in the Koran. It's ridiculous, but all religion is ridiculous, and as we know is used by "pious" men to cause much bloodshed and grief. The Christian's destroyed the civilizations of North and South America and elsewhere. They REALLY wanted the land and its treasure, but insisted in part it was to "save" the indigenous peoples. Talk about hypocrisy! Israel, however, is different in this sense: it is not just a distinct culture, a "people," it is also a religion. Because the New Testament, probably authored by Roman's to destroy them because their instransgience to their rule, blamed them for the death of "Christ" (who never existed), after they brutally massacred many of them and dispersed them, replacing them with a Rome-friendly fiction. This has resulted in their persecution throughout the centuries in the Christian world, culminating in the Holocaust. Ironically, Hitler may have actually done them a "favor" by once and for all making it clear they'd never be accepted in "Christ-"obsessed Christendom. Should have then moved them to some unoccupied land somewhere (if such a land existed)? Well, yes, maybe, It's debatable. It would've spared the world the present conflict. But the Jews themselves wouldn't have been too happy about it! But they didn't. They shipped them back to the Middle East, and there remain, a successful, vibrant liberal democracy right dab in the middle of Allah Country! Great. Just great. Now what? THEY ain't going nowhere! But the Arabs say, oh yes they are! You can just forget the "peace process;" it's a joke and always been. An indestructible Scorpion in a glass box with an invincible Mongoose, forever ...

Their shit hole book or scrolls. The Hebrews have always been a warrior breed of people. To discuss this shit puts you in a catch 22, saying anything against the Israel state makes you antisemitic and not anything also puts you in agreement. I hate the way they have it set up.
