Henbit could probably best be described as a weed.
Surfpirate comments on Feb 23, 2020:
The difference between a plant and a weed is the same as the difference between a mushroom and a toadstool. It is purely subjective for the most part, except for the few mushrooms that are poisonous and are therefore called toadstools by some people when they are in fact just mushrooms.

The problem with Believers is that they think everything is a matter of faith, something that you either believe in or you don't. Science is not a belief system, Mathematics is not a belief system - it is evidential, it is factual, there is no belief in Science because it is either true or it is false, there is no middle ground. You just can't 20 lbs of shit into a 5 lb bag, if you try you wind up with a shitty mess. Believe it or Not!

I wish Christians would just be honest and say they have NO idea what happens when a person dies?
Surfpirate comments on Feb 13, 2020:
Isn't the whole point of religion to pretend that we know what will happen after we die and if we behave in this life then things will be better in the next life? It's a control system based on a delusion developed to address our irrational fear of death.
Religion has always been used as a tool to control the population.

Most people are like a Bull's Cock, they just go where they are shoved and it's much easier for most people to just go where they are shoved. Take away the magic man in the sky and you would be forced to deal with reality and reality can be very harsh indeed.
Why some believe in God
Surfpirate comments on Feb 13, 2020:
All religions are based upon fear and fear of death in particular. We are hardwired to survive and that is a challenge for intelligent species as it is clear that we will ultimately die, it's inescapable but we can manufacture a delusion that we will somehow carry on after our body dies. Religion is just a means of profiting from that delusion.
Being intelligent , unfortunately , does not mean a person is moral .
Surfpirate comments on Feb 13, 2020:
Psychological studies have shown that most psychopaths exhibit higher than average IQs but this does not mean that people with high IQs are necessarily psychopaths. In my personal experience I have found the connection between wealth and intelligence to be a minor one, rich people aren't necessarily smarter, often the opposite is the case. The one common denominator that I have found among rich people is the overwhelming desire to amass wealth, no matter the cost to their health, the family and their social interactions. Greed is the key to riches, often I have found that this is based on some sort of psychological trauma in the person that drives them to amass wealth at the expense of everything else in their lives.

The white card was played, granted but the real issue is that neither party has represented We the People for a long time now. Young people who would normally be expected to vote Democrat were so disgusted by the co-opting of the democratic process by the DNC that they just stayed home and that was all the difference. Miserable, bitter, old farts with religion in their hearts because they are afraid of the supposed hereafter because of the miserable, bitter lives they have lived are going to vote Trump because he appeals to their misery and bitterness, the young people are where the votes are but the DNC is either too stupid or too corrupt to realize it.

Surfpirate comments on Feb 12, 2020:
Some people get freaked out by the term 'Atheist' so you may want to say that you have given the whole god/religion thing a lot of thought over the years and it just doesn't make sense to you personally. Personally, I just tell people that I am an Atheist because I grew up and left behind imaginary friends back when I was just a teenager. I am okay with them being juvenile and needing an imaginary crutch but only so long as they don't try to make we walk around with a crutch as well.

The difference is that there are a lot of people walking around that have not managed to outgrow the angry, old man in the sky belief. I'm in Canada so we tend to look at people who take that religion stuff too serious as somewhat demented, delusional or psychotic.

It would depend upon the available options but I tend to vote for the candidate that best represents my desire to build a better society for all citizens, Obviously a person with delusional beliefs and an overwhelming faith in any of the various death cults would be low on my list of choices. It is helpful that most of the candidates that have an open religious agenda are also hateful individuals that want to vilify the poor, the aged and the vulnerable in society, it definitely makes my choice easier at election time.

Surfpirate comments on Feb 6, 2020:
Are religions are essentially death cults, the fear of death is the premise for their existence and the underlying power of all religions. It stands to reason that atheists would be less fearful of death than those who are members of a death cult and all the dread that goes with it. If you have sinned you are going to eternal damnation and they all know that they have done their fair share of sinning, hence the anxiety. :)
Curse of the Hope Diamond is a legacy of the Supernatural that I have long heard of.
Surfpirate comments on Feb 6, 2020:
People who amass a great deal of wealth are obsessive people who are driven to do whatever is necessary to get that wealth, not well off or comfortable but rich enough that they would be able to buy something like that diamond as a symbol of their wealth and prestige. You make a lot of enemies when you are that sort of person and eventually your luck runs out. Giant diamonds and giant fortunes go hand in hand, misfortune is the inevitable result of the behavior necessary to amass giant fortunes.

It was in the basement of a local church which was a bit irksome but I went anyway, only to find out that it was a session for 'Promise Keepers' so I had been sandbagged. I stuck it out through the greasy breakfast, the even greasier speaker and the misogynistic blather that followed. I did some more research into my new realtor after that deception and found out that he had been keeping a mistress as his personal assistant for several years, beat his wife when she complained and was completely unscrupulous in his business dealings. Not everyone understands the importance of archeology. :)
Surfpirate comments on Jan 9, 2020:
Gosh, where is the tongue in cheek emoji when you need it? There is definitely a segment of the population that doesn't appreciate what can be learned from archeology but there is also a fair bit of jiggery pokery that goes on with most digs as well. I had a girlfriend who studied archeology and there was a lot of jiggery pokery going on in the showers and tents for some of these isolated digs. Then there was the skull my excavator operator pulled up in the bucket as we dug a foundation for a seaside mansion, the hew and cry was horrific, the Royal Archeology Society was called in all work was halted, the neighbours where about to lose their ocean view did everything possible to shut down the construction project and the local native band held a news conference decrying the desecration of their band's graveyard. After almost a year of jiggery pokery, the project went ahead, the graves turned out to be the remains of slaves that had been dumped in the native garbage dump, the neighbours who never paid for the free view, lost it and the mansion was completed in good time except for the delay of the dig. The owner who was a QC, successfully sued the Archeology Society for unnecessary disruptions and delays, the police were called in several times on nuisance complaints, nothing of any consequence was learned, except that the lovely young archeologist got knocked up by the head of the dig, her husband divorced her and the head of the dig denied all knowledge.

Should creationism be taught in schools?
Surfpirate comments on Jan 8, 2020:
I remember learning in the first lessons of Microbiology 101 that scientists used to believe in something called Spontaneous Generation and this theory was overturned when science came to understand the existence of microorganisms. Creationism is just a theory that was put forth by bronze age men to try and make sense of their reality. Holding Creationism up to inspection is a good idea but only if the science professor moves on and explains the modern theory of Darwinism.

Religious types have to content themselves with shunning people who do not believe in their imaginary friend, now that torturing atheists and then burning them has gone out of fashion. I don't see why atheists need to be polite to these hateful crazies, that said I try not to go too far out of my way to poke the crazies with a stick either; its boring and serves no purpose.

Gave the bait a brief sniff, found it off putting and so I opted not to bite. Offend, be offended or neither, your business and not mine.

I've found that most people who believe in an imaginary friend will just assume that you do too. The only time it comes up is when they say something religious based that is so hypocritical, ignorant and mind numbingly stupid that I feel the urge to comment, I try to bite my tongue for the most part because its just never worth it. Those times that I do say something serves to get the word out there to others that I am not 'one of god's children' and it keeps them away for the most part - I don't enjoy their company so it works for me. Being alone is much better than being surrounded by a bunch of ignorant hypocrites that make a person feel very lonely but not alone.
A close friend of mine goes back and forth between extreme antithiesm and Pascal's Wager.
