Never had that much room. Keep us posted. I do wonder where the plants will get their nutrients.
Surfpirate replies on Mar 28, 2020:
The potatoes will root into the soil of the trough I dug and laid them in before covering them with the hay. I think the hay is supposed to act like extra insulation against the cold, although when I lived in Ecuador I would see the Inca women planting potatoes on the slope of the mountain valley at 8'000 ft ASL, so potatoes do like the cold, just not freezing.

Surfpirate comments on Mar 28, 2020:
This is the other reason I put down the 6x6 GWG wire sheets on top of the hay and seed potatoes. The deer were on it already and I only planted the potatoes a few hours ago. That heavy wire is a real deterrent otherwise I would find most of the hay and all of the potatoes gone come the morning.
Surfpirate replies on Mar 28, 2020:
@MissKathleen Island deer are fierce and have no fear, the one in the foreground of the pic is right beside the potato bed. I can run out and try and scare them but that one in particular will let me get within 20 feet before she will start to edge away. The landscaping supply company in town told me that they had deer resistant plants until I told them I lived on the island and then they just laughed and said nothing is resistant to island deer. :D

Interesting. I never considered hay. I just planted my first potatoes ever about a month ago. My soil is way too sense, so mine are in pots. Started low in the pots and am gradually adding compost as the stalks grow. But you have me considering hay now. Maybe next year.
Surfpirate replies on Mar 28, 2020:
I was thinking I should get straw so I didn't get a bunch of hay growing up in the garden but I planted this along the edge of the main garden and I get plenty of hay, grass and weeds in that area normally. I figured it couldn't hurt and I had read online that the hay stays in place better than the straw. Time will tell.

The last time we were there we went to a great bistro and had steak tartare for dinner, it was spectacular. I make steak tartare at home but it is never as good as the fare in Montreal.

I had read similar info, that those patients who have a serious case that requires hospitalization and recover will sustain at least temporary lung damage, some it is expected will be permanent lung damage. What you don't hear much info on is the actual gruesome effect this virus has on the lungs as it breaks down the cellular wall in the lung and causes the victim to slowly strangle on a pink foam mixture of blood and mucous in the lungs. This is a slow and painful way to die and thankfully the patients are often delirious and because they are quarantined so they die alone, except for the attending health workers. A big chunk of the 20% who do show symptoms will be dead or very ill for a considerable time, the economy will be in the shit and the ensuing turmoil will claim many more by attrition. Surfpirate replies on Mar 17, 2020:
@Flowerwall the first cases are in China back in November of 2019, which is why the virus has -19 after the name. This particular virus has a long gestation period of several weeks during which time the infected person can be highly contagious but still show few or no symptoms, this allows the virus to spread rapidly and explains why it has gone from few known cases to quite a lot and doubling every 4 days. Hang onto your hat as this is just getting started and if proper containment procedures aren't implemented then it is expected that the health care system will be quickly overwhelmed and people who get sick and might have survived will likely not make it.

Canada is certainly more concerned about the haphazard approach taken by the US, we moved to control contagion back in February and have several quarantine centers already up and running and a system in place to pay people to stay home from work to limit the spread of the disease. Personally, I think that Canada should have put our border with the US on lockdown a few weeks ago when it was obvious that Trump and Pence would make a complete cock up of the epidemic and that the pathetic US healthcare system will leave millions without treatment.

Surfpirate replies on Mar 12, 2020:
@DenoPenno - Hydrogen Peroxide is an effective disinfectant but must be used at higher concentrations than the 3% over the counter variety that is readily available. I use a 15% solution and microdose between shocks and I periodically use a chlorine shock because it lingers longer than the hydrogen peroxide oxidizer. The use of chlorine is largely an economic decision as it lasts longer and costs less, readily available at the corner grocery store it can cause problems when people are too enthusiastic with the concentrations used. I ran into this with a germaphobe boy scout leader who made his troop sick by using too much bleach on a back country scout camp. Chlorine and Hydrogen Peroxide used in sequence is actually better than either sanitizer used alone.
